4 Distance Learning Distance Learning is defined as an educational system in which the student is formally enrolled in an institution but receives instruction at some remote site. For distance learning students, this means an opportunity to achieve their educational dreams especially for those who are unable to attend conventional courses for a variety of reasons including but not limited to work commitment, distance, time, costs and even physical incapacity. IQ Academy is sensitive to the differences which exist between a student in a face-to-face environment compared to that of a distance learner. In a traditional arrangement, where the lecturer or facilitator is the main resource despite having textbooks and other aids. The lecturer sets the pace, gives information, explains, asks questions, answers questions, sets tasks, assesses such tasks, etc. In distance education the lecturer is replaced by tutors and learning material, yet all the tasks of the lecturer still need to be performed with the same rigor and effectiveness as can be expected from a quality learning programme. The distance education mode of delivery means that contact time, unlike that in a face-to-face institution, is very limited, if not impossible. Learning at a distance is not easy and, in order to guide students through our programmes and short courses, it is critical that students familiarise themselves with the approach taken by the institution in delivering learning and support. Different academic delivery systems and methods are put in place or made available to fully support the academic wellbeing of students which include, inter alia, telephonic support with well-versed teaching staff and tutors, live chats on Facebook and video technologies. All these supportive teaching and learning initiatives are put into place with the goal to enable teaching staff to bridge the gap between the student and the teacher. To ensure a student enjoys a quality learning experience, each of the items contained in our study packs, together with the support services we offer, has been carefully designed to make up for the lack of face-to-face contact. IQA adheres to a strict instructional design methodology in the production of quality learning materials that meet, or even exceed, the expectations of our students, regulators, industry and other stakeholders.
