1 INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of Western European paintings in the world with more than 2,000 works dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20 th century. The collection provides inspiration for engagement and life-long learning opportunities for all ages. The Education Department forms part of the Public Programmes and Partnerships directorate, with Exhibitions and National Programmes. These departments work together to ensure that we put our audiences and their needs at the heart of our activities. The National Gallery Education Department provides creative learning programmes for Adults and for Children and Young People. Services are delivered by a core team of Creative Programmers, Educators and Artists, supported where necessary by project workers and freelance suppliers. The Department s collaborative projects extend beyond London, working with colleagues across the UK. The department s current strategic objectives are: 1. To strengthen the role of National Gallery Education on the Cultural Learning Landscape 2.To position the Gallery as a key player in supporting the role of Art and Design and Art History in Education 3.To create a programme of high quality life-long and life-wide learning experiences onsite, offsite and digitally These objectives are supported by the work delivered across the department. The Creative Learning Programmes team delivers daily programmes and special projects for the following audiences: Independent adult visitors Adult special interest groups Adults with access requirements (this includes adults with autism or learning disabilities and visitors who are blind or partially sighted or deaf/hard of hearing. Schools and Teachers Families Young People (aged 16-25)

2 Free talks, lectures, guided tours and participatory events are programmed for adults throughout the year. This is complemented with a seasonal ticketed programme of art history courses, workshops and study days. Programmes for children and young people include talks and practical art workshops for schools, teachers and families and tailored sessions for SEN (Special Educational Needs) students. The programme also covers Inset (In service training) and CPD (continuing professional development) for teachers and trainees. Family events include a holiday programme, weekly events and a range of Cultural Celebration days throughout the year. The programme for Young People is under development and includes a year-long training opportunity for a cohort of Young Producers.

3 Creative Learning Programmes Manager Band 4 ROLE SUMMARY AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The Creative Learning Programmes Manager will be part of the leadership team of the Department, with responsibility for the development and delivery of creative learning programmes. This is a new role devised to facilitate the delivery of the Gallery s Education Strategy in alignment with wider organisational objectives. A critical creative objective of the role is to ensure holistic public programming across the team and to develop the digital ambitions of the department. The principle purpose of the role is to lead on development and delivery of consistent and high quality content for the Creative Learning Programmes across the Department. The post-holder will be responsible for a team of programmers each focusing on an identified audience segment. The successful candidate will have a strong background in creative programming, cultural learning, partnership working, an understanding of impact and evaluation and a strong focus on building new digital service offerings to complement and extend the reach of the Gallery. The post holder will have departmental responsibility for leading on integrating the department s creative outputs with those of the other departments within the public programmes and partnerships directorate (exhibitions and national programmes). The post-holder will deputise for the Head of Education as and when appropriate. The post-holder will be required to comply with National Gallery policies (including Safeguarding and Health and Safety). MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES Motivate, lead and inspire a team of creative programmers to develop and shape innovative learning content To take an overall and holistic view on programme content, while ensuring that it encompasses the collection and temporary exhibitions, covering all audiences and age ranges. Lead on developing new digital learning programmes to extend the reach of the gallery Ensure integration of the department s creative outputs into national and international strategy for public programmes and partnerships Proactive monitoring of the department s budgets throughout the financial year making judgment based decisions to ensure effective utilisation, including planning for up to five years Work closely as part of the Education Leadership team to ensure the successful delivery of the Education Strategy through the Creative Learning Programmes. Identify new business opportunities and work with the Education Operations Manager to plan and deliver these

4 Work with the Education Researcher to identify potential research and/or advocacy opportunities. Make judgment based decisions about partnerships and potential opportunities for the benefit of the programme and the audiences. Monitoring the impact of creative learning programmes through the effective use of the department s evaluation framework, from creating logic models through to analysis of results, to ensure a continuous improvement environment. Actively seek new learning opportunities that can be applied to all programmes and look for opportunity to utilise across multiple audience segments. Actively seek opportunities to maintain knowledge and to keep pace with the existing and evolving digital market in order to identify new digital learning opportunities Deputise for the Head of Department internally and externally, representing the programme planning and creative content aspect of the department s work Diversity and Equal Opportunities To value and respect your colleagues and members of the public regardless of their background. ORGANISATIONAL ROLE The post holder reports to the Head of Education and has line management responsibilities. This job description is not intended to be exhaustive. The post-holder will be expected to adopt a flexible attitude to the duties which may vary subject to the needs of the Gallery, and in keeping with the general profile of this post.

