5 The Black Country LEP response Set up the Black Country Skills Factory (Jan 2013) (using GIF funding from UKCES) The Black Country Skills Factory: commenced as an employer- led pilot project ( ) aiming to address the current skills shortfall in the High Value Manufacturing sector (HVM) in the Black Country for both large and small employers Key point : - Recruit credible Industry specialist to lead the project

Reflect new technology. 2 Apprenticeships Penetrate into SME s 3 School Engagement Increase pipeline of people wanting to enter into the HVM sector. 4 Skills Factory Communication First point of contact for skills in HVM

The Skills Factory, in collaboration with Apprenticeship providers, :- - Organised Apprenticeship Breakfasts for Employers (SME) a) Raise awareness and clarify options. b) Explain terminology and jargon c) Use Employers and actual Apprentices to showcase benefits d) Independent Advice and signposting to providers - Offered Wage subsidies (additional ) (Jun 2013 Mar 2015). - Trial different Apprenticeship models to offer SME s flexibility (supported by Wage Subsidies). 19 Progress & Activity to date Higher Apprenticeships (All Sectors) Higher Apprentices in the Black Country increasing 292 (2012) 671 (2014/15) 89% of these currently in Business Administration & Law and Health & Social Care High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Overall Apprenticeship starts in HVM increased by 11% over the year (Q4 Comparison) from 381 in 2012/13 to 509 in 2014/15. Higher Apprenticeships increased from 12 (2012/13) 33 (2014/15) This Black Country key sector has <5% of Higher Apprentices

23 Careers and Enterprise Company The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) is an employer-led organisation that aims to inspire and prepare young people for the fastchanging world of work. The CEC was incorporated in February It is a community interest company, funded through Dept of Education but independent of government. Its four core principles are: Test, learn and adapt Build on what works Work nationally, tailor locally Enable and convene the best programmes

Work closely with the EC to understand the local offer, provision and labour market Participate in an EA network use materials and the toolkit developed by The Careers & Enterprise Company and localised by the LEP Commit to work with a school for 12 months - c1 meeting per month
