The Wellcome Genome Campus Courses, Conferences and Public Engagement programme delivers training and engagement focussed around genomics, its applications, and implications. Its vision is to inspire a range of audiences both on the Campus and beyond it, and make the world of genomics open and accessible to all. Wholly funded by Wellcome, four teams work as a single, joint initiative to offer a wide range of events and activities, collaborating closely with scientists from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and EMBL-EBI. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is one of the world's leading genome centres. Through its ability to conduct research at scale, it is able to engage in bold and longterm exploratory projects that are designed to influence and empower medical science globally. Institute research findings generated through its own research programmes and through its leadership role in international consortia, are being used to develop new diagnostics and treatments for human disease. Wellcome is a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health. We provide more than 700 million a year to support bright minds in science, the humanities and the social sciences, as well as education, public engagement and the application of research to medicine. 1

Public Engagement team members To inspire, develop and empower a team of c. 8 staff in the delivery of an innovative and exciting programme CCPE Heads and team members To effectively communicate engagement ambitions, identify opportunities for collaboration, and contribute to CCPE-wide projects and initiatives 2

4 Sanger Institute and other Campus researchers To identify engagement opportunities, offer training and support, explore new initiatives and create a culture of engagement Internal stakeholders within the Campus such as the Institute and Campus Communications team and EMBL-EBI external relations team Build and maintain relationships in order to facilitate a coordinated approach to relevant activities External stakeholders such as the Wellcome Trust Build strong and open working relationships, identify opportunities for collaborative working, share best practice Members of the broader public engagement community Develop relationships and strategic partnerships in order to develop new projects, share experiences, and expand the profile of the programme in the engagement community Role purpose and primary objective: To develop and deliver an innovative, creative and nationally recognised programme of engagement, dialogue and discussion around the topic of genetic and genomic research. The programme should encourage debate, challenge and inspire, reach new audiences on both a local and national scale, and be built on strong internal and external strategic partnerships. It should also develop and foster a culture of public engagement within the Wellcome Genome Campus, through strong internal communication. Core accountabilities [in approximate order of importance to role purpose]: 1. To develop Wellcome Genome Campus Public Engagement into a dynamic, thoughtprovoking, and exciting programme. Bringing innovation and creativity to the programme, strategic thinking around key audience and the best ways in which to engage with them, and using community best practice to build a cohesive package which delivers the engagement goals of the CCPE programme. 2. To develop and establish a new public engagement strategy by working with the Director of CCPE to ensure a consistent approach in terms of mission and goals is achieved within both public engagement and the wider CCPE context; and ensuring that strategic goals and objectives are delivered. 3

5 3. Use best practise in public engagement evaluation approaches to regularly monitor, refine and improve the engagement offer. 4. To inspire and lead a diverse team of engagement, education and exhibition professionals; supporting them to develop their own talents and projects while ensuring a cohesive and impactful engagement programme is maintained. 5. To act as a champion for public engagement across the Wellcome Genome Campus; fostering a community of contributors and developing a culture of engagement. 6. To produce a communications strategy for the public engagement programme, leveraging current assets, which will assist in raising its profile both within the Wellcome Genome Campus and externally. 7. To work with the CCPE Director s Office and other colleagues on programme-wide strategic projects, including funding reviews and developing plans for a Campus Training and Engagement Centre, maintaining strong communication throughout. 8. Liaising and networking with a range of internal and external stakeholders to develop new projects and collaborations, share best practice, and raise the national and international profile of the programme. 9. To be responsible for the financial administration of the programme, ensuring that effective financial management supports the delivery of key goals and objectives. Describe the most complex/challenging aspects of the role Establishing the Wellcome Genome Campus Public Engagement Programme as an acknowledged leader in the field of genomics engagement. Successfully raising awareness, and encouraging the exploration of genomics within wider society. Delivering an innovative, impactful and high-profile programme of events while planning for the longer-term goals of expanding the engagement offer on Campus through a Training and Engagement Centre. Providing inspiration and leadership, while encouraging the independence and creativity of team members. 4

