1 Intercultural Development (ID) Leader What is Intercultural Development (ID)? Intercultural Development (ID) engages students in building an inclusive community with one- time and on- going opportunities. Students reflect on and share their own experiences while learning from others and their different perspectives. ID fosters intercultural communication skills, identity development, and ally- ship. Committed to inclusive excellence and trained in facilitation, ID Leaders are students who run many of the ID modules: Connect: A year- long series based in the first- year residence halls Invest: Dialogue opportunities that further explore multiple dimensions of cultural and identity Safe Zone: Workshops that inform the campus about the LGBTQIA community The Intercultural Center (IC) is currently seeking sixteen ID Leaders for the academic year, with specific consideration given to those who can help expand the Safe Zone training program for future years. Who are the Intercultural Development (ID) Leaders? Intercultural Development (ID) Leaders are students with a passion for building inclusive community and for working with their peers to accomplish this goal. We, at Saint Mary s College of California, cherish the inherent dignity of all people and believe that our community is enriched by the diversity each individual brings. We are most successful when each person is valued, respected, and supported. As peer educators, ID Leaders are trained in facilitation and participate in on- going self- exploration and skill- building to best serve their peers. This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in social justice education, diversity training, and community building. 2 Intercultural Development (ID) Leader Position Description Responsibilities & Expectations: Students serving as Intercultural Development (ID) Leaders will work throughout the academic year (fall, January, and spring terms). ID Leaders will complete approximately six to eight hours per week, which is comprised of bi- weekly staff meetings, workshop facilitation, office and research hours. In addition, ID Leaders agree to the following expectations: 1. Return early to campus on Friday, August 23 rd 2013 and attend the required August Training (Friday, August 23 rd - Friday, August 30 th ) which includes assisting with first year move- in. Please plan summer job and travel plans accordingly. 2. Attend bi- weekly team meetings for on- going staff development 3. Maintain in regular communication with the ID Advisor 4. Maintain regular office hours each week (compiling & evaluating data, assisting in workshop planning, and preparing for upcoming sessions) 5. Keep track of hours worked (both in office and during facilitation) 6. Co- facilitate Connect sessions throughout the academic year 7. Co- facilitate Invest sessions throughout the academic year 8. Co- facilitate Safe Zone ally trainings throughout the academic year 9. Other duties as assigned Qualifications: Students who are interested in applying must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be making progress toward sophomore, junior, or senior academic standing for the academic year at the time of application. Must be a sophomore, junior or senior to begin serving in the position by the fall 2013 semester. 2. Must be available to serve for the entire academic year (fall, January, and spring terms) 3. Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher 4. Must attend the required training sessions (see above) 5. Must be available for bi- weekly meetings, continual dialogue, and reflection (schedule set based on the class schedule of the ID Leader team) 6. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills 7. Must be comfortable with public speaking and leading groups of peers 8. Must be comfortable talking about diversity and related cultural topics 9. Must be available to facilitate both evening and daytime sessions Compensation: ID Leaders are paid hourly according to the Saint Mary s Student Employee Pay Scale. ID Leaders are responsible for maintaining accurate records of their hours and submitting online timesheets according to the bi- weekly schedule set by Payroll. This position is NOT federal work study required. Applicants should keep this page for their records.
3 Intercultural Development (ID) Leader Recruitment /Selection Timeline March 1st (Fri) ID Leader Applications available at the Delphine Intercultural Center Only complete applications will be considered. April 5th (Mon) April 8th- 19th (Fri) April 29th 1 (Thurs) ID Leader Application Deadline Complete applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM to the IC. Interview is scheduled when application is submitted. ID Leader Interviews Interviews take place Mon- Fri between 9AM- 4:30PM during the weeks of April 8 th and April 15 th, ending on Friday, April 19 th. ID Leader applicants are notified of hiring decisions. Selected students are asked to sign commitment forms by Monday, May 6 th. May 6th (Mon) ID Leader Commitment Forms due by 4:30 PM in the IC. August 23 rd (Fri) - 30 th (Fri) Mandatory Fall Training for ID Leaders ID Leader Application Checklist * Signed application complete * Signed release of unofficial transcript * Submitted personal essays * Two completed recommendation forms in signed, sealed envelopes Only complete applications will be considered. PART FOUR: Instructions for Letter of Recommendation and Self Reflection Evaluation Forms Please provide two completed evaluation forms: one should be a Self Reflection, and the other should be a Recommendation From filled out by Saint Mary s College faculty, staff, and/or administrators. The questions for each rubric are identical and both forms are attached to this packet. Turn in these completed recommendation forms in sealed and signed envelopes with your completed application packet.
