3 WHY PRINCE2 WHEN THERE IS PMBOK? Section 1.1 (ref: PMBOK 4 th Edition) This standard is a guide rather than a methodology. One can use different methodologies and tools to implement the framework. the PMBOK Guide is neither a textbook, nor a step-by-step, or how to type of reference PMI Today, Feb 2006 Section Project Management Office (ref: PMBOK 4 th Edition) Some of the key features of a PMO may include Identifying & developing project management methodology, best practices & standards. Page 5 BUSINESS CASE PMBOK Acknowledges the existence of a business case as input to developing the project charter. Initiation starts after the business case has been accepted. Section In the early stages of the project life cycle, periodic review of the business case by the sponsoring organization also helps to confirm that the project is still required. Prince2 Starts with a project mandate and creates the outline business case as part of the project brief. Business case approved by the Project Board as part of the P.I.D. in Approving the Project. 4 PHASES/STAGES PMBOK : Section 2.1 Project life cycle overview The project life cycle is a collection of generally sequential project phases A life cycle can be documented with a methodology. Section Project Phases Are a collection of logically related project activities usually culminating in the completion of a major deliverable. End of a Phase formally closed with a review of the deliverable. obtaining authorization to close the current phase and initiate the subsequent one. if the project risk is deemed to be too great a phase can be closed with the decision to not initiate any other phases. Page 7 PHASES/STAGES PRINCE2: Section Project life cycle (technical stages) Technical stages can coincide with the management stages of P2 Section 16.6 Project Stages Are partitions of the project with management decision points. Contains specific products to be produced. End of a Stage Managing Stage Boundaries process. Identifies WHAT you need to do and produce. Specifically reviews risks & issues. 5 PMBOK SAYS: VS PRINCE2 DOES: Tolerances (specified range of acceptable results) and control limits (thresholds, which can indicate whether the process is out of control. ref: PMBOK 4 th Edition Section 8.3 Perform Quality Control the permissible deviation above and below a plan s estimate of time & cost without escalating the deviation to the next level of management. Separate tolerance figures should be given for time and cost. There may also be tolerance levels for quality, scope, benefit and risk. 6 PMBOK SAYS: VS PRINCE2 DOES: Acceptance Criteria Those criteria, including performance requirements and essential conditions, which must be met before project deliverables are accepted. ref: PMBOK 4 th Edition Glossary Quality Metrics/Criteria A definition in measurable terms of the characteristics required of the final product(s) for it/them to be acceptable to the customers and staff who will be affected. ref: Managing Successful Projects with Prince2 Acceptance Criteria Product Description Quality Criteria Page 11 PRINCE2 ENHANCES QUALITY Description of the Project Quality Plan. Definition of what to include in: Customer quality expectations Acceptance criteria Definition of info to include in each product description: Quality criteria Quality method Quality skills/responsibilities Inclusion of quality definitions at all plan levels and in the authorization of work packages to a team manager.