7 CAMPUS LIFE The Wellcome Genome Campus is a 100-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall. Nestled in the quiet countryside of these landscaped gardens are two worldclass research facilities: the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The Campus is also home to the Wellcome Genome Campus Courses, Conferences and Public Engagement (CCPE) programme. The CCPE programme delivers training and engagement focussed around genomics, its applications, and implications. Its vision is to inspire a range of audiences both on the Campus and beyond it, and make the world of genomics open and accessible to all. In addition to its peaceful location, the Campus offers excellent staff facilities including a state of the art data centre, gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, a cycle to work scheme, car sharing and free campus buses from various locations around Cambridge. Equally important to campus life is the range of social activities offered by the Sports and Social Club. Whether it is a Burns' Night Supper, the Christmas Ball or a quiz night there are opportunities to meet with people working across the organisation. Learning, development and networking are other important aspects of life on campus. There are a range of scientific seminars with our own and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. 6

8 OUR BENEFITS Workers at the Institute have access to a range of benefits: Defined Contribution Pension Scheme Employees with a contract of more than 3 months will be automatically enrolled in the GRL Defined Contribution Pension Scheme. Further information on the Pension Scheme can be found at: Life Assurance In the event of an employee's death before retirement, but whilst still in service, the Plan provides a lump sum of six times basic pay. Group Income Protection Employees who are employed for 12 months or more are automatically enrolled in the Group Income Protection Scheme. In the event of incapacity that precludes an employee from undertaking work an application can be made to the scheme for support for ongoing salary payment and accrual of pension benefits paid at a percentage of basic pay. Healthcare Employees who have been with the Institute for longer than six months are given the opportunity to join the healthcare scheme. This provides membership to one of the premier private health schemes without any direct cost to the employee; members can also opt to add dependents to the scheme at their own cost. EyeCare Plan Employees have the option to purchase discounted eyecare vouchers for their friends and family. The voucher entitles you to glasses for any purpose for you, your friends and family. Denplan This is an employee dental payment plan. Employees can purchase dental cover at corporate rates directly from Denplan using online registration. This dental payment plan allows employees to spread the cost of routine (check-ups, hygiene visits and x-rays) and restorative (crowns, bridges or fillings) dental care. The dental benefit also allows you to choose which dentist to go to - whether private or NHS. 7

9 Childcare Vouchers Provision of these vouchers forms part of a salary sacrifice arrangement introduced by the government to provide subsidised childcare costs. The scheme enables those with children at an Ofsted registered childcare facility to sacrifice part of their salary in return for which they receive childcare vouchers. This provides savings in terms of tax and national insurance. Carers' Grant The scheme offers staff financial support for additional care costs that arise when attending training, conferences, collaborative research visits, invited talks etc. Nursery Located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus is a workplace nursery for children of campus staff. The workplace nursery, Crocus Early Years Centre, is run by Bright Horizons. The workplace nursery allows employees to join a Salary Sacrifice Scheme. The GRL Workplace Nursery Salary Sacrifice Scheme enables you to save tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) on your nursery fees. This is possible because the deduction of your nursery fees happens prior to the calculation and deduction of tax and NICs. Annual Leave The Institute gives employees an annual leave entitlement of 25 days when they join, this increases on 1st January each year by 1 day to a maximum of 30 days excluding Bank Holidays. Part time staffs have their holiday calculated on a pro rata basis and receive an entitlement for bank holidays. Cycle to Work Scheme The Institute is able to offer a salary sacrifice scheme allowing employees to purchase up to 2 bikes and accessories to the value of 1000 (per employee). This scheme allows employees to benefit from income tax and national insurance relief. This salary sacrifice scheme forms part of the Government's Cycle to Work Initiative. Health, Fitness and Fun The Institute has an Occupational Health Service that offers advice and support to employees on work related health issues. Employees can also self-refer to an 8

10 independent counselling service based in Cambridgeshire; access is funded by the Institute. In addition the Institute has an onsite gym and provides subsidised membership to all Campus workers. The fun element and fitness opportunities are provided by the Sports and Social Club (SSC). Membership of the club is subsidised and all Campus workers can join. The SSC provide a wide range of sporting activities including circuit training, jazzercise, Pilates, a football league and much more. Social events include Burn's Night Suppers, bowling evenings, quiz nights and the Mid-summer Ball. Murray's restaurant and DiNA cafe For staff there are two main places to eat. The DiNA (in the Sulston building) serving a selection of deli-made sandwiches, snacks, cakes and pastries, along with a wide selection of both hot and cold beverages. Murray's restaurant is located in the Cairns Pavilion (opposite the Morgan building) and offers a selection of hot meals, salads and snacks and with the Pebble Cafe just around the corner for a nice cup of tea or coffee. 9
