1 City Year UK School Partnership / Programme Officer City Year UK is seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate to the role of School Programme Officer Background City Year UK is a youth social action charity which challenges 18 to 25-year-olds to tackle educational inequality through a year of full-time voluntary service. As mentors, tutors and role models in schools, they support pupils growing up in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the UK. The City Year experience empowers these exceptional and diverse young people to realise their aspirations and grow as leaders, both through their impact on children s lives and through training, coaching and career development opportunities. From Monday to Thursday, City Year UK's volunteers are integral to the school day. They encourage pupils both in and out of the classroom to engage with and enjoy learning, while developing their own skills. On Fridays they meet to share experiences and benefit from additional training, delivered by experts from across the education, business and voluntary sectors. City Year was first established in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988 and operates in 27 cities across America, as well as Johannesburg in South Africa. City Year UK launched in London in 2010 and has since expanded to Birmingham and Greater Manchester. Overview of role The School Programme Officer is based predominantly in a school and is the primary link between school and City Year UK. He or she is the custodian of City Year culture in the school and is responsible for managing the team as well as coordinating, monitoring and the evaluating all the activities that City Year UK provides. The School Programme Officer is the main communication link to all parties involved. The School Programme Officer plays a key role in the management, training and retention of corps members. He or she has pastoral oversight for the team and their relationships with those they come into contact with (children, parents, education professionals, funders and other stakeholders). School Programme Officer s also monitor and evaluate the progress of City Year UK corps members throughout their service year. Line management The School Programme Officer is primarily a school-based post Monday to Thursday and is location/office based on Fridays and during school holidays. He or she reports to an officebased line manager and is responsible for the line management of up to 13 full-time schoolbased volunteers. Primary responsibilities The primary responsibilities detailed below are;

2 1. Account executive for school 2. Leadership, appraisal and development of a City Year UK school team (corps members) Account executive for school A. Leadership and coordination of the City Year UK team of volunteers service year and clearly communicating expectations to all those involved. B. Ensure the fidelity of the City Year model is implemented. C. Build a long term relationship with the school. Understand school s needs and objectives and liaise closely with staff throughout the year. Anticipate and identify opportunities to implement City Year initiatives that meet the objectives of our school partnership agreement. D. Negotiate with school about the details of contract renewal - under instruction and direction from City Year UK s Head of School Relationships. Contribute to and develop the partnership with school. E. Monitor, evaluate and report on the effectiveness of City Year UK s impact in school in a timely and complete manner. Ensure that City Year UK team projects and initiatives are completed to a high standard, on time and on budget (if applicable). Tasks will involve: Meeting and liaising with designated school staff to discuss and identify school s requirements. Able to converse with school middle and senior leaders and respectfully hold your own in the context of using the team well and appropriately in support of school and City Year ideals; Liaising with, and acting as the link between the school and City Year UK by maintaining regular contact with both, ensuring communication flows effectively and records are kept; Arranging and attending meetings; Using City Year s portfolio of initiatives and collaborating with City Year UK colleagues to identify solutions that meet school's brief and effectively communicate the value of such to school leaders and corps members; Negotiating with school about the details and schedule of delivering the campaign and appropriate deployment of the City Year UK team in school and outside of school;; Be the first point of contact for school to escalate any concern regarding the performance or conduct of the team or individual corps members. Resolving matters and knowing when to escalate more serious concerns to senior staff; Reporting and presenting team impact to school staff and providing them with updates on the training that corps members receive from City Year UK; Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of campaigns through the use of quantitative and qualitative means; Ensure that school provide adequate and timely access to pupil data; Working closely with other City Year UK departments to coordinate stakeholder engagement e.g. school visits, volunteering opportunities and reports; Undertaking administrative tasks. Leadership, appraisal and development of a City Year UK school team (corps members) A. Lead by example embodying the City Year culture and values. Engender a sense of mission and purpose and connection to activities carried out by the team. B. Build a highly effective and cohesive team ready to serve. C. Train, support and develop corps members in school service, preparation for their careers and employability beyond City Year, personal development and civic leadership - under instruction and direction from City Year UK s Head of Training and Careers.

