1 Recruiting Dos and Don ts - Recruiting Pitfalls Do: Take your time to find someone who fits the job requirements rather than fills the need; it will be less costly in the long run Highly consider attracting non-traditional candidates such as women, minorities, students and new college grads Evaluate the effectiveness of the recruiting process Advertise that the dealership is complying with legal requirements (e.g., A.D.A.) Use your dealership s unique culture as a recruiting tool Try a unique program for recruiting Technicians such as a signing bonus or an employee referral bonus Recruit Sales and Service Consultants from the retail industry; these candidates have the customer service skills you are looking for Use a recruiting brochure to introduce candidates to your dealership Don t: Use gender specific language Assume non-traditional candidates such as women, minorities, individuals with little to no automotive experience and recent college graduates won t be interested in applying Forget to tap into your best recruitment strategy: your current talent base 1

2 Finding and Hiring Gut Feeling or Science? How do you normally hire the right candidate for a position in your department? Do you hire based on your gut feeling or do you use performance testing methods? Science Gut Feeling Behavior-based hiring is built on the premise that past performance is the best predictor of future performance that s why it s considered the most effective and safest system. Hiring the right candidates will enhance the dealership s quality of products and services, thereby ensuring that customer satisfaction is achieved. Typically, you can train employees in skills for job tasks (unless it is a highly-skilled position). While skills can be transferred, positive attitudes are much harder to teach. With the competitive nature of the automotive industry, the only way to build loyalty is through a customer-focused staff. Thus, a positive outlook and a focus on the customer are qualities of paramount importance when hiring new staff members. 2

3 The Four Step Recruiting Process Do your homework (investigate your business environment) Decide on your hiring needs Post jobs internally to see if you already have the talent in house Survey the local job market to determine where you should look for candidates Check the local market to determine if your dealership offers competitve pay, benefits and working condidtions Identify factors that set your dealership apart as a great place to work Identify job requirements Confirm the job responsibilities of the position Identify what knowledge, skills and experience will enable an individual to successfully accomplish these job requirments Use the Role Descriptions to develop your own Select the right recruiting tools The types of jobs you're recruiting for The particulars of your dealership The job market in your area Evaluate the process 3

4 Your Local Job Market What do you need to know about your local market in order to attract the best employees? Use the filters to find the perfect fit for your dealership and discover qualified applicants in your area now. This site gives you the opportunity to search for qualified personnel sorted by Zip Code, Radius, Role, and Relocation Preference. Resource DealerCareers.com can be found on vwwebsource, in the Community section. Who are your dealership competitors and where are they located? Who are your aftermarket competitors and where are they located? Where are the retail businesses in your area that employ customer-facing employees? Where is the talent pool? What is the average compensation for your dealership positions? Local high schools, technical schools, community colleges and four year colleges find out which of your local schools have an automotive curriculum or business management curriculum.
