Accessing recruitment support through Jobcentre Plus Lisa Atkin, Programme Lead Workforce Supply NHS Employers
Policy context Development of support workforce in spotlight - Francis and Cavendish. Talent for Care and Widening Participation. Support workforce deliver 60% patient care but receive hugely disproportionate amount of training budget. Adequate workforce supply = key component in delivering high-quality services.
How can JCP help? There is evidence to show that working with JCP can support the NHS with: 1. Recruiting for values. 2. Streamlining recruitment and reducing costs. 3. Delivering apprenticeships. 4. Securing future talent. 5. Improving social mobility.
Recruiting for values JCP are one of the most experienced recruiters in the country. Familiar with the demands placed on local healthcare providers. JCP can support you with delivery of assessment centres/sector-based work academies.
Streamlining recruitment and reducing costs Recruitment in large NHS organisations is often costly. JCP do not charge for their services. JCP s support in the form of venues, and other resources, and its tailored support to applicants has saved organisations time and money.
Delivering apprenticeships Apprenticeship can be a cost-effective means of creating a skilled, flexible and motivated workforce. JCP have links with training providers and have experts on hand who can advise you on funding arrangements. You can read more about apprenticeships and access a number of helpful tools and resources by visiting the NHS Employers apprenticeship webpages.
Securing future talent With an ageing demographic across the workforce, it s crucial that the NHS looks at ways to bring in more young people. JCP can support employers to adopt a grow your own approach.
Improving social mobility Health outcomes and employment status are inextricably linked. As biggest employer in Europe, the NHS has an important role to play in helping those at risk of long-term unemployment into work. JCP run a number of schemes that support those furthest from the labour market to access employment, work experience and volunteering opportunities.
Securing organisational support For a relationship between JCP and the NHS to flourish, there needs to solid support for partnership working at an organisational level. Emphasising how working with JCP can help to combat supply challenges and improve efficiency and productivity are key elements to making a robust argument for why this makes good business sense.
Business case A checklist: What are the benefits? Provide evidence link to research and existing best practice. Include data. Timescales for delivery and reporting arrangements. Identify key risks How will you evaluate impact?
Top tips for getting started 1. Establish contact with your local JCP district partnership manager to discuss how they can support your recruitment needs. 2. Agree objectives, preferred model of delivery and roles and responsibilities. 3. Avoid use of jargon to ensure both parties have a clear understanding
Top tips for getting started 4. Involve JCP staff in promotion, recruitment and selection processes. 5. Establish regular communication protocols both at a strategic and operational level. 6. Celebrate success and encourage the spread of best practice via events, case studies and newsletters.

Have held a number of employment promotion events in past years for our mental health service users who face particular challenges in returning to work. Update service users and staff on benefits changes. De-mystify and take the fear out of using JCP and returning to work. Find out valuable information on support available from financial to personal.
Partnership NELFT staff have provided training and awareness workshops for JCP staff on mental health. De-stigmatise mental health by improving awareness. Reduce prejudice by providing evidence to challenge beliefs that people with mental health issues cannot work or don t want to work. Provide more tailored support to those who wish for it with supporting our service users to find and retain work.
