4 Overview Most significant BAS event of the year! De facto start of the actuarial recruiting season All grades (yes, even freshmen) highly encouraged to attend o firm representatives do remember faces from a year-to-year basis Best opportunity of the year to meet firm representatives from all actuarial industries The opposite of networking is NOT WORKING -the internet

5 What You ll Get Out of It Learn about actuarial internship and full-time opportunities across the west coast different actuarial industries and lines of business different company cultures, values, work environments Main Idea: Firm representatives are spending resources and time outside of the office to talk about their jobs. Hear what they have to say.

6 Preparing for Career Fair (Do your research!) Know each firm s Line of business Insurance: Health, Life, or P&C Consulting: Health & Benefits, Retirement, P&C, or Non-traditional Current events Mergers & Acquisitions Technological developments Effects from political events and legislative actions Market trends Business model Publicly traded corporation Non-profit Government entity Limited liability partnership

7 Preparing Your Resume Example resume is from Page 18 of the BAS Handbook ( ctuary/handbook/bas%20actu arial%20handbook%204.0.pdf) Spelling and grammatical errors are more noticeable in printed form Should be carried in a dark portfolio Resume paper is a nice touch but by no means necessary Come prepared to speak more about experiences listed

8 Resume Tips Resume books have been delivered to firms We have the following advice, based on what we ve seen (1) Standardize your resume based on the template in our resume book (math.ucla.edu/~actuary/handbook.html) 85%+ of upperclassmen use this template; resumes are taken more seriously if they are.

9 Resume Tips (2) Make sure important information is CLEAR Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds on a resume (TheLadders.com) Figuring out when you graduate shouldn t be a math problem. Include your GPA if it s 3.0+ If you ve passed an exam, make sure it s clearly visible Use your permanent address

10 Resume Tips (3) Sophomores should begin removing high school activities. Juniors should have none. (4) Indent properly on the left. Line up dates along the right margin. (5) No double- or triple-spacing. (6) No excess space at the bottom (> 1½ inches) (7) Do not list work experience with no bullet points below. (8) Change all font to black, unless you plan on printing in color (9) Do not put sitting for an exam without the month and year (10) Do not use ten different fonts on a resume

11 Be prepared to answer questions about your resume. Why? Because it reflects poorly upon yourself if you can t. They re not trick questions. What is it, and how can I use it to fix errors in data? ASA DataFest: Used R to implement statistical models Recruiter: We using R to model claims all the time. What models fit your data best? What functionality in R did you use the most?

15 Business Professional Dress Code (For Men) Dark suit with matching pants Dress shirt and tie Color of shoes/belt should match Long, dark socks (definitely no white socks) Tips: o Dress shirt and tie should complement o Tie should reach middle or top of belt buckle

16 Business Professional Dress Code (For Women) Conservative skirt or pant suit Neutral colors: black, dark gray, navy, brown Pressed, collared button-down shirt Closed-toe heels or dress shoes o Heels no higher than three inches Limit flashy jewelry and strong perfumes o This applies to men as well

17 Speaking with Firm Representatives Step 1: Greeting Hi, how are you doing tonight? Step 2: Quick Introduction I m [ ], and I m a junior majoring in Statistics Step 3: Conversation starter/question I m interested in this company because I was wondering if you can talk about [ ] in your day-to-day work

18 Speaking with Firm Representatives (Continued) Ask questions that demonstrate your knowledge How are telematics currently affecting pricing models for automobile insurance? Ask questions that show sincere interest Is out-of-town travel part of the job? Do s Ask about typical internship or full time experiences Rotational programs, internship projects Ask what you don t know Advice for actuarial students in college Ask recruiters about themselves (people like talking about themselves)

19 Speaking with Firm Representatives (Continued) Leave awkward silences No need to reinforce actuarial stereotypes Ask too many questions or talk too much about yourself (especially if there is a line) You re not being interviewed (yet) Don ts Be too casual with firm representatives Bro! Do you remember me from last year? Lie about yourself through conversation or through your resume Word travels fast in the actuarial community

22 After the Career Fair Follow up with any questions you still have Send friendly personalized s of thanks o Include interesting things you learned or talked about during the meeting Actually apply o Deadlines come up fast! Work on your LinkedIn profile Networking doesn t end with the career fair!
