Organizational Information: The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment, and to implement Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public. Along with nuclear power plants, the CNSC regulates many other types of nuclear facilities and applications. These include: uranium mines and mills; facilities that process uranium and fabricate nuclear fuel; research facilities; nuclear substances, such as medical isotopes used to treat cancer; and specialized instruments, such as industrial radiography cameras and nuclear gauges. For more information about the CNSC, visit nuclearsafety.gc.ca Summary of Duties: Reporting to the Director, the Geoscience Assessment Officer will be responsible to:
2 Conduct specialist assessments and provide support to other specialists for assessments and licensing. Participate in technical inspections. Draft reports and other documentation. Manage research projects related to area of specialization. Support national and international program activities. Statement of Qualifications: Education: Master s degree in science or engineering in one or more of the following areas: geotechnical, geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, hydrology. Experience: Extensive experience in the assessment of industrial or natural resource activities on the geosphere or radioactive waste safety Intermediate experience in working with different stakeholders Intermediate experience in working on or leading multi-disciplinary teams Experience in developing research projects in the geosciences Knowledge: Theories and principles of one or more of the following fields: geotechnical, geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, hydrology; as it relates to the assessment of risks to the environment and the public Field and laboratory investigation techniques, modelling, and performance/safety
3 assessment techniques Project management principles and processes Nuclear Safety and Control Act, regulations and other legislation relevant to environmental protection, waste management and safety Standards and guidance related to waste management and safety Inspection techniques, procedures and practices Competencies: Model the CNSC values Be Accountable & Achieve results Collaborate effectively with others Commit to your Professional Growth & Personal Leadership Official Languages : English essential Asset Qualifications: Education: PhD in science or engineering in one or more of the following areas: geotechnical, geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, hydrology. Experience: Intermediate experience in the geological disposal of radioactive wastes or other wastes Knowledge: Nuclear fuel cycle facilities, including mining, processing, power reactors and waste management facilities Organizational Needs: The CNSC is committed to building a skilled and diverse workforce reflective of Canadian society. 4 Hiring Conditions: Candidates must meet and maintain the following hiring conditions throughout their employment. Security: Reliability Status This position requires a Canadian Reliability Status. The security clearance is a basic hiring condition and normally requires that you have five (5) years of verifiable personal background history. History that cannot be verified may be grounds for denial of clearance. Mobility: All CNSC employees are subject to mobility and may be transferred to a different work unit or geographical location due to operational requirements.
