1 Health & Safety Officer Job Description Primary Location: Scientia Academy Principal Purpose of Role: Health & Safety Officer Responsible to: REAch2 Inspiration Ltd Senior Health & Safety Coordinator. Responsible for: Supporting the co-ordination, implementation and monitoring of all health & safety policy and procedures, to ensure the full compliance with all current legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, REAch2 policies and good practice, as they apply to the whole of the Academy Trust. Main Responsibilities a) Support the Estates Team in ensuring all Academies are fully compliant with all current health & safety legislation pertaining to school premises. b) To provide practical guidance, advice and support on all health & safety matters, relevant to the operations of the Academy Trust, to all members of Academy staff as may be necessary from time to time in order to ensure legislative compliance. c) Support the preparation and development of health & safety strategies, policies and procedures for health & safety and good estates management practice; d) Support the practical and operational implementation, monitoring, review and updating of health & safety policies and procedures in order to ensure full and continual compliance with relevant health & safety legislation and regulations. e) Support all Academies with carrying out all necessary testing, servicing and maintenance of buildings and associated installations. 2 f) Carry out risk assessments and implement control measures for risk reduction and make changes to working practices that ensure safety and compliance with legislation; g) Carry out regular site inspections and site audits to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented and to carry out accident investigations on site - keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest recommendations and improvements; h) To deputise for the Senior Health & Safety Coordinator in respect of Construction Projects; specifically within the remit of Principal Designer and Client duties under the CDM Regulations i) To be responsible for liaising with contractors, regulatory authorities and other external agencies as directed by the Senior Health & Safety Coordinator. j) Contribute to the production of management reports, newsletters, bulletins and presentations / training sessions to Academy staff; k) To attend safety and team meetings and represent the Estates Team on any other associated meetings within the remit of the role. l) Attend seminars and training relevant to the post-holders duties; m) The maintenance and upkeep of all health & safety records related to the carrying out of duties described in this job description. n) The undertaking of any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grading, overall function and level of responsibility of the post. 3 Person Specification The post holder will have / be the following: Qualifications: Possess a relevant qualification; minimum of a NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health (or equivalent). Experience: Demonstrable experience of coordinating the implementation of health & safety policy and procedure, preferably, within an educational establishment. Practical working experience of relevant health & safety legislation covering areas such as CoSHH, Construction, CDM, Management of Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Fire Safety, Control of Asbestos etc. Experience of undertake site inspections audits and risk assessments, making considered and sound recommendations for improvements as necessary. Knowledge, Skills and Capabilities: Excellent working knowledge of health & safety legislation, regulations and ACoP s with particular emphasis on schools / the education sector. Good inter-personal skills and ability to communicate effectively with members of the REAch Estates team, Academies, contractors and external regulatory authorities. Be able to communicate effectively using office-based ICT packages and have welldeveloped skills and experience and be willing to undertake further training in this area when required. Be proficient in the use of MS Office software and MS Outlook. Page 3 of 5

4 Have well-developed organisational, planning, and admin skills. Have the ability to effectively monitor progress and follow up on any projects or issues identified by audits or inspections. Have good presentation skills, confidence and ability to use own initiative to solve problems. Have a demonstrable commitment to CPD, developing his / her own skills and to maintaining an up to date working knowledge of new developments and legislation applicable to the Academy Trust. Personal Attributes: Ability to prioritise, work under pressure and meet agreed deadlines. Have a flexible, responsible, sensible and practical approach towards health & safety. Be well organized, efficient and hard working. Be approachable, assertive and confident but be able to maintain a balanced perspective. Be able to work as part of a team and independently without close supervision. Ability to take responsibility and manage work professionally. Ability to work under pressure with enthusiasm, commitment, and a positive approach. A can do attitude and a clear view of the need for adopting a customerfocused attitude to work. Page 4 of 5
