2 Introduction: The Bank of Canada has been going through the process of changing the design of our Canadian bills and coins. Not only have they changed the way they are made and what they are made of, they are looking to change the images on them. Each series of Canadian bills have different designs that attempt to represent the history and identity of our country. While we move through our unit on Friends and Enemies and learn about all the important historical events leading up to and including the War of 1812 I will ask you to keep in mind the people and moments that you think are the most significant.
3 Your Assignment! It is your assignment to create new designs based on the people, places, and events that we cover during our Friends and Enemies unit to replace the current pictures that cover the current series of Canadian coins and bills. 1. Using your Recording History Chart choose the people, events, places and things about Canadian history that you believe are the most important and use them in the design of our new Canadian money. 2. You will create a design for both sides of the quarter, toonie, five, ten, twenty, fifty, and hundred dollar bill. 3. Design your money to look like a real Canadian bill. We will go over the design elements in class. 4. Name your new series of Canadian bills and give each bill a title: The previous series of Canadian money was called Canadian Journey as it documented significant aspects of Canada s culture. 5. You will write a rationale for each denomination that answers the following questions: How did these conflicts/events/people impact Canada and North America? And why do you believe they are the most significant in Canadian history?
4 Keep in mind the following: When deciding which historical people, places, and events to include on your money, keep in mind which denominations you deem most important. For example is the $100 bill more important because it is worth the most, or is the $20 bill more important because it is more frequently used. In other words which denominations should depict the most important and which the least important events? Be prepared to rank your choices from least to most important and provide a rationale (explanation of your choices).

7 Canadian Money Scoring Guide Your designs and rationales should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the chosen people, places and/or events depicted. Evidence must be provided that demonstrates a solid reasoning behind why you believe that these people, places, and/or events are important enough to be memorialized on our Canadian money. A 4 Assignment: Contains a well-written and properly structured paragraph explanation that describes the reasoning behind your choices. Answers the question How did these conflicts/events/people impact Canada and North America? Is an accurate historical representation of actual people, places, and/or events Creatively represents the people/places/events that you have chosen Pictures and symbols on your money are well designed and organized in a way that is physically appealing and could realistically be chosen to appear on our Canadian money. A 3 Assignment: Contains a paragraph explanation that describes the reasoning behind why you chose the people/places/events that you did. Is a somewhat accurate historical representation of actual people/places/events Represents the people/places/events that you have chosen, but not very creatively Pictures and symbols on your money are well chosen and designed but not very well organized A 2 Assignment: Contains a paragraph explanation that describes the reasoning behind why you chose the people/places/events that you did but is not very well-written or in proper paragraph structure. Does not accurately represent the people/places/events that you have chosen as the most significant Represents the people/places/events that you have chosen but does not display much effort Pictures and symbols are chosen and designed but are quite disorganized with little physical appeal A 1 Assignment: Does not contain a paragraph explanation that describes the reasoning behind your choices Does not represent the people/places/events that you have chosen accurately Pictures and symbols are not well chosen or designed and are quite disorganized with little appeal.
