Research shows that middle managers are key to business performance, but are often overwhelmed by continual demands too busy being run by the business to run the business. 3 THE NFL EXPERIENCE NFL develops the leadership capability of finance managers through one-to-one mentoring, peer learning groups and experiential workshops. The nine month programme enables participants to build a strong peer network. Participants keep a leadership journal that focuses them on applying the skills needed to progress from manager to leader. This provides feedback from peers, direct reports, line managers and stakeholders, and an external benchmark to help with objective setting for the programme. The 360 is re-run at the end of the programme to measure progress and identify next steps. NETWORKING EVENTS x 2 (evening) Finance leaders share practical insights into the reality of running a business in a senior management role. Previous speakers include Philip Vincent, CFO of BBC Worldwide and Tom Athron, FD of Waitrose. LEADERSHIP AND COMMERCIAL SKILLS WORKSHOPS x 6 (1 day) Practically focused workshops designed around overcoming the critical incidents that can stall the transition from manager to leader. PEER LEARNING GROUPS x 4 (half day) Participants work with a facilitator in small groups to apply the learning from the workshops using their current leadership challenges as case studies. MENTORING OR COACHING x 4 (1.5 hours per session) One-to-one meetings where participants focus on their career development or performance in role with either a business mentor or leadership coach.

Mentors and coaches are selected for their industry knowledge, leadership experience and practical focus. We work with participants to match their development needs with the expertise of a mentor or coach. 5 CASE STUDIES Mark Cummings Head of Regulatory Reporting, XL Insurance NFL participant Q. Did the programme meet your expectations? A. It more than met my expectations. After the first session of being infected with our facilitator s positive attitude, I was hooked. Q. What has been the greatest benefit for you to date? A. The mentor and peer group sessions. Being able to discuss complex issues in the workplace in a confidential environment with a mentor with a vast amount of experience gives you insightful perspectives. It also gives you an edge to make better informed decisions about your career and challenges you to go further than your expectations. Q. Describe how the programme helped you solve or work through a challenge you faced at work. A. It has helped me to return to my natural leadership style and find ways to get others to perform to the best of their ability. It lifted me out of my own comfort zone and challenged me to step forward and lead more. Q. How did it differ from other leadership programmes you have attended? A. The continuity of a full year s programme, being accountable to the peer group and knowing that I would be letting them down by not partaking, sets the NFL apart from any other programmes that I have been on. I had clear objectives to create my own style of leadership and that s what the programme provided. Q. How did it differ from other leadership programmes you have attended? A. This programme presented lots of tips and techniques and suggested using a mixture or a blend of them to suit your style and personality rather than telling us how we should or shouldn t do things. The peer learning groups also encouraged you to try things out and then feedback to the group in the next session. Dealing with real issues makes it more engaging and it is interesting hearing how things have worked for different people, as well as seeing how it works for you.
