4 Business Professionals Tuesday, May 10, :15AM 11:45AM / Paul Holmes Return on Investment: The Why, What and How of Diversity Training Targeted training is a very effective strategy for unlocking immigrant potential and cultivating a more inclusive workplace. But what are the elements of a successful training initiative? This session looks at why diversity training is essential to a team s health and productivity, what sort of return to expect from the investment, and what organizations and leaders should be prepared to contribute to ensure the maximum return. 12:30PM 2:00PM / Judith Hayes and Dayna Hinkel Diversity: Building an Organizational Framework Given Canada s population diversity, successful organizations need to look at the broad benefits that an integrated diversity program can provide for organizational growth and inclusiveness. This workshop will present a framework for ensuring that a commitment to diversity extends throughout the organization and well beyond the initial hiring of diverse employees. Participants will have an opportunity to identify strategies to leverage diversity to ensure organizational growth now and into the future. 2:15PM 3:45PM / Melenie Olfert Intercultural Communication in a Diverse Workplace In today s diverse workplace, communication challenges can take on an added dimension of complexity. Within every culture, there are sets of assumptions and expectations involved in face-to-face interactions, and getting a point across effectively can be difficult. Even when a language barrier doesn t exist, intercultural communication can be one of the most challenging aspects of workplace diversity. Participants will take away strategies to improve effective intercultural communications at work. Wednesday, May 11, :15AM 11:45AM / Dr. Neil McDonald Diversity: The Workplace Challenge Diversity related challenges are present in almost every workplace, whether they are large corporations or small business operations. This interactive presentation will provide a brief introduction to diversity as the new Canadian reality and the challenges it presents for the workplace. Take away practical strategies for recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse employees and how to create a respectful and inclusive workplace for all. 12:30PM 2:00PM / Joyce Odidison Supervising a Diverse Workforce Capitalizing on the benefits of a diverse workplace takes more than hiring diverse team members. It is an effective approach to leverage the differences the varying viewpoints, backgrounds, and experiences of employees and to find ways for different groups to interact with each other. Participants will address some of the diversity challenges that supervisors in a diverse workplace are faced with, and leave with possible solutions. 2:15PM 3:45PM Best Practices: Diversity in the Workplace: Case Studies Employers share their successful workplace diversity approaches and strategies. 4
5 Educators Tuesday, May 10, :15AM 11:45AM / Stephen Hayes Culture in the Classroom As our communities become more diverse, so do our classrooms. Cultural difference and expectations in the classroom can create a dynamic learning environment but also perpetuate the gap between educators and learners. This session will highlight how acknowledging cultural difference can promote clarity, understanding and culturally literate learners. Learn how to explore and utilize cultural differences as a vehicle for positive change and to equip students with a progressive lens through which to view the world. 12:30PM 2:00PM / Paul Holmes The Psychology of Integration: Unraveling the Hidden Dimension Can we accelerate an immigrant s sense of belonging in Canadian society? Immigrant adjustment to the Canadian context includes a critical psychological dimension, which if left unexplored can prolong integration and make a meaningful sense of belonging seem elusive. This session will introduce the behavioural, cognitive and emotive aspects of integration, and share strategies that enable immigrants to navigate these complexities more skillfully. 2:15PM 3:45PM / Mitch Bourbonniere Aboriginal Inclusion in the Classroom Gain practical strategies in this interactive workshop on creating inclusive educational environments that respect and celebrate the diversity of all participants. The facilitator will share his experiences teaching Indigenous learners and describe Indigenous practices in his personal teaching style. A fundamental underpinning of this workshop is the belief that working more effectively with Indigenous students results in more effective teaching with all students. Wednesday, May 11, :15AM 11:45AM / Claudius Soodeen and Sandra Sukhan International Educator Certificate Educators will have the opportunity to learn about Red River College s International Educator Certificate pilot program. This multi-module program is specifically designed for educators who require the skills necessary for teaching and supporting international students as well as for teaching abroad. Through this program, educators will develop intercultural competency and an understanding of the practical aspects of teaching in international settings or to audiences that include international learners. 12:30PM 2:00PM / Dr. Neil McDonald Diversity: Making It Work Educators know that workplace diversity is essential to creativity and productivity. This interactive presentation will speak to some of the best practices for diversity in the workplace. Educators will build awareness on Manitoba s diverse workforce, how to prepare their diverse learners for working in Canada, and learn more about successful integration programs in both the private and public sector. 2:15PM 3:45PM Best Practices: Diversity in the Classroom Educational institutions and organizations share their successful approaches and strategies for supporting diversity in the classroom. 5
