10,000 SUDDEN CARDIAC ARRESTS HAPPEN IN THE WORKPLACE EVERY YEAR. IS YOUR TEAM READY TO RESPOND? While it is rare that an SCA will occur in the workplace, having an automated external defibrillator (AED) program and employees prepared to respond can make the difference if a sudden cardiac arrest occurs. Let s look at some simple steps that will help you maximize your program s effectiveness. 1 MEDIC First Aid & ASHI are Members of the HSI Family of Brands
CHAMPIONING YOUR AED PROGRAM A successful program has an internal champion. This might be: The organization s safety professional An employee volunteer, perhaps one who has had a personal or family experience with SCA and is willing to help promote the program internally Ideas for promoting the program Provide an informational brochure or handout on your AED program: What defibrillators are How they work Where they are located How to sign up for your internal emergency response team Annual review of emergency response plan and AED program Showing public service announcements (PSA) that create awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, compression-only CPR and AED programs Offer open enrollment for CPR, AED, and first aid program
RECORD, TRACK & MAINTAIN Use an asset management tracking system (AED-specific tracking software programs and/or externally managed systems) to record the expiration dates of defibrillator batteries and pads. Have spare pads and batteries on hand. An asset management tracking system can also send you updated summaries on the state of your AED program and notify you of upcoming scheduled maintenance and training. Monitor the device itself. Most AEDs have low-battery or other malfunction warning signals such as loud beeps and lights. Integrate your defibrillator maintenance schedule into your safety program schedule that also tracks your fire alert and suppression systems, PPE, first aid station and other maintained systems. 3 MEDIC First Aid & ASHI are Members of the HSI Family of Brands
MEDICAL DIRECTION & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE To minimize the legal risk to your company, make sure that you are in compliance with all regulatory and legislative requirements for your area: Most AEDs require a prescription from a physician for purchase and deployment in the workplace. Some legal requirements (state and/or municipal) include medical oversight and review of your maintenance and training programs. Some EMS systems require the registration of AEDs
FIRST AID, CPR, & AED TRAINING Most first aid training programs include CPR and AED elements, so be sure your instructor reviews how to use your company s specific AED and how to recognize when the device is in need of service. How to recognize sudden cardiac arrest and how to activate your emergency response plan, including location of the AEDs How to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and if untrained, compression-only CPR How to use your company s AED How to provide on-going care until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrives Although approximately 80% of cardiac arrests occur at home, as a safety and health professional you understand the importance of first aid training in the workplace. 5 MEDIC First Aid & ASHI are Members of the HSI Family of Brands
SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST (SCA) DRILLS As time passes since their first aid training occurred, trained employees often lose confidence in their life-saving skills, but you have some great options to help keep those skills fresh: Many training program providers offer online refresher training that review the skills learned in class. Conduct drills to respond to sudden cardiac arrest, where you integrate the use of AEDs into your emergency response drill itself 1. These exercises help identify weaknesses in the emergency response system that could be overlooked 2. Give employees the opportunity to use their emergency skills outside the classroom. 3. Try to make the drill as realistic as possible to maximize organizational preparedness. Key elements of the drill should include: Pre-drill preparation including notifying key communications personnel such as management and switchboard personnel; preparing emergency response equipment such as manikins and AED training devices Notification of the drill for emergency response team members Pre-exercise briefing Simulated SCA medical exercise including appropriate response checklists Debriefing Additional exercises or CPR and AED practice for emergency response team members
WHY IT MATTERS Quick and appropriate response to cardiac arrest using an AED can significantly improve the chances for survival. In some workplace locations, success rates approach 60% versus 5 7% typically found when employees have to wait for EMS response prior to receiving early defibrillation. 1 While implementing and maintaining an AED program may seem daunting, there are numerous resources available to assist you in developing one for your workplace and your employees. If we can be of any help to you, please contact us at Saving Sudden Cardiac Arrest Victims in the Workplace (Automated External Defibrillators), OSHA N , Health & Satey Institute