3 D. Monitor, evaluate and report on the effectiveness of City Year UK s impact on the development of corps members. Tasks will involve: Assisting with interviewing and assessing potential future corps members - under instruction and direction from City Year UK s Recruitment department; Ensure all team members are aware of the mission of City Year UK, their team, the school, and are enthusiastic about achieving it; Modelling and enforcing City Year s values, culture and standards of high performance; Maintaining high corps member morale and general welfare; Using City Year UK s person-centred coaching style to provide onsite line management for the team. This will involve support with on boarding, induction, training, observation in class and feedback, performance reviews and disciplinary (if applicable); Regular one-to-ones and team meetings with corps members to focus activity on desired impact associated with pupils progress and performance; Coordination of corps member allocation and timetabling inside and outside school; Overseeing adherence to personal development plans, as directed and supported by our Training and Careers team, to help corps members with goal setting and S.M.A.R.T action plans regarding their future careers and personal development; Gathering and monitoring data, both quantitative and qualitative, to measure progress and outcomes of the above; Writing references on behalf of graduating corps members. There may be other tasks and responsibilities determined by City Year UK s Director of Delivery and Chief Executive at their discretion Competency Framework Professional Level 2 Strategic scope: Has defined areas of responsibility, can make some decisions involving the use of initiative, with ready access to manager for advice or guidance on more difficult problems Accountable for delivering assigned tasks Job-related skills/abilities required: Technical/business-related knowledge Intellectual/analytical/creative abilities Interpersonal/communication skills Good understanding of professional area, with knowledge of procedures for a range of tasks Analytical and methodical approach to problem solving Communication skills to exchange varied information with a range of audiences

The work may involve either: - Accounting for significant sums of money where care, accuracy and security are important; or - Being accountable for expenditure from an agreed budget. The responsibility may include contributing to the setting and monitoring of the relevant budget and/or ensuring effective spend of budgeted sums. Knowledge, skills and qualities A passion for education, children and young people; Good experience of working in a school setting; A sound understanding of school leadership priorities and an ability to represent City Year in this context Strong leader; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Resilience, to enable you to deal with problems and constructive criticism; A proactive attitude, with the ability to use initiative; Excellent organisational skills; The ability to work under pressure and assimilate large quantities of information quickly, whilst paying attention to detail; Drive, enthusiastic and energetic; Flexibility; Experience of effective team working skills; Influencing, persuading and negotiation skills; Excellent oral and written communication skills; A willingness to learn. Terms and conditions Contract This post is a permanent position. Newly appointed post-holders will be subject to a six-month probationary period. Hours This is a full-time post. Normal hours during term time are 7.30am to 5.30pm (Monday to Thursday) and 9am to 4pm (Fridays). During school holidays office hours are typically 9am to 5pm (please also refer to appendix 1). The post-holder may at times be required to work evenings, weekends or irregular hours if necessary, and should be prepared to be flexible. No overtime is available. Annual leave is expected to be taken during school holidays only.

5 Holidays 43 days of holiday leave (minimum) per annum to be taken during school holidays only. No annual leave accrues if the annual entitlement is not used up and there is no entitlement to additional days for length of service. There is a short period of compulsory training at the end of the summer holidays where no leave can be taken and there may be occasional other days of training as determined by the Director of Delivery. Location The exact location of the school post-holder will be determined by the distribution of school partnerships and may be subject to change, but preferences can be expressed and will be accommodated as far as is possible. Background checks Appointment is subject to clearance through the Disclosures and Barring Services and receipt of satisfactory references. The work you will be undertaking will involve contact with children and young people which by law is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act You are not entitled to withhold information and must declare all convictions, including spent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings.
