5 About the centre The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) is the University s microscopy, characterisation and analysis core facility. Its goal is to facilitate and provide research excellence through a focus on world-class facilities matched with expertise and a concept-to-publication user pathway to meet the characterisation requirements of researchers and industry through excellence in training, measurement and analysis. The centre comprises ~30 academic, research, technical and administrative staff supporting a diverse range of instrument platforms including electron microscopy and microanalysis, optical and confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, cell sorting, NMR, XRD, mass spectrometry, small animal imaging, AFM, SIMS and micro-ct. The CMCA operates on three main sites and several satellite sites. Key duties and responsibilities Role Statement The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis is a core infrastructure facility at the University of Western Australia. The CMCA nodes are staffed with full-time microscopists and skilled professional officers with considerable experience in the biological, geochemical and materials sciences. The Centre s instrumentation provides high resolution imaging and microanalysis of biological, geological, physical and chemical materials down to the nano-resolution. The centre also provides extensive training in advanced microscopy techniques, method development and sample preparation. The Director will be a member of the senior management team under the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Research), will be responsible for the management of CMCA and associated nodes (AMMRF, National Imaging Facility, Metabolomics Australia), and will coordinate, facilitate and develop the services and activities of these business units. The Director will work under broad direction and will operate with a high overall degree of autonomy. Responsibilities include supervising a team of academic and professional staff providing technical support to students, researchers and community partners. The Director also manages the day to day operation and renewal of the infrastructure and is responsible for maintaining an up to date portfolio of instruments and facilities relevant to the research profile of the University. Reporting to the Deputy (Research), the Director will play a key role in the portfolio s leadership team, promoting co-ordinated strategic research development. The Director will be expected to work in accordance with the University s policies, procedures and values, promoting academic excellence through integrity, inclusiveness, professionalism and community. At the time of appointment, the Deputy (Research) and candidate will discuss a tailored support package, including an agreed workload allocation to enable the key responsibilities of this role to be delivered and the Director to remain effective in their academic role. The term of the appointment will be for a period of between three and five years and is renewable, by mutual agreement. 8 The University of Western Australia uwa.edu.au 9

Key responsibilities Provide forward thinking leadership which motivates, encourages and develops team members in providing high quality, effective and timely services. Have a deep understanding of University research support needs and priorities as they pertain to the range of services provided by the centre and manage the consultative services provided to University research staff and students to external clients Work effectively with the Committee for Research Facilities and its Chair to develop integrated services across the whole range of UWA research Develop a CMCA Management Committee drawn from users and the infrastructure experts in CMCA to optimize the management and operations of the Centre Establish work schedules, priorities and oversee implementation of University policies Contribute as a productive member of the senior management team in the Research portfolio and participate in University-wide management and strategic leadership activities Develop and continually update an Equipment Replacement Strategy and work with the DVCR and faculties to develop external funding bids for new equipment, including development of instrument specifications as required Maintain and actively monitor operational budgets Identify and implement appropriate quality assurance processes which support and enhance UWA s commitment to delivering a quality service to researchers and external clients Communicate and actively promote the services offered by the centre and ensure user charges are benchmarked and appropriate Actively develop and maintain relationships and networks with national and state stakeholders and clients Analyse the business support requirements of stakeholders, particularly concerning NCRIS relationships, and ensure CMCA meets their research support needs as far as possible within the bounds of existing infrastructure and current resources. Maintain a balance between external client users and internal University research support needs Represent the University at the national level as required and relevant to analytical services, microscopy and microanalysis, including but not confined to, Federal Government national infrastructure initiatives and agencies. Prepare an annual Business Plan that is responsive to internal and external demands and regulatory requirements and provide regular reports on progress against agreed objectives Manage succession planning and recruitment for the centre Seek out and implement business development opportunities which have the potential to drive growth in external revenue and enhance the facilities and services provided to researchers by the centre Participate in and actively contribute to planning and the future development of infrastructure and facilities at the State and Federal Level, including multi-institutional initiatives Oversee provision of operational and financial management for the work area and its related entities including effective management and delivery of administrative and technical support services Provide key stakeholder relationship management Ensure industry and market alignment Establish and foster effective engagement with the professions and external accreditation bodies Selection criteria Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of microscopy and microanalysis and experience in the application and/or development of advanced methodologies in microscopy in a related area Experience in management of core facilities and scientific instrumentation. Experience in contributing to the successful operation of a service driven unit and delivering major programs in complex environments with multiple organisations and personalities. Substantial research and research leadership experience with a track record in obtaining external research funding, including category 1 grants, or professional equivalent Leadership and Values The ability to develop staff; establish and communicate clear standards and expectations; delegate effectively and appropriately; make best use of skills; give constructive feedback and respond to feedback from staff; monitor performance; acknowledge and reward good performance; address poor performance; build trust, good morale and teamwork; secure commitment with staff through appropriate involvement and recognition; and to implement equal opportunities principles and practices Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse nature of the University s community and a willingness to work with staff, students and visitors from a wide range of backgrounds Demonstrate an active commitment to continuing self-development in leadership as well as academic pursuits; understand own strengths and weaknesses, styles and needs; undertake training and development appropriate to the role and own aptitudes.
