4 From to 3 of Environmental policy Obligation to comply with legal requirements and continual improvements with respect to the type, extent and environmental impact of the activities, products and services. Environmental policy must provide a framework for defining environmental objectives. 4.3 Planning 5.2 Environmental policy Additional: Adequacy of the environmental policy for the purpose and context of the organization, including type, extent and environmental impact of its activities, products and services. Obligation to protect the environment, including the prevention of environmental damage. 6 Planning 6.1 Measures for handling risks and opportunities New: Integration of the assessment of risks and opportunities. Risks and opportunities must be recognized and methods of dealing with them defined. 4/16
5 From to 4 of Environmental aspects Consideration of all aspects of the organization that have an impact on the environment Legal obligations and other requirements Determination and compliance with applicable legal obligations and other requirements Environmental aspects NEW: The environmental assessment must now consider environmental aspects over the entire life cycle of activities, products and services. The effects of the environment on the organization must still be considered (including possible risks, opportunities and emergency situations) Compliance obligations Increased responsibility to conform with the applicable legal framework and self-commitment. Identify compliance obligations, have access to the latter, and determine how they affect the organization. 5/16

Planning of how environmental aspects and compliance obligations can be integrated into environmental management system processes or other business processes and implemented there, bearing in mind technological possibilities as well as financial, operational and business requirements. 6/16

Introduction of a programme for achieving objectives, defining of responsibilities, time frame and required funds. 6.2 Environmental objectives and planning for their achievement NEW, added: Consideration of risks and opportunities Use of performance indicators to monitor progress Definition of how the results are to be evaluated 7/16
8 From to 7 of Implementation and operation Resources, roles, responsibility and authorization Provision of the required resources (personnel, special skills, infrastructure, technical and financial means) by the management. Definition of roles, responsibilities and authorization Appointment of a special representative for the implementation and maintenance of the EMS. 7.1 Resources The organization must define and provide the resources required for the setup, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the EMS. 5 Leadership 5.1 Leadership and commitment Stronger weighting of the leadership responsibility of the top management, by: Assumption of accountability for effectiveness of the environmental management system Ensure that the defined environmental policy and objectives are compatible with the context. 8/16
9 From to 8 of 14 Guidance of persons and support of the management to ensure that they contribute to the effectiveness of the EMS Ensure the integration of the requirements of the EMS in the organization s business processes. 5.3 Roles, responsibilities and authorizations in the organization Allocation of responsibilities and authorizations for relevant roles. This must be ensured by the management. A special representative for the EMS is no longer explicitly required. 9/16
10 From to 9 of Competence, training and awareness Employees who perform activities with an environmental impact must be qualified accordingly. Training requirements must be defined Employees must be aware of the impact on and consequences for the environment due to their activities Communication Introduction, implementation and maintenance of internal communication and for external interested circles. 7.2 Competence 7.3 Awareness The subjects of competence (skills) and awareness are now addressed with their own subheadings and a greater emphasis placed on them. 7.4 Communication Communication has been given a more significant role. The processes required for internal and external communication must by realized by the organization. Attention must be paid to the communication flow, compliance obligations and reliability of the information. 10/16
11 From to 10 of Documentation Documents and records on environmental policy, environmental objectives, the main elements of the EMS and planning, implementation and control of processes Control of documents Procedure for the issue, updating, marking, availability, control and preservation of documents. 7.5 Documented information The terms documents and records have been replaced by documented information. Documented information is required when the organization requires it for the effective flow of its processes. Requirements for documented information are to be found at 16 different places in the standard Preparation and updating Control of documented information The subjects of preparation, updating and control of documented information have been given their own subheadings and a greater emphasis placed on them. 11/16
12 From to 11 of Operational control Definition, planning and securing of procedures for the fulfilment of environmental policy, objectives and individual targets. 8.1 Operational planning and control Increasing importance of operational planning. NEW, added: Use of a risk-based approach Data on outsourced products and processes must be acquired and checked with reference to EMS requirements Emergency preparedness and response Introduction of a procedure for determining the environmental effects of possible accidents and emergency situations. Introduction and monitoring of emergency preparedness and response. 8.2 Emergency preparedness and response No significant changes in content, but there is an additional requirement to provide the relevant information and appropriate training on emergency preparedness and response to the relevant interested parties and persons who perform activities under their control. 12/16
13 From to 12 of Checking Monitoring and measurement Monitoring and measuring workflows with a significant environmental impact. Ensure that only tested or calibrated monitoring and measurement technology is employed. Measurements serve to verify conformity with environmentally related goals Evaluation of compliance Assurance that legal and other requirements are complied with. 9 Performance evaluation 9.1 Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation higher requirements for the evaluation of performance. NEW, added: Definition of criteria and key performance indicators for the evaluation and improvement of environmental performance Clear rules for monitoring and measurement (what, when and how to monitor and measure) Evaluation of compliance The term legal requirements has been replaced by compliance obligations, otherwise no significant changes. 13/16
14 From to 13 of Nonconformity, corrective and preventive measures - Determination and correction of nonconformity - Adoption and evaluation of measures to prevent or avoid recurrence of nonconformity - No stipulation for continual improvement 10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action No significant changes, However, there are no longer preventive measures in the. Risk-based EMS as a preventive instrument has become a core function of the new standard Continual improvement New: Continual improvements to the management system with regard to environmental performance Management of records Evidence of conformance with the requirements. Procedure for the identification, storage, protection, retrieval, withdrawal and destruction of records Control of documented information The terms documents and records have been replaced by documented information and management has been standardized. 14/16
15 From to 14 of Internal audit Audit programme, audit reports, responsibilities etc. 9.2 Internal audit Classification in General and Internal audit programme, otherwise no significant changes. 4.6 Management evaluation Evaluation of the EMS by management at regular intervals. Concrete input and action are prescribed. Records are requested. 9.3 Management evaluation Significantly higher requirements. An additional focus is now placed on: Dealing with risks and opportunities Evaluation of the appropriateness of resources Consideration of the possibilities of integration of the EMS with other business processes Consequences for strategic orientation of the organization Needs and expectations of interested parties, including consideration of compliance obligations. 15/16