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION Creative Learning Programmes Manager Band 4 QUALIFICATIONS A degree or Qualified Teacher Status (or similar equivalent) EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE Demonstrable professional experience as a practitioner in visual art education Extensive knowledge of the formal education sector and learning theory in action Demonstrable experience of devising one-off creative events and schemes of creative programming with educational content Proven success in leading high performing teams High degree of computer literacy including, but not limited to Word, Excel Outlook and internet applications Demonstrable experience of utilising digital innovations to enhance cultural learning experiences Demonstrable experience and skill in adapting writing style for different channels and to the needs of different audience groups. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Planning and Delivery Demonstrable ability to manage a complex workload to strict deadlines Proven successful experience of devising and implementing strategic plans The ability to define, manage and prioritise own and others workload without regular supervision Proven project management experience Problem Solving and Decision Making Demonstrable ability to make clear decisions within complex or stressful situations Ability to make clear, concise decisions without reference to senior manager Ability to resolve creative conflicts to ensure the smooth running of the department

7 SUMMARY OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Creative Learning Programmes Manager Band 4 Salary This post is on the Gallery s Band 4. Salary is 36,370-45,572 pa. Pay Review Gallery pay bands have a minimum and maximum only and there is no guaranteed progression through pay bands. Pay increases including progression through pay bands are dependent upon government public sector pay policy and affordability, and the Gallery s pay settlement arrangements. Hours The basic hours are 35 a week, excluding all breaks including lunch. Leave The annual leave allowance is 26½ days with pay, rising to 31½ days with pay after 5 years service. In addition there are 9 days public and privilege holidays. Probation The probationary period is 3 months. Pension The Gallery (through the Civil Service pension arrangements) offers a choice of pension provision, giving you the flexibility to choose the pension that suits you best. Broadly the contribution rate for most new starters is in a range between 4.6% to 7.35% (dependent on your salary) and the scheme provides a pension in line with the consumer prices index and benefits in the event of ill health retirement and death. Smoking Smoking is strictly prohibited in all parts of the National Gallery. However, in order to meet the needs of smokers, the Gallery had decided to exercise discretion to provide two designated smoking areas outside the main Gallery buildings. Security Screening and Safeguarding The appointment is subject to the Security Screening, which includes the verification of identity, employment history for the past 3 years, immigration status and criminal records. If appointed you will be subject to periodic re-screening of basic criminal records every 3 years.

8 If your role requires you to undertake regulated activity with children or adults who may be vulnerable or because the role is a profession eligible to ask for a DBS check (such as Chartered accountant, certified accountant, etc.) you will also be expected to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced criminal record check and if appointed you will be subject to periodic re-screening of enhanced criminal records every 3 years. NON-CONTRACTUAL TERMS, CONDITIONS AND OTHER FACILITIES Our staff café offers a range of subsidised hot and cold meals and snacks. Staff discount of 25% on all products bought from the Gallery s shops, and on food and drinks in our public self-service Café, Espresso Bar and Restaurant. Additionally, a higher discount of 50% is available on hot drinks in the self-service Café and the Espresso Bar. Free admission to our charging exhibitions and 4 complimentary guest tickets to our charging exhibitions. Use of our library, which is not open to the general public. Free entry or a concession at a number of museums and galleries. Free occasional staff lectures (normally held between am), which cover aspects of the Collection, temporary exhibitions and other topical subjects. Season ticket loans - with the exception of staff on casual contracts, all staff with at least two months service, are eligible to apply for an interest-free loan to buy a season ticket for their journey between home and work. An employee assistance programme (EAP) providing confidential advice and support is available for all staff, and their immediate families. This service is free of charge. Staff with at least 3 months service are able to access The Palette the Gallery s programme of voluntary flexible benefits via a web-based portal. The programme includes provision for holiday trading, childcare vouchers, cycle to work scheme and exclusive retailer discounts.

It also enables us to provide you with opportunities for developing yourselves as skilled professionals.
