2 Business, Management and Finance General Information Program Description The Certificate IV in New Small Business Management qualification is suitable for those establishing a small business who use well developed skills and a broad knowledge base to solve a range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others, and have responsibility for the output of others. Career Opportunities You should enrol in Certificate IV in New Small Business if you are running, or intending to run your own small business, or wish to gain more knowledge within your current role to: Understand the legislative requirements of a small business operator Prepare financial forecasts and cash flows Analyse and interpret financial reports (Profit & Loss / Balance Sheets) Provide intermediate word processing and spreadsheet skills Analyse and present research information and write complex documents Identify customer needs and develop skills to promote products & services to them Develop a feasibility study for a new business idea Entry requirements While there are no pre-requisites, the course is designed for students that are in business or have a business idea they wish to develop. Outcome BSB42615 Certificate IV in New Small Business Management Pathways from the qualification BSB50215 Diploma of Business or other Certificate IV qualifications are available. Duration This course is completed within 6 months - fulltime in class study Dates and Times There are two intakes during the year (February and July) Information and Suitability sessions prior please check for dates on our webpage. 3 Classes are held at the Campbell Street Campus, 175 Campbell Street, Hobart Classes are run from 9.00 am pm and 1:00 pm 04:00pm Textbooks Business, Management and Finance Textbooks will be required to be purchased. Book lists will be provided at time of enrolment. Assessment Process There are a number of assessment strategies across each unit of study, they consist of Project work Working in teams Written assignments Practical demonstrations of skill Verbal questions and classroom discussions All assessment and additional learning materials will be provided You will have two attempts to complete assessment activities with training and feedback provided by your teacher Assessment summary Assessment will include: Observation/Checklists from workplaces if relevant Completion of activity and assignment tasks Completion of project assessments to demonstrate your competency Assessment feedback Feedback may identify: Corrections required to demonstrate competency Missing and incomplete work Re-assessment requirements (if any) Your final result Recommendations for future action (if relevant). You are provided with 3 attempts at assessment tasks, with feedback provided at each attempt. You will also be able to check your feedback with your teacher or through your on line course. 4 Business, Management and Finance Recognition of Prior Learning At TasTAFE we believe that the things you already know how to do should be formally recognised. At enrolment, all students are entitled to have your current knowledge and skills assessed in order to determine the amount of training that you need. Regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred, you may be eligible to apply for recognition of your skills and experience. When you apply to attend TasTAFE you can ask for recognition of: Schooling Formal/informal learning Life experience Employment / work experience. You may also be able to apply for credit transfer for units/modules that you have completed previously at another training organisation. Go to for more information. It is also possible to apply for credit for TasTAFE subjects if you decide to study at university. Enrolment Costs and Concessions applying in 2018 Fees are paid on a qualification basis rather than for the individual units that comprise qualifications. Students may also be eligible for a concession fee if: Receiving a Centrelink allowance such as Newstart, Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, Pension, Austudy or Abstudy Listed on a current Centrelink Card as a dependent Have a current Heath Care Card Concession fees are not available to students who are on a registered contract of training. Students claiming a concession must provide evidence of eligibility at the time of enrolment. More Information Phone us on or go to Qualification Requirements This qualification consists of 10 units - 4 core units plus 6 elective units: 4 Core units must be completed BSBSMB401 Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business BSBSMB402 Plan small business finances BSBSMB403 Market the small business BSBSMB404 Undertake small business planning 6 Elective units may be selected from the elective units listed below, or any currently endorsed Training Package or accredited course at the same Certificate IV level If not listed below, 1 unit may be selected from either a Certificate III or Diploma qualification. Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) alignment and contribute to a valid, industrysupported vocational outcome. It applies to individuals operating a small business who use analytical skills to interpret legislation and regulations and develop procedures to manage compliance. Identify and implement business legal requirements Comply with legislation, codes and regulatory requirements Negotiate and arrange contracts Identify and treat business risks BSBSMB402 Plan small business finances This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify financial requirements of a business, including profit targets, cash flow projections and strategies to garner financial support. It applies to individuals who operate a small business or work within an existing micro or small businesses and interpret financial data. Identify costs, calculate prices and prepare profit statement Develop a financial plan Acquire finance BSBSMB403 Market the small business This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and improve business performance via a clear marketing strategy integrated into the business plan. It applies to individuals who operate a small business independently or within a larger organisation. Individuals in this role analyse and interpret market data. 6 BSBSMB404 Undertake small business planning Business, Management and Finance This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research and develop an integrated business plan for achieving business goals and objectives. It applies to individuals who operate a small business that operates independently, or as part of a larger organisation. Individuals in this role interpret business information and numerical data competently. Identify elements of the business plan Develop a business plan Develop strategies for minimising risks BSBCUS402 Address customer needs This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage an ongoing relationship with a customer over a period of time. This includes helping customers articulate their needs and managing networks to ensure customer needs are addressed. It applies to individuals who are expected to have detailed product knowledge in order to recommend customised solutions. In this role, individuals would be expected to apply organisational procedures and be aware of, and apply as appropriate, broader factors involving ethics, industry practice and relevant government policies and regulations. Assist customer to articulate needs Satisfy complex customer needs Manage networks to ensure customer needs are addressed BSBCMM401 Make a presentation This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to prepare, deliver and review a presentation to a target audience. This unit applies to individuals who may be expected to make presentations for a range of purposes, such as marketing, training and promotions. They contribute well developed communication skills in presenting a range of concepts and ideas. It applies to individuals with a broad knowledge of the promotion of products and services specific to an organisation. 7 BSBRES401 Analyse & present research information Business, Management and Finance This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather, organise, analyse and present workplace information using available systems. This includes identifying research requirements and sources of information, applying information to a set of facts, evaluating the quality of the information, and preparing and producing reports. It applies to individuals who are required to apply their broad knowledge of the work environment to analysis and research tasks, evaluate information from a variety of sources and apply solutions to a range of unpredictable problems. BSBWRT401 Write complex documents This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan documents, draft text, prepare final text and produce documents of some complexity. It applies to individuals who work in a range of business environments and are skilled in the creation of reports, information and general promotion documents that are more complex than basic correspondence, memos or forms and that require review and analysis of a range of information sources.
