1 POST SPECIFICATION POST: LOCATION: REPORTING TO: RESPONSIBLE FOR: Head of Department (Curriculum) tbc Head of School Curriculum Managers, Lecturers, and Support Staff within the prescribed Department KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. To lead, manage and develop the curriculum provision within the Department in line with the College s strategic direction, and to ensure that the quality of the delivery is of the highest standard. 2. To directly line manage curriculum managers and support staff within prescribed department, and be responsible for all staff within prescribed department 3. To manage quality assurance and improvement within the Department including any lesson and tutorial observations, self assessment reports and quality improvement plans 4. To encourage staff to be innovative in all aspects of teaching and learning and to embed the use of e-learning across the Department 5. To manage the achievement of all Performance Targets (e.g. recruitment, retention and achievement targets for learners). 6. To manage the overall learner experience ensuring the highest levels of satisfaction for all learners 7. To oversee the management of resources (staffing and non staffing) in the Department. 8. To manage the planning and delivery of the Department s activities. 9. To undertake teaching and learning activities. (The amount of teaching required will vary according to the size of the area and the needs of the post) Page 1 of 5
2 KEY ROLES 1. To ensure that the delivery of teaching and learning is of the highest standard and responsive to the needs of the learners, including, in particular: Establishing and maintaining high levels of professional conduct in the area of responsibility. Managing and being accountable for, improvements in the quality of teaching and learning delivered by the Department Ensuring that the targets for the improvement in quality of teaching, learning and attainment for the Department are achieved Managing and being accountable for sustained improvements in learners achievements within the Department Ensuring that the targets for learners recruitment, retention and achievement are achieved. Managing the learner disciplinary process and conduct within the Department. 2. To lead the management and development of the Department s curriculum offer 3. To manage the effective delivery of a tutorial/support system that is relevant to the needs of learners 4. To manage the effective induction of learners onto their course including access to appropriate Initial Diagnostic Assessments 5. To manage the regular review of learner progress including the review of Individual Learning Plans for all learners. 6. To monitor and review Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans for all courses 7. To contribute to the development of relevant employer responsive programmes for the area and carry out relevant employer engagement activities, including liaison with key employers and stakeholders. 8. To help to capitalise on links with employers and engage their expertise in developing the college vocational curriculum as a core part of the Department s activities. 9. To ensure that information relevant to the work of the Department is collected and collated and to provide statistical data as required. To ensure that relevant data and information is disseminated to staff in the Department. 10 To undertake those aspects of the College s quality and self-evaluation Page 2 of 5
3 processes that are the responsibility of the role including, in particular, Self Evaluation Reports and course reviews. 11 To contribute to those aspects of the College strategic and annual business planning and budgeting processes that are the responsibility of the role 12. To represent the College with external agencies as required in the performance of duties 13. To achieve agreed targets and performance indicators across all areas of responsibility 14 To assist with planning and management, ensuring the effective deployment of the resource requirements for the services that are the responsibility of the role including financial, human, and physical resources. General 15 To implement College policies, particularly those relating to equality and diversity. 16 To implement Health and Safety and security measures in accordance with statutory and College requirements. 17 To actively develop yourself and your staff through staff development and training activities, and to review own performance and the performance of the staff in the Department. 18 To develop effective working relationships internally and with external partners. 19 To operate at all times in line with the College s values and behaviours 20 To undertake any other duties consistent with the key responsibilities and/or duties of the post. Qualifications 1.1 A relevant degree and/or an appropriate professional qualification. 1.2 A full teaching qualification. 1.3 Evidence of continuous professional development. 2. Previous Experience and Job Knowledge 2.1 An understanding of the co-ordination or management of curriculum delivery, including the effective development, deployment and leadership of staff. 2.2 Experience of leading teams and/or managing staff 2.3 An understanding of curriculum development and planning processes particularly in relation to the areas covered by the post. 3. Skills (Competencies and Aptitudes) 3.1 An ability to develop positive working relationships with individuals at all levels. 3.2 Well developed communication and presentation skills. 3.3 The ability to work flexibly and effectively through teams. 3.4 The ability to motivate, encourage and manage the performance of others. 3.5 The ability to analyse and solve problems. 3.6 The ability to deal with difficult issues in a sensitive and confident way. 3.7 The ability to organise workload in a methodical way. 3.8 Excellent written and oral skills. 3.9 The ability to respond creatively to the specific needs of a diverse community. 4. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Knowledge of the Further Education sector, in particular policy developments and funding arrangements in relation to issues which will impact upon personnel in the Scottish FE environment.
