3 The work you ll do will have a big impact on peoples lives in terms of their financial wellbeing and you ll take on responsibility from early on. 5 Investment Investment advice is a key component in the range of consulting services that we offer. We help clients meet their objectives through effective management of pension scheme investment risk. Our investment practice is a market leader in the UK and we advise many household names. Some of the areas our trainees may cover include: Working closely with lead investment consultants to help clients agree long-term objectives and targets, and devise plans for meeting those targets Helping clients ascertain the appropriate level of investment risk to be taken in their scheme, to help schemes manage their funding level Project managing the implementation of a change in structure of a client s assets Monitoring clients investment arrangements and reporting on progress Advising clients on the appropriate structure for their investment portfolio, considering the full range of asset classes and the impact of financial markets and the economy Working with defined contribution clients to ascertain the appropriate investment options for scheme members Researching investment managers/approaches/products to ensure we can advise on those that best fit our clients needs I loved the experience and gained an invaluable insight into the profession. 6 Life and Financial Services As part of the Life and Financial services team we provide targeted insurance advice across six areas of focus - product development; risk and capital management; investment and ALM; longevity management; transactions and structuring; Asset Liability Managment and insurance transfers and reporting. In our team you ll be working with our exceptional consultants and technical experts on a wide variety of stimulating work from an early stage. For example you ll be: Working on thought leadership, carrying out research and helping write articles across all six areas of focus Attending client meetings, encouraging you to develop your consultancy skills alongside your technical skills and life insurance knowledge You ll also focus on developing and nurturing client relationships by really getting to understand their business, their needs and offer them first class impartial advice and recommendations. Working with innovative analytical and modelling tools to help clients understand and manage longevity, investment and other types of risk Reviewing the appropriateness of insurance products to ensure they remain appropriate in an ever changing environment Presenting the results of our calculations and modelling in an engaging and compelling way 6

7 Hymans graduate programme has been great in enabling me to develop both the technical and softer skills required in consultancy. There is a great balance between applying the technical actuarial knowledge gained through exams along with opportunities to develop consulting skills through client interaction, presenting and networking. 8 Actuarial and Benefits Our actuarial and benefits practice is the largest part of our business with around 250 staff, and offers actuarial and benefits advice to a wide range of trustee, corporate and public sector pensions clients. In this role, our trainees work within client teams to support all areas of the advice given by our actuarial and benefits consultants. You will build strong client relationships and get involved in a wide range of work, for example: Designing clients benefits and reward packages Improving security and quality of life for retirees Advising on remuneration and wealth creation strategies Providing financial content for the risks associated with pension provision Developing a communication strategy to support clients through change Assisting in the development of modelling systems that help provide client solutions Assisting with client account development Supporting new business proposals I really enjoy the fact that my day is never entirely spent on calculations, or on written consulting work; there is always a variety. 9 Summer Internship Actuarial and Benefits / Investment / Life & Financial Services If you re serious about pursuing a consulting career with us, then our award winning Summer Internship programme could be just the opportunity you need. It runs from July to August, lasting for 8 weeks. You will support a team in one of our participating practice areas with a wide variety of client work. You ll be working as part of a team of consultants at all stages of their careers. In addition, you will be given a project to work on for the duration of your internship which is of real value to our business. As a Summer Intern you are likely to be: Liaising with people in the business to gain an insight into the firm and a career in consultancy Using your analytical skills to analyse complex data Applying mathematical knowledge to solve often complex and challenging problems Learning to use sophisticated modelling to help support the advice we give to our clients Presenting the results of calculations and modelling in an engaging and compelling way Researching, writing and presenting an individual project which will span the duration of the placement As well as getting a detailed insight into consulting work, you ll receive great support for a truly authentic career experience. I had the chance to experience so many different types of work. I also had the chance to work with a very wide range of employees, from the newest grads to some of the senior partners.
