Sample Reports for Diploma & Certificate Programs Work Term Report By: Howard Miller Student # Mechanical Engineering / Design and Drafting Co-op For: Lorena Crowdis Advisor April 12/2009 XYZ Manufacturing Dave Smith, Supervisor sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 1

This past work term I have been employed at XYZ Manufacturing. It proved to be quite enjoyable as well as rewarding. Working in the AE Test Lab at XYZ did get quite stressful at times due to the heavy workload, but this only helped me to constantly refine and improve my work skills. Overall, it was very worthwhile working with the world leaders in auto liquid cooling systems. I learned so many new skills at XYZ, and it is difficult to pick only two to describe. Technical Skill The most valuable technical skill that I learned has to be "heat transferring testing". I chose this skill because it is very scientific, and requires constant attention to detail. The tests were also our primary job, although other tasks were performed daily. This sort of testing consists of a wind tunnel, schematic thermocouples and computer software. These are only the main components, as there were other manual read devices used such as pressure gauges. First, the cooler (test sample) had to be attached to the wind tunnel very precisely to ensure that there were no air leaks. An oil supply was then connected to the cooler to produce the accurate heat levels that the cooler would be exposed to during normal use. The thermocouples are then set up just outside the face of the tunnel to read the air temperature coming from the radiator. This reading is then compared to the ambient room temperature giving you a "heat transfer". The oil that is pumping through the radiator also experiences a heat transfer due to the drop in pressure from in to out, as well as the ambient air being blown through it. My job was to correctly balance these heat transfers within a 3% margin of error. In short, the test is proving that heat gained = heat lost. We were also responsible for collecting other data such as SCFM (Standard Cubic Foot per Minute) readings, air pressure drops, barometric pressure, etc. The main reason I chose this skill over any others is that XYZ is one of very few companies that actually do this sort of testing. Therefore, my experience in this field could prove to be valuable in the future. Transferable Skill Communication was extremely important in the AE Test Lab to save time, money and to ensure accurate data output. I have been practicing this transferable skill every minute of every hour of every day at work. For example, if one of my associates measures a cooler and relays the measurement to me to input into the computer, we have to communicate very clearly to make certain that the correct data is being recorded. If he says one thing and I hear another, it could spoil the whole test. If the measurements are not entered correctly, then the airflow is calculated improperly as well as the air pressure drop and the heat transfer reading. So, as you can see, attention to detail as well as clear and precise communication is key factors in completing a successful test. sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 2

I also had the responsibility of dealing with internal engineers as well as out of company customers who visited our lab. If someone approached me in the lab while I was working and had a problem or a question about results, they expected me to be able to help them. Many tours from such companies as Behr, BMW, Audi and Polaris came to the lab frequently to see new developments and improvements. If one of their representatives asked me a question, I would have to respond without hesitation to ensure their trust in XYZ to do their testing. These examples lead me to believe that communication was the most important transferable skill I learned at my work site. As one can see, my work term was very challenging, but taking on that challenge only led to great rewards. I would recommend this position to any of my fellow students and plan to re-apply next semester. It was definitely the best job I have ever had. sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 3

I began my co-op on May first at DBL Corporation. DBL is a young Canadian computer reseller that is continuing to grow. Last year they experienced exceptional sales. When I found this out about the company I was excited and even more excited when I was asked for a second interview. Obviously I was later offered the position of Office Administrator in Head Office, with accounting, managerial and marketing responsibilities. In the beginning, I was very aware of the skills that I had that I felt would be an asset to them. Over the period of my work term, there was a significant amount of training and developing of past skills. The new skills that I have learned over the past three months have helped redefine what I can now offer to an employer. I have analyzed, organized, formulated, evaluated and upgraded many of my skills and the list could go on and on. For the purpose of this report, I will only focus on a few of the skills that I feel give justice to my co-op experience. I feel that an important aspect of a new job is the development of one s personality according to the new environment. I was faced with a challenge that I felt helped me develop patience/understanding as a transferable skill: I was given a task by the president of the company and after the job was finished he came over, looked at it, gave me the OK and told me to it to him. At that point it was late in the day and I neglected to save my work and closed down my work and lost what I had done. This negative experience taught me a valuable lesson about saving everything, and how important it is when completing any task to take the time to see that it is finished. My boss was very understanding and patient with me during my brief crisis period, showing me that it is important to maintain a professional attitude with your co-workers despite their level of experience. This situation proved to be a valuable lesson in patience. It was also an example of learning from one's mistakes, and in this case, making the best out of an embarrassing situation. A perfect example of organization as a transferable skill is a task that I was given in the first week of my placement: I was given the task of developing a rebate system between DBL as the reseller and two of our largest suppliers. Rebates are a big issue in the framework of our business, as sales rep. commissions are also based on the claimed rebate totals. I was given a template and later told to figure out how it works, make the necessary contacts and maintain a system. After a rocky start and a couple of different formatting attempts, I finally received some feedback. With the feedback from my new contacts I had developed a logical system which my co-workers and superiors understood. I truly believe that in developing this system, I gained confidence early on in my work term as well as a higher level of respect from my peers. sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 5

