2 About the Business Growth Centre Our organisation dates back to 1998 when our name was the Lake Macquarie Small Business Centre (LMSBC). We now trade as the Business Growth Centre, retaining our legal name as Lake Macquarie Business Centre Ltd. We are a not-for-profit business development centre, business incubator and training organisation, governed by a group of highly successful local business owners on behalf of the Lake Macquarie community. Our purpose is to support and grow businesses. As a business incubator, the Centre provides support services to enable people to develop sustainable businesses that continue to grow. Our facilities include 15 light industrial units and nine offices. To assist and encourage business start-ups, we offer rental below the commercial market rate. Leases can be either short term or long term. We support our tenants by providing services relevant to their businesses. These support services include secretarial, bookkeeping, marketing and business planning. We also offer our tenants informal mentoring to assist their knowledge and skill development. As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), we provide nationally recognised training in business and management from Certificate III to Diploma level. We also offer short workshops and seminars to assist tenants, business owners and employees to develop their businesses and/or business skills. As a Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) we support our members, tenants and local businesses by hosting networks and delivering business events. We offer business advice and assist new and established businesses in developing business plans, on a modest fee for service basis. The Centre s hosts the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) program in Lake Macquarie and on Central Coast, which has run for many years. The program assists start-up businesses through business management training and mentoring throughout their initial development stage. These businesses usually continue their association with the Centre past their involvement in the program, with some becoming tenants in our business incubator. We demonstrate our capacity to deliver projects to the community through our recent energy efficiency project for businesses in the Lake Macquarie local government area. The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency provided funds for the project, which featured a successful partnership with Lake Macquarie City Council s Sustainability Department. We are also the home of the highly successful Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards, the premier local business event. Our most recent addition is the Lake Macquarie Business Network, which offers regular networking events across the local area. A secondary focus of this role is to promote opportunities for local businesses to engage with the Centre through its membership, sponsorship and network programs. Through this work, the Business Development Officer contributes towards achieving maximum profitability and business growth, supporting the Business Growth Centre s [the Centre] vision and business objectives. The also contributes to establishing plans and strategies to expand the Centre s customer base and to developing training and business growth programs for tenants, clients and members. The will have highly developed communication skills to enable them to promote, recognise and act on new business development opportunities. He or she will be able to expediently develop and maintain networks. ACCOUNTABILITIES The is accountable for the following activities: Generate revenue for the Centre through the sale of nationally recognised training [Diploma, Certificate and Units of Competency] and other Centre training programs with a specific focus on meeting activity targets for government funded training Contribute to the development of marketing strategies and materials, in consultation with the Centre Manager and Marketing Officer Implement Marketing Strategies to increase training sales and promote the Centre s brand BUSINESS GROWTH CENTRE VERSION /03/2016 PAGE 3

5 Work Health and Safety Information Package We place significant emphasis on maintaining a safe environment for staff, volunteers, clients and visitors. All workers are required to comply with our Work Health & Safety guidelines and must: carry out duties in a manner which does not adversely affect their health, safety and welfare, or that of others; cooperate with measures we provide for health, safety and welfare; undertake WHS training provided and correctly use any information, training, personal protective equipment or safety equipment we provide; and report any risk to health and safety, and where practicable, take corrective action. Selection Criteria Please do not assume that we will know your experience, skills, knowledge and personal qualities from your resumé. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE To succeed in this role requires: a background in business experience in business development within a not for profit or commercial environment understanding of current training market and NSW government funding, or capacity to develop knowledge quickly capacity to gather and analyse information to provide an appropriate customer solution demonstrated ability to deliver quality outcomes ability to achieve objectives safely and accurately superior communication and interpersonal skills efficient organisation and prioritisation skills, including accurate and timely documentation and recordkeeping competency in using the Microsoft Office Suite You must hold a current NSW Driver s licence and have your own reliable transport. The following items are an advantage but are not mandatory for the position: formal qualifications in business or business sales knowledge of/experience in the vocational education and training industry In addition to the above selection criteria, consideration will also be given to how well each applicant will fit into the existing BGC Team.
