Edmonton Catholic Schools requires a Bridging Futures to provide assistance to First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FMNI) high school students in the development of a career plan, building career related skills and providing the opportunity to explore a variety of industries enabling students to become familiar with the world of work. The work also focuses on preparation for students to make the transition from school to higher education. The incumbent removes barriers to future success and facilitates career planning. The focus of this role is the development and implementation of career strategies to improve a student s transition into the workplace and into related post-secondary programs. The incumbent works to ensure smooth transitions of high school students to a career or academic path and introduces a range of options. The job works to develop connections with students to be proactive in their future paths. This is a permanent, full-time, Out of Scope, Level 4 position with a salary range of $60, $75, Position to commence as soon as possible. The successful applicant s starting salary will be based on the individual s education, qualifications and directly related experience. Post-secondary education preparation Work with students to learn about specific career options requiring additional education Provide support in transitioning to post-secondary institutes Participate in quarterly vertical team meetings with school staff to develop action steps to improve individual student and subgroup transition success rate Guide students through the application process and receive assistance with funding and scholarship applications Provide post-secondary orientation and skill readiness 2. Career preparation Work with students to learn about specific work options and to identify career paths Assist individuals in the development of individual career plans Partner with organizations and local businesses to facilitate career opportunities Develop and deliver career related workshops for students to increase their knowledge of options possibilities Coach students in building career related skills including public speaking, leadership, teamwork and networking Work with students to create a portfolio including resume and interviewing techniques Facilitate career internships with partners to enable student to further explore possibilities 3. Life skills preparation Plan and collaborate on the development of programs with a team that includes administrators, teachers, advisors counselors, social workers and/or any other relevant service providers Model and coach students in personal interaction including teamwork, creativity, communication skills and selfadvocacy and healthy life choices 4. Develop relationships Establish relationships with students through modeling, mentoring, advocating and one-on-one meetings Connect individual students and their parents/guardians with community organizations and programs Engage families to participate in the student s growth Develop or work with local mentoring programs, business and community agencies to connect individual students with mentors Provide support and outreach to parents/guardians of students Work with students to begin the process of developing transition and career action plans to meet academic and postsecondary goals 6. Life skills and wellness Model and coach students in healthy life choices Develop and deliver life skills programs to provide youth access to cultural teachings, leadership development and connect youth to community resources Increase knowledge of well-being and healthy lifestyles Build an awareness of factors affecting personal well-being diet, exercise, drugs, etc. Provide tools and supports to develop, maintain and enhance personal well-being Provide tools and supports in dealing with grief, loss and anxiety 7. Participate in long- and short-term strategic planning for the program 8. Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The incumbent determines what resources are required for the student and pulls together a multi-disciplinary team. The work requires the incumbent to identify opportunities and is required to build relationships in multiple school sites. The job works with significant independence with access to assistance being not readily available as the manager is offsite. The incumbent is required to have the ability to navigate multiple post-secondary systems. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. The Bridging Futures Project will enhance the capacity of urban Indigenous youth to be self-reliant by shifting attitudes and values that promote lifelong labour force attachment; transfer skills related to self-advocacy and navigating systems; healthy living; school attachment and bridging to work and post-secondary education. Activities empower youth to become leaders of character, vision and action by providing multi-component culturally-based bridging experiences which will build on the award winning Braided Journeys Initiative.
