1 Senior Vice President of Development Combined Jewish Philanthropies Boston, MA Send Nominations or Cover Letter and Resume to: Jill Lasman, Senior Vice President or Libby Roberts, Vice President Introduction: Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP) mission is to inspire and mobilize the diverse Boston Jewish community to engage in building communities of learning and action that strengthen Jewish life and the world around us. Its vision is for a vibrant, inclusive Jewish Greater Boston that embraces diversity and builds communities of meaning and purpose for current and future generations. CJP has the vision, experience, and resources to mobilize the community, provide innovative solutions, and positively impact lives. It is harnessing more than a century of experience and in-depth knowledge to get things done. Combined Jewish Philanthropies unites the community and uses its collective strength as a catalyst for change. COMBINED JEWISH PHILANTHROPIES BACKGROUNDER 1
2 The Opportunity: Why CJP and Why Now? The incoming SVP will join one of Boston s most successful and iconic institutions at a unique and pivotal time of transformation. After serving 30 years as President, Barry Shrage announced he will be stepping down in A search is underway for his successor, who, like Mr. Shrage, will possess tremendous passion for CJP s mission and a dynamic vision for its future, and will play a key role in cultivating and stewarding CJP s highest-level donors. To ensure the smoothest possible transition of CJP s current donor relationships and overall fundraising efforts, the goal is for Mr. Shrage and the new SVP to work closely on seamlessly bridging those relationships. CJP is recognized as one of the most efficiently operated, fastest growing, and most successful Jewish federations in the country and was recently ranked as the largest nonprofit in Massachusetts by the Boston Business Journal. Overseeing CJP s Development effort, the incoming SVP will play a critical role in shaping the path to propel the organization forward. CJP s approach to development is dynamic and highly integrated with CJP s programmatic agenda. In recent years CJP s ability to strategically match community need with donor passion has served to drive significant growth in CJP s annual campaign, which now raises over $56M annually. Additionally, CJP s Development team is responsible for fundraising and gift acquisition associated with CJP s robust Donor Advised Fund program (DAF) and CJP s Endowment & Planned Giving efforts. CJP s DAF program, with more than $1.2B in assets, has generated over $150M in inflows and $90M+ in charitable grants in each of the last 4 years, and CJP s Planned Giving and Endowment program continues to gain significant traction. The charge for the new SVP is to go from strength to strength and continue to grow and improve CJP s Development efforts. Building on significant recent growth, the highly successful Development team sees significant untapped potential both internally and externally. The incoming SVP will serve as the key thought partner to both the current and incoming Presidents, members of the senior team, and CJP s volunteer leadership. Together they will forge new thinking on the cultivation and stewardship of donors, new gift acquisition, and overall giving strategies. CJP recently approved its new strategic plan framework, which will be available for viable candidates to view prior to interviewing. The unveiling of CJP s new plan offers the incoming SVP a ground floor opportunity to create the strategic direction to execute the plan for the institution s future. The Development team is comprised of 50+ individuals who are committed to the cause and interested in mentorship and professional development. The ideal candidate brings superior staff and organizational COMBINED JEWISH PHILANTHROPIES BACKGROUNDER 2
3 management skills. There is a keen desire to attract seasoned leaders who have worked inside and/or outside of the Jewish communal fundraising world, who will bring different approaches and perspectives gleaned from other nonprofit sectors, including, but not limited to, higher education and healthcare. The current team is eager to embrace a more intentional, metrics-driven and best-practice orientation to their work. Now is the time for a newly innovative perspective at CJP. The incoming SVP will be given the latitude to approach his/her work with a donor-centered focus on collaborative giving opportunities inspired by the multifaceted mission of the organization. The overall culture at CJP is caring, outcome-oriented, and fast-paced. Creativity, strategic thinking, energy, and initiative are critical competencies for CJP s next SVP. Mission and Vision CJP s mission is to inspire and mobilize the diverse Boston Jewish community to engage in building communities of learning and action that strengthen Jewish life and the world around us. Its vision is for a vibrant, inclusive Jewish Greater Boston that embraces diversity and builds communities of meaning and purpose for current and future generations. CJP realizes this vision by caring for the needs of the most vulnerable; by working more broadly for justice and peace; by embracing Jewish learning and living; and by engaging with Israel. It invests in impactful organizations through strong connections, effective leadership, and sufficient resources to fulfill the bold aspirations of its community. Playing unique roles in the community, CJP brings together volunteers, partners, and resources in common purpose holding itself and others accountable against measurable outcomes. Specifically, CJP: Cultivates broader and deeper Jewish engagement across its community. A strong Jewish future requires focused effort to COMBINED JEWISH PHILANTHROPIES BACKGROUNDER 3
4 broaden and deepen the engagement of diverse segments and future generations in Jewish life. CJP introduces people to the breadth of offerings in the Jewish community and offers accessible pathways to deepen individual engagement. Enhances connections, capacity, and resiliency across its diverse community. In the face of socio-economic, demographic, and political trends that threaten to divide, CJP unites and strengthens its community while fostering civil discourse and pluralism. CJP encourages greater coordination, collaboration, and innovation among its organizations and leadership, and invests in strong and resilient partners. Prioritizes, convenes, and organizes strategic philanthropic ventures against explicit outcomes. CJP s community faces issues that are bigger than any one group or organization can solve alone; CJP convenes leaders, organizations, and resources to tackle these issues. It establishes explicit goals, measures results, and refines its approach to maximize impact. Fosters community innovation to create solutions for tomorrow s needs. Sustaining a Jewish community of meaning and purpose in the long-term demands that CJP assess the effectiveness of its core institutions and programs. CJP facilitates and drives innovation by identifying, funding, and supporting emergent innovative efforts across the Boston Jewish community and bringing successful pilots to scale. Position Overview Senior Vice President of Development Reporting to the President and working with volunteer leadership, the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Development sits on the senior team and is the senior executive responsible for leading the effort to meet short- and long-term Development objectives for CJP.
