This role sits in Save the Children UK (SCUK) s Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Division, which is responsible for our influencing work both in the UK and globally. The Division galvanises the public and influences policymakers on humanitarian action, sustainable development and help for children here in the UK. THE ROLE Reporting to the Executive Director of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns (who sits on the SCUK Board), this role will provide strategic leadership to the UK Poverty Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Department; bringing together senior analysts and advocates with world-class campaigners, ensuring that the policies which deliver for children in the UK are identified, communicated and adopted. The UK Poverty Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns team s workis clearly aligned behind our global objective to improve early learning outcomes for children in poverty, with a particular focus on childcare reform in the England context. Working closely with SCUK s Programme colleagues, the appointee will drive campaigns to improve the life chances of children in the UK. The Director of UK Poverty Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns will also play a leadership role across Save the Children, delivering specific cross-divisional or cross-organisational strategic initiatives that create a platform for SCUK to operate at the forefront of positive change in the sector. Key Accountabilities Provide strong strategic and operational leadership to the team, creating the framework and capability to drive an integrated advocacy and campaigns model across UK Poverty activity and ensuring all resources are deployed for maximum impact for children 1
3 As a member of the Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns senior leadership team contribute to the formation and execution of the strategy for a division of 110+ people. As a member of the organisation s Corporate Senior Leadership Team play a leading role in the management of one of the sector s biggest and highest impact organisations Align the work of the department with the strategy of the wider organisation, ensuring, through collaborative working, that initiatives on UK Poverty are mutually reinforcing with the work of the Programmes, Brand, Communications, Media and Fundraising teams Build, engage and manage the UK Poverty Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns department, bringing first rate people skills and management experience to the leadership of a team of technical experts To support the Director of UK programmes and other senior leaders in the UK programmes department to help drive the development of policy, advocacy and campaigns in in the devolved nations as part of a shared strategy between Policy, Advocacy and Campaigs and Programme colleagues. Be an authoritative external representative with the media, government, parliamentarians and other decision-makers, ensuring Save the Children is shaping relevant debates Provide thought leadership on UK Poverty by driving debate and thinking across Save the Children UK and then making targeted high impact public interventions Identify, build and lead innovative policy, advocacy and campaigns partnerships, managing strategic relationships to achieve greater impact for our work To keep our promises to children, to safeguard our staff, and to meet our obligations to those who support us and give us funding, we must identify and effectively manage the risks we face in all we do. As a senior manager you will be expected to play your part by: operating within the policies, procedures and controls set out by the charity from time to time and ensuring your team (if you have one) does the same, while also ensuring that specific working controls are in place to manage the risks within your direct area of responsibility; and supporting the Executive Directors in ensuring risk management and control is embedded into the charity s everyday business, critical decision making and strategic planning thus helping the charity to make informed decisions, and to take calculated risks for the benefit of children. 4 Working effectively with others: works collaboratively to achieve shared goals and thrives on diversity of people and perspectives; knows when to lead and when to follow and how to ensure effective crossboundary working Essential technical skills Proven ability to operate strategically, with a track record of winning significant policy change against the odds by deploying a wide-range of innovative policy, advocacy and campaigning techniques and tactics and leading others to do the same Experience of influencing UK political processes to secure long lasting policy change Education/ professional skills Demonstrable experience in building and leading teams, with clear ability to create a strong sense of shared values and engender a high performing culture, characterised by ambitious goals and high levels of communication and feedback Demonstrable experience of working at a senior level in complex global operating environments with a wide external network covering government, think tank, NGO and media contacts Personal skills Excellent political judgement to navigate the UK policy landscape as well as have an oversight of the landscape across the 4 UK nations. Energetic and motivated self-starter able to get cut through and engagement for UK Poverty issues inside a complex organization that works on competing priorties domestically and globally. Excellent communication skills with the ability to absorb and synthesise huge amounts of information at speed and prepare compelling and nuanced briefs for a wide range of internal and external audiences Commitment to Save the Children's vision, mission, values and approach 3
