Skills for America s Future: Nneka Jenkins Program Manager, nneka.jenkins@skillsforamericasfuture.org 3
About Skills for America s Future Employer Partnerships Community colleges, technical education, credentials Economic opportunity for students, workers, and job seekers 4
Department of Labor Solicitation: American Apprenticeship Skills for America's Future is supporting the DOL's outreach to prospective American Apprenticeship Initiative applicants. We are seeing a renewed interest amongst policy makers, practitioners, and workforce funders in making apprenticeships work. We believe engaged employers are pertinent to making apprenticeships work. Traditionally associated with the construction trades, apprenticeships are evolving to include high growth industries such as IT, manufacturing, and healthcare. As an earn and learn model, apprenticeships can improve economic opportunity and add to workplace diversity. 5
Poll Does your organization intend to submit a proposal for the American Apprenticeship Initiative? 6
Today s objectives Highlight specific resources that were utilized and/or created to expand apprenticeship program. Lift up various apprenticeship tools that fit differing contexts. 7
Agenda Brief review of American Apprenticeship resources to date (Nneka Jenkins, Aspen Institute) What s new in apprenticeships? 28 3-2-1 THREE Key things to remember: 1. Work closely with your industry partners and understand their needs and what they want to accomplish 2. Help them navigate your system 3. Work toward student success TWO Tools 1. College curriculum process & Leverage SME s in your partner organization 2. Remember the timelines ONE Word of Wisdom 1. Flexibility 28
Tools and resources guest: Diana Polson, Keystone Research Center On registering your apprenticeship with the Department of Labor logo photo Consultant, 29
Made Right Here: The Maker Professional Training Program Training Maker Professionals training people how to make a living at making Goal is to fuel domestic manufacturing by: Providing local start-ups with the skilled workers and production knowledge to commercialize and grow locally Providing other innovative companies with skilled workers who have a base of knowledge on the digital tool set Training happens at a local makerspace 30
Three key lessons learned in the process of registering our apprenticeship 1. Have an apprenticeship concept that captures people s imagination and attracts champions. 2. Be patient: DOL wants to support new models of apprenticeship but the process takes time. 3. Continually build your own customized community of practice that fits your project model but pulls on other apprenticeship models/experiences. 31
Two tools/resources used along the way 1. Use your DOL technical advisors to learn about other apprenticeship programs. 2. Find a domain expert who knows the framework and process for state or national registration. 32
Word of wisdom If you think your program will benefit from official registration, be resilient on your registration pathway! Find a champion who believes in your program. Find examples of other apprenticeships that are similar to your apprenticeship model. Learn from them. Use your DOL technical advisors for advice and support. 33
Tools and resources guest: Rob Sentz, EMSI On embedding your apprenticeship in labor market information Chief Innovation Officer, 34
Things to know about the data EMSI s LMI tool Combination of structural LMI + real-time data (job posting analytics) Emerging opportunities / historic trends ID single employer or groups Data-informed justification: there are and will be jobs Timeframe: Strategic vs. Tactical Response Job postings tactical Structural strategic Pipeline O*NET compare prior knowledge and experience w/ new opportunities IPEDS understand education pipeline 35
Two tools and one word of wisdom TWO OTHER TOOLS (Let me know if this works) O*NET is a great resource Search for codes and understand KSAs The Office of Apprenticeship or your state s labor market shop and department of labor Words of Wisdom Data has to be your starting point (strategy) Helps you point in the right direction (objectivity) It isn t the end just the start (make better tactical decisions) 36
