Edmonton Catholic Schools requires an Assistant Manager, Social Work to provide assistance to the Manager, Social Work in the supervision of Family School Liaison Social Worker staff. The incumbent coaches and mentors teams in the delivery of social services. The job also orientates and mentors social work staff about the skills of the profession to other District staff including teachers, Educational Assistants (EA), and Early Learning Facilitators (ELF), in the discipline of expertise as required. The incumbent assists the manager in the development and delivery of specialized services. The range of assistance provided includes: collecting data on department deliverables, developing and maintaining standards of practice, developing resources, and providing/organizing discipline specific professional development activities. The incumbent must be able to utilize their area of expertise in ensuring that professional conduct and integrity within their field of expertise is adhered to. Primary Responsibilities: Supervise and support staff in the attainment of the goals and objectives; Assign, delegate and evaluate work and manage staff attendance; Lead staff including orientation to role, standards and practices; Conduct follow-up classroom and school visits and observation of FSLSW staff in oneon-one and/or group sessions; Develop and maintain relationships with parents, community agencies, children and other stakeholders to align needs with District services; Work with the manager to ensure the development and establishment of District standards, continuity of services and support and assist in research projects; Develop, support and maintain standards for inclusive intervention. Qualifications: Degree in Social Work, plus three years directly related experience working with children, families and social service agencies; Full registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (General Practice Permit) is mandatory; Knowledge of relevant Regulatory Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics for Registered Social Workers and the impact of the bio-psycho-social elements of a students learning and family dynamics; Strong leadership, supervisory and team building skills; Superior oral and written communications skills and the ability to communicate highly technical information to parents and others outside of the profession; Flexibility is essential for this incumbent given the variety of children s abilities, needs and conditions and the complexities of working as a cohesive team; Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident. Mentorship and consultation Mentor new staff to understand the context of working in a school environment and with educators Work with staff who are having difficulty preparing counselling goals for students and supportive goals for families Assist manager with follow-up supervision visits of staff Promote and facilitate peer support groups at the request of the FSLSW staff Provide regular feedback on staff performance and follow up Liaise with teachers, EAs, ELFs, other multi-disciplinary team members and parents who participate as part of each child s program planning team Ensure staff work collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary team Assist manager in the recruitment of social work practicum students Provide mentorship to FSLSW staff who supervise work practicum students Ensure all staff are following and aware of current standards of practice as laid forth by Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) Revised November 7,

Communication Develop and maintain relationships with parents, community agencies, children and other stakeholders to align needs with District services Model and work with the team on building and maintaining these relationships Promote program services and increase awareness of the social work discipline Increase awareness of and promote specialized resources within the District 4. Program planning and delivery Work with the manager to ensure the development and establishment of District standards, continuity of services and support and assist in research projects Support and participate in collaborative processes Collaborate with internal and external clients, partners and stakeholders to identify, select, develop and produce high quality resources Assist manager in evaluating Family Oriented Programming and presentations facilitated by staff 5. Inclusive intervention standards Develop, support and maintain standards for inclusive intervention Ensure consistencies in reporting and documentation Collaborate with other assistant managers and supervisors to build staff capacity and enhance skills in program planning, implementation and documentation Oversee staff in the writing of assessments and counselling goals such as year-end summaries Ensure standards are established with the team who work with all students/children regardless of need Collaborate with other assistant managers and inclusive education staff for integrated service delivery wherever possible Ensure data is collected to support the evaluation of the unit s performance and outcomes 6. Professional development Ensure inclusive educational philosophy is understood and incorporated into student and/or family goals Collaborate with the manager to ensure professional development opportunities supports FSLSW scope of practice Assist in the development and implementation of in-house presentations and other PD activities Work with staff to generalize strategies to natural environments, which include programming in the classroom, home and new environments Assist the team and manager in creating PD activities for other inclusive education and school staff Advise, encourage and mentor staff in their current role and to encourage opportunities for leadership within the school context Maintain technical knowledge and professional credentials through a range of activities PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The incumbent must be able to resolve situations with staff in the event of concerns/challenges. The incumbent is expected to resolve these problems independently; however, for more complex or unusual problems, guidance is available through the manager. The incumbent must be able to utilize their area of expertise/discipline in ensuring that professional conduct and integrity within their field of expertise is adhered to. When an employee s performance is challenged due to professional integrity, the critical lens of the incumbent would be integral to ensuring proper follow through and accountability within the profession in assistance to the manager. The job will identify performance problems and work with the manager to develop a management plan to address gaps and to document for the review process. The implementation of the plan to address gaps in service can be carried out by the Revised November 7,
4 incumbent with direction of the manager. I n situations where appropriate improvement is not observed, and progressive discipline is warranted the incumbent will pass the situation onto the manager to address. In cases, where termination is contemplated, the manager and Human Resource Services will be involved. The incumbent must also be able to support staff in resolving conflicts with inclusive education, school staff and/or families. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of the process of discipline through the Alberta College of Social Workers and assist the manager in maintaining the highest level of professional integrity for staff so as to not warrant a formal investigate from a regulatory body. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. Include examples that indicate the size of the job. Attach a complete Organization Chart that includes supervisor, peers, direct reports and staff. The job assists the Manager, Social Work in the day-to-day administrative operations including planning and preparing the annual budget and providing input on projected and actual expenditures within discipline area. The incumbent directly supervises FSLSW within their area of discipline. The job coaches, mentors and addresses performance gaps for the staff. There are approximately 52 professionals and the team is expected to grow as the demand for social workers in our schools increase. Social workers provide support to, and their work directly impacts students and families with bio-psycho-social difficulties which impacts their ability to learn. The incumbent therefore has a far-reaching impact on the ability of staff to support the teacher and other school staff and the affected students/children and their families.
