2 If you accept a job that has deal breakers, it will be a temporary job Hint: If values are absent or out of alignment it will never be an ideal workplace. What does your ideal workplace look like? Great Applicants Action oriented Intelligent Ambitious Autonomous Display Cultural fit leadership Upbeat Confident Successful Honest Detail oriented Modest Hard working Marketable Passionate Forbes.com You can train an employee on your product or service, but you can't train someone to have integrity, resiliency, self-confidence and work ethic. The smaller the business, the more crucial any hire is. Be flexible on background requirements, but continue to be stringent on personality traits. 3

8 Finding a Job Personal contact and word of mouth often bring the best jobs Market yourself at meetings Business cards / handout / CV / references Every contact is important Look professional The Job Search Starts Today Should I treat my clinical rotations as job interviews? Most of your rotation sites hire the pick of the litter from the students coming through. Even if they don t hire you, this is where you can earn a great recommendation. Know your Employer Do your homework Size and category of hospital Catchment area Name of Department Chair and Chief CRNA Most have picture and biography on hospital web site Reputation Unique features of the Hospital Group s application process Contact HR ahead of time 8

9 Know your Future Employer Mission/Vision Core values Strategic plan Type of practice Be Organized Keep a log Employers Dates Names addresses / phone numbers Use Technology Ipad / cell phone / flash drive Create an excel spreadsheet First time Value You only get 1 chance to do it right the first time. 12 Making Phone Contact Have a professional sounding voice mail greeting Arrange a time for the call Answer the phone with positive excitement Thank you for calling, I ve been excited about this opportunity Questions: DO ask about job related issues and how you can help the team DO ask about what the person likes about the job/group DO NOT ask about pay/benefits/vacation Prepare for the Interview Most people take more time preparing to buy a car than to interview for a job. Learn about the organization Google the following: Confident posture/body language Making a good first impression Interview techniques Answering difficult questions The Interview Remember, the goal is to get the right job. Be prompt Be low maintenance Have flexibility with your travel dates Thank those facilitating the visit Don t demand perks that are not offered Do as requested regarding travel receipts Submit promptly DO NOT submit receipts for alcohol 12

13 Be Organized Google directions in advance When you get to the community, do a test drive Have all contact information on hand No loose papers Arrive early so that you can make contact on time. Appearance Counts Men: Coat and Tie Women: Appropriate business suit and shoes. (no fashion heels) Hygiene Brush / comb hair Brush teeth Avoid excessive perfume / cologne Posture Let your posture show your confidence The Interview If during the job interview the company knows that you have met all the technical skills required, the focus will be on your personality. They will take notes on everything you say and do and everything will be measured. 13

14 The Interview The goal is common ground Make them want you as much as you want a job. Be upbeat and attentive to the interests of person doing the interview. Prepare examples of how you support items on the job description/values. Small groups are hiring you as family Playing in the sand box is as important as your knowledge base. Do you have any Questions? This is your chance to show your knowledge and interest Have a written list of questions prepared ahead of time. Having no questions implies a lack of interest. Good questions create a positive impression and show preparation. Don t focus on pay / benefits. Learn about the work environment, management style and job expectations Questions are your chance to interview the job 1. What is the leadership structure of the Department? What is the chain of command? This question implies that you are ambitious. 2. What is your management style? Gives you a feel for your future supervisor. Manager versus leader 3. What is your biggest challenge right now? Shows you are thinking of challenges. Shows creativity. 14

15 Questions: 4. Who assists you in management? What projects have you delegated to others? 5. Why are you here? Gives insight into corporate culture. 6. Why is the position open? 7. How would you describe the working relationship between Surgeons, Anesthesiologists and CRNAs? Questions: 8. How do you identify and reward high achievers? Implies you are a hard worker and expect appropriate compensation. 9. How can I best add value to the group? Implies that you will be an engaged employee. Going to Lunch / Dinner It s NOT about the food Posture / manners / eye contact Relaxed conversation is the key ONE drink only Focus on People not food They know who you are as a CRNA, this is where they learn about who you are as a person. 15

16 Be Unique If they say which one was he/she, you failed the interview. Be positive, enthusiastic and upbeat Have a unique CV Connect on a personal level Make them feel you are part of the family Give them something to remember about you Follow-up within 24 hours A written thank you note shows a touch of class.
