RESPECT AME Champion s Meeting Principles of Excellence Raytheon Missile Systems Tucson, AZ April 13-15, 2011 Linda E. Taylor Copyright 2010 Raytheon Company. All rights reserved. Customer Success Is Our Mission is a registered trademark of Raytheon Company.

Raytheon Diversity: Our People Vision Be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier through world-class people and technology. Goals Customer Growth People Productivity Strategy Be a Customer-focused Company based on Relationships with our customers, partners and each other. Values People Integrity Commitment Excellence Our Vision. Our Goal. Our Strategy. Our People

The Problem In 2006, EOS survey reflected an increase in Raytheon s diversity index and a proportional decline of 7% in respect over a three year period. To understand this trend, Bill Swanson, Raytheon CEO, asked the Raytheon Diversity Council (RDC) to help define what respect is to our people. Made two requests to 150 people Name one or two examples of what people, including leaders, do or don t do that make you feel respected at Raytheon Name one or two examples of what people, including leaders, do or don t do that make you feel disrespected at Raytheon Received 1,548 responses! There is obviously a lot of passion around this issue! Respect is a bottom line issue

The Results The responses were affinitized into five areas Acknowledge my presence/know my name (574) Value my opinion/diversity of thought (692) Give me on-going informal feedback; good and bad, open and honest (421) Show that you appreciate and value me (337) Explain business decisions to me (296) Respect Defined: Both something shown to others and held by people. It is the language, behavior or perceived behavior that makes a person feel safe, supported and/or valued. Added to 06 Sample EOS Survey External Research (Gallup Poll Interviews): The same desirable behaviors that lead to T&R also improve employee engagement and retention.

Golf and Listening Listening with Respect 80% of a successful golf shot begins with a proper grip and how you stand over the ball. In other words, success is almost a foregone conclusion before you exert one muscle.» Jack Nicklaus, professional golfer 80% of our success in learning from other people is based upon how well we listen. In other words, success or failure is determined before we do anything.» Marshall Goldsmith, performance coach Listening with Respect is an Aerobic Exercise It s not enough to keep our ears open; We have to demonstrate that we are totally engaged.» Marshall Goldsmith, performance coach Highly active listening is a prerequisite to Mission Assurance

Road to Recovery Manager Lunch and learn dialogues Increased understanding of the importance of communicating and listening Morale and feeling respected were more intertwined than I expected or realized. This really is connected to sharing ideas and innovation. Level of engagement and honesty I can t discount how eager employees were to share and problem solve, we need to do this more often Average of 3 issues identified per meeting safety, process improvements, communication Company wide training focused on behaviors EOS Focus Area: All hands dialogues Respect Councils Respect Moments Caught being Respectful Communications Campaign

Take the Road to Success Be mindful of the five behaviors and use them: Acknowledge my Presence Value my Opinion and diversity of thought Provide on-going feedback Show appreciation Explain Business Decisions to me Ask for feedback about your unconscious microinequities Take steps to include others and learn to hear new ideas Remember Respect develops Trust, Trust leads to risk taking and risk taking leads to innovation and growth
