1 JOB DESCRIPTION Post Senior Lecturer, Performance Arts Job Family Academic Grade 7 Role code PA001 Status Full time Contract Type Permanent Reporting to Principal Lecturer, Interim Course Leader Performance Arts, Course Leader BA Drama, Applied Theatre and Education. AIMS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE This role will work primarily on the Performance Arts course and in addition will have responsibilities on the Writing for Performance pathway of the Drama, Applied Theatre and Education BA Degree. The role holder will be responsible for teaching students, working with colleagues to plan delivery, carrying out assessment and maintaining the currency of the subject. The role holder will work collaboratively with the course teams and maintain a focus on the quality of the students experiences throughout their time on the course. While contributing to and where appropriate leading on, assessment and planning a range of units across all three years of study, the role holder will contribute to the School s profile, through the authoring and dissemination of high quality research outcomes and the maintenance of at least a strong national reputation in Performance Arts. 2 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The range of responsibilities and duties of this role will include the following, although priorities may change in line with the development of the role and other duties may be allocated from time to time. Teaching and Learning Support To contribute to the management of the student experience and to contribute to course development processes. To teach, assess and plan a range of units as required. To be engaged with high quality standards of teaching, learning and assessment. A thorough understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as key to high quality student learning. To contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of academic and practice-orientated standards. Along with other team members to engage in and where appropriate lead curriculum development, ensuring the currency of the curriculum with regard to the provision of appropriate learning opportunities for students. To be responsible for contributing to the quality of the course, contributing to writing Quality Assurance processes. Participate in continuing professional development in relation to learning, teaching and assessment (including Peer Observation of Teaching). Expertise Liaison and Networking Planning & Organising To undertake scholarship and research (which may be practice based) in support of teaching, with some element of research-led teaching. Produce high quality written outputs or practice that expresses and develops disciplinary authority or innovatively apply expertise with external industry or academic partners, which will contribute to the measurable impact of the School as a centre of specialist disciplinary excellence. To maintain an established or developing national personal profile with regard to research and/or specialist expertise and consultancy and/or learning & teaching. To engage, induct and manage visiting and professional staff. To oversee the effective event management of curriculum events. To contribute to and, where appropriate, lead course and student meetings as appropriate. To contribute to team meetings. To sit on and, where appropriate, lead School-wide Committees. To contribute to inter-disciplinary and cross-course developments. To participate in external representations of the work of the School (for example at Open Days, in community development, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations). Undertake course or other administrative management roles under the oversight and direction of Principal Lecturers and/or Readers, advising as necessary; Job Description Page 2 of 10
3 To effectively develop and organise the high quality learning and teaching within the units allocated to the role. To ensure that the learning, and teaching activities allocated to the role are in accordance with the validated course specification. To contribute and where appropriate manage the coordination of the timetable. To carry out administration related to course delivery and recruitment, as required. To effectively plan research and develop research profile harmoniously with course delivery and administration. Information Review, Analysis and Scholarship Analyse statistics and data to evaluate against benchmarks and criteria, including KPIs, drawing conclusions and helping to formulate School strategy. Identify the research question within specific contexts and develop new avenues of research. Teamwork & Motivation Act collegially with different groupings of co-workers (including other academics and administrative departments) in achieving agreed outcomes; Participate in and where appropriate, lead the organisation of work flow within teams including the fair allocation and distribution of tasks to ensure timely delivery. This may include the allocation of tasks to cover for sickness absence or approved leave of absence; Take responsibility for project-teams as directed, supervising and making arrangements for deployment of visiting lecturers, professionals, and colleagues as directed; Oversee where relevant the completion of School-wide projects. Service Delivery Understand, evaluate, respond to and manage stakeholder expectations (including those of students, prospective students, industry employers, Governors, partners, funders and external agencies); Pastoral Care and Welfare Team Development Provide high quality tutorial and pastoral support. Respond to student pastoral and welfare issues in line with School guidance for academic staff and brief and inform students of relevant support and care services; Liaise with relevant student support departments in relation to international student matters, disability and learner support. To sensitively engage with processes of a confidential nature (for example disciplinary procedures and wellbeing and fitness to study procedures) in relation to students. Exhibit leadership in engendering teamwork and the motivation of staff and students in relation to the delivery of the curriculum and the objectives of the Learning, Teaching and Student Experience Strategy. 4 Decision Making Process & Outcomes Play a role in faculty leadership and problem-solving processes. Take decisions in relation to the deployment of resources (human, physical and budgetary); Display leadership in decision-making processes, be able to take a reasoned overview of debate, and cast the deciding vote where necessary. Communication Work Environment Contribute to the creation and storage of appropriate online learning resources and briefings on the School s VLE. Contribute to high quality communications about the subject area and course that can be used for a variety of marketing purposes. To take active responsibility for risk prevention in line with the School s Health and Safety policy. These guidelines are provided to assist you in the performance of the contract. 5 Person Specification Competency Type / Desirable Knowledge and Experience (Expertise) A proven profile in Performance Arts (including writing for performance) with professional experience. Honours degree (or professional experience to the equivalent) in Performance Arts or a related arts subject. To have a PhD or be in the process of completion of a PhD in a related area. Evidence form/certificates HE teaching qualification and/or experience of high quality teaching in Performance Arts and/or writing for performance. Ability to combine practical training with interrogation of form and innovative vision of the subject, within the overall context of theatre training, showing an understanding of the cognate skills and interrelations of performance arts and writing in performance. An understanding of and demonstrable commitment to Equal opportunities. Teaching and Learning Support Teach in a variety of settings, such as team teaching, small group tutorials, one-to-one tutorials, large lectures and workshops. Design and develop teaching materials, methods and approaches within validated parameters. 9 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Contract type Full time, Permanent Remuneration Grade 7: 45,807-50,966 pro rata per annum, including London Weighting. Eligible for annual increments, subject to satisfactory performance. The maximum amount of annual increments per Grade is 5. Employees are appointed to the first increment of the advertised pay Grade. Hours of work Location Period of notice Subject to the Working Time Regulations, full-time employees are required to work such hours as are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post with minimum on-duty hours of 35 hours per week. Swiss Cottage. Following the successful completion of a probationary period, a period of notice of 3 months to take effect on 31 December, 30 April or 31 August. The scheme provides a capital sum, payable in the event of your death before your Normal Retirement Date of two times Basic Salary at the date of your death, payable to your beneficiaries, or to your estate. Cover is provided 24 hours a day, and death for any reason. Central has an appraisal scheme in place that aims to provide a focussed, evaluative review of employee performance against agreed objectives. The objectives are drawn from the Corporate Plan and other related documents for the year ahead. The appraisal process is also used as an opportunity for individuals to discuss training and development needs with their line manager.
