1 FISHING, HUNTING AND TRAPPING (NAICS 1 114) About this report This is a summary of forecast information available about this industry in the 2025 B.C. Labour Market Outlook forecast. An overview of this forecast is provided in the main report which is available at: 1. Outlook Highlights: Above Average Growth, Below Average Replacement Demand The Fishing, Hunting and Trapping industry is expected to see an increase in employment over the medium term as demand for seafood exports continues to expand. Over the longer term after 2020 the forecast assumes employment will level off due to limits on the allowable catch and productivity improvements. Over the ten years of the forecast, this industry s employment will grow by 1.2% - the average growth rate of B.C. employment. The industry is expected to have over 1,100 job openings over the next ten years. 1.1 Industry employment and job openings in B.C., 2016 Growth (Average Annual ) Replacements 2 as Share of Number of Workers Share of B.C Number of (10 Year Sum) Share of B.C. Industry Definition 3 The Fishing, Hunting and Trapping industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in harvesting fish and other wild animals from their natural habitats. These establishments are dependent upon a continued supply of the natural resource. The harvesting of fish is the predominant economic activity of this subsector and it usually requires specialized vessels that, by the nature of their size, configuration and equipment, are not suitable for any other type of production, such as transportation. Hunting and trapping utilize a wide variety of production processes and are classified in the same subsector as fishing because the availability of resources and the constraints imposed, such as conservation requirements and proper habitat maintenance, are similar. 1 NAICS: North American Industry Classification System 2 Replacements are retirements, deaths and other permanent labour force exits. 3 As defined by Statistics Canada following NAICS The source of this section is Statistics Canada.
