2 The concept of safety culture relates directly to the values, attitudes and beliefs that are held collectively about safety within an organisation. We know from experience that there is a link between safety culture and better decision making in respect to risk management and wellbeing - this ultimately leads to less injuries and fatalities in the workplace. If the way we think influences our behaviours it is logical that what we learn, both from our own experience, and from the knowledge of others, is critical to ensuring we are better prepared to manage the safety and wellbeing of ourselves and those we influence. That is why EMA Learning provides no nonsense training using experienced Health and Safety practitioners to deliver in class or onsite education for everyone - whether you have just entered the work force or you are the most senior of managers or executives. For up-to-date information and course dates please visit For more detailed information about EMA Learning, NZQA Assessments etc. please see the General Info booklet.

14 KILLING ME SOFTLY - THE HEALTH SIDE OF SAFETY Are you complying with the new legislation requirement to monitor and review all risks associated with hazards related to illness from slow harm? Is the hierarchy of controls to reduce risk clear and understood? What is involved in the return to work process for a worker who has suffered from long term illness or injury, and are you able to put in an optimum plan for a RTW strategy? Do you understand the barriers such as the psychosocial effects which are commonly associated with long term absence? What can you do to facilitate a timely and effective return to work? If any of these questions have meaning or relevance to you, or you are involved in people management, policy direction or OH&S in your workplace as a manager, supervisor or OH&S Representative then this workshop will be of value to you. 26 It is often easy to perceive health and safety solely through the lens of injury prevention and overlook harm which may occur gradually. Exposure to harm from environmental or biological sources may evade even the most watchful eye unless systems are in place. We explore what can be done to reduce the risk of illness and improve the health and productivity of our workforce. Control of factors contributing to illness form a major component under the HSWA legislation and understanding the importance of monitoring and of remaining vigilant in the prevention of illness from work is critical in complying with the law. Protracted absences from work diminish the investment the employer has made in a worker, so what can be done in the event of a protracted illness or injury to facilitate the optimal and successful return to work. We look at these options and more, in planning rehabilitation and return to work strategies. What does illness look like? Defining health: physical and psychological health. Stress in the workplace. Mental health and the sinking lid. The new legislation: knowing what is a notifiable illness. Duty to monitor exposure and health. Monitoring and reviewing of risks associated with hazards. Problematic return to work from illness and the ACC process. Gradual process injuries. Rehabilitation processes for long term injury or illness. The burdens of lifestyle in public health and the effects on the workforce. Strategies for improving health and productivity through wellness programmes. Understand the duties associated with monitoring and managing risk. Comprehend some of the psychological barriers associated with long term absenteeism. Understand the roles of the PCBU, H&S rep and the worker in managing illness. Put in place an effective return to work programme. Actively contribute to the recovery team and the process of returning to work after a long term absence. Prevention strategies for improving worker health and wellness.