Technical skills are also a great aspect when applying for other jobs, for they can, depending on the skills, make the person more valuable before the job begins. The greatest technical skill I developed at DBL was learning their computer software system. I have previous knowledge in SAP, however DBL uses Business Visions. Both are widely used but Business Vision is used by the smaller to medium sized companies where I am more likely to be working in the future. As my job description became more defined and I began to learn more of the applications with the software, I found myself able to solve internal as well as customer problems. An example of when I noticed I had in fact developed this technical skill is through a comparison of my reaction, or should I say, confidence in responding to sales representatives' requests. Early in my placement, aside from not being able to distinguish between sales reps., I was not able to help them. I knew that I was slowing down their job when I could not provide them with information that they needed. After a month of working with the Business Visions software, I became more familiar with its various applications. I became more confident and dependable to help my team out when they needed it. I know that I will most likely change careers 5 or 6 times as this is what statistics tell me. Because of this fact it is important for me to be able to analyze the skills that I developed and learned and be able to explain them as an asset to my next possible employer. I will now be able to pride myself on being patient, understanding and organized. I will simply explain that because of my co-op placement at DBL I was able to take on new responsibilities in a new circumstance. I can explain how I am an organized and understanding individual and how I learned the importance of this in developing the rebate program and being able to ask questions when feelings of uncertainty arose. I have learned that it is important to be patient with others, but more importantly, an understanding of one's own tasks of the job to be performed. I have reflected on those skills both transferable and technical and decided how I could now manipulate them to my advantage to find a job. I am confident that the skills that I have developed and learned will serve me well, and more importantly my next employer, even better in the future. sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 6

Work Term Report For the summer 2006 work term, I was employed at Neighbourhood Pharmacy in Brampton. Neighbourhood Pharmacy is a small and personable pharmacy. Because the pharmacy is small and not as busy as some of the other bigger chains, I was able to practice a wide variety of skills. I was able to do all of the jobs of a pharmacy technician. I found my experience to be very rewarding and worthwhile. I have learned a number of technical skills, but I would say that the most valuable technical skill was working with the Kroll Pharmacy computer system. Because I had 2 semesters of work with this computer system, I was happy to find out that Neighbourhood Pharmacy used this system. My first day on the job, I went in knowing quite a bit about Kroll and feeling confident enough to work with it. But I soon found out that using Kroll in a learning situation is quite different than using Kroll in an actual pharmacy. I learned something new about Kroll everyday, which is very rewarding. I also know that because I now know this system in both theory and in learning, I am confident enough to learn other systems. I am told that a lot of other computer systems are very close to that of Kroll, so this would be very beneficial in an interview situation because I would be able to adapt and learn other computer systems very easily. The most valuable transferable skill I have learned by far in this co-op is the ability to be organized. A pharmacy technician has a large number of jobs and duties that need to be on a day-today basis. If you are not organized and develop a solid time management schedule, then these jobs may not get done. At Neighbourhood Pharmacy, my daily jobs and duties require me to take in prescriptions by customers, process them (put on computer screen), pull the medication off the shelf and count the pills, wait for the pharmacist to check it and then bag it and cash it out to the customer. This happens all throughout the day. Along with dispensing the medication, I also receive the orders, log the narcotics and put away the order. Make sure the inventory is of adequate supply, check for expired products, then send them back to the supplier (this is done for the entire store by the technician), and also straighten and stock the shelves, and place the order at the end of the night. As you can see there are a wide number of things to be done in just one day that can be very time consuming. So without the ability to be organized, things may not get done, and I have not done my job properly. Because I have learned how to be organized, and can manage my time, employers will find this a very important quality in an employee. Whether working in a pharmacy or any other job situation, organization is an asset. I believe I have developed a very valuable skill that will benefit me in the long run. My work term has showed me and taught me many valuable skills that I will use now and forever, and in any job situation. I am confident in what I am doing and I am sure that as time goes by, sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 8

that this confidence will only grow, to make me a very professional pharmacy technician. I am very lucky to have had such an opportunity as the co-op to be able to develop and fine tune my skills. sample_work_term_reports_all_diploma_and_certificate_programs.docx Page 9
