1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of School Team Advisor for Youth (S.T.A.Y) (New position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 42,000 students and 5,000 employees in 96 schools and other sites. Edmonton Catholic Schools requires a School Team Advisor for Youth to support junior high school students by educating, mentoring and empowering adolescents toward making positive choices regarding issues that face them daily. The primary focus of the job is mentorship with most of the work done on a one-to-one basis. The job works independently and partners with school administrators, School Resource Officers, Family School Liaison Social Workers and Behavioural Specialists to deliver the program during the school year. The incumbent will have expertise in law enforcement; as a result, preference will be given to retired police officers. This is a permanent, Out of Scope, Level 5, 0.5 FTE (17.5 hrs. /week), position with a salary range of $28, $35, to commence as soon as possible. The successful applicant s starting salary will be based on the individual s education, qualifications and directly related experience. Qualifications: Degree or diploma in an area related to Law Enforcement, plus five years directly related experience working with at risk youth; Knowledge of the judicial system with police background and/or School Resource Officer experience being an asset; Knowledge of the mental health discipline including cognitive delays; Knowledge of local community resources, education and social services culture and systems; Advanced conflict management and leadership skills; Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a partnership with staff, students and parents/guardians; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. The job supports junior high school students by educating, mentoring and empowering adolescents toward making positive choices regarding issues that face them daily. The primary focus of the job is mentorship -with most of the work done on a one-to-one basis. The job works independently and partners with school administrators, School Resource Officers, Family School Liaison Social Workers and Behavioural Specialists to deliver the program, during the school year. The incumbent will have expertise in law enforcement; as a result, preference will be given to retired police officers. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. For each responsibility, approximately four major activities should be described. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Educate, mentor, empower and advocate for students through one-on-one personal contact. 2. Plan, develop and deliver presentations regarding daily issues such as substance abuse, bullying, role of a bystander, cyber issues, sexual harassment, proactive vs. reactive behavior, crime, personal and community safety, goal setting for success. 3. Partner with the principal of the school to develop action plans for safety and health of all students, be present at the site, and be available as a resource person for strategies to deal with the issues facing adolescents. 4. Educate and mentor staff on the realities that students face each day by raising awareness on these issues, educating about the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and being accessible as a resource person for school staff. 5. Increase parent awareness of the realities their children face each day through personal contact, teaching strategies that help parents monitor their children and providing contacts and resources for their children. 6. Liaise with senior high School Resource Officers to address adolescent issues, collaborate on program delivery, and share information. 7. Prepare and maintain detailed records documenting all contact with the student and staff to compile monthly activity for the District, department and respective school. 8. Participate in staff meetings as required and meet/discuss with teachers and staff to maintain a flow of information relating to students. 9. Provide easily accessible information, education and support to various stakeholders. 10. Participate in long and short-term program planning activities. 11. 3 PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The job identifies significant issues facing students, develops solutions and implements strategies by mentoring and working closely with individual students. The most frequent problems are related to bullying, cyber issues, crisis management and inappropriate behaviours. This work is done independently and is based in the incumbent s area of expertise. School principals rely on the incumbents to provide guidance and direction in dealing with issues related to criminal justice/mental health. The job provides the principal with feedback and expertise support to manage contacts with parents/guardians. The job is often consulted as the last resort before a student faces expulsion. The incumbent provides options and alternatives to manage behavioural or criminal problems. Critical and timely decisions are made by the job to address emergency issues with students. As an example, the incumbent must be able to observe and understand the underlying issues when red flags are raised. The job must be able to assess the problem, gauge the severity and take proactive approaches to resolve situations. Failure to handle this aspect of problem solving could have dire consequences including death or serious injury to the student or others. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. Include examples that indicate the size of the job. Attach a complete Organizational Chart that includes supervisor, peers, direct reports and staff. Although the job has a junior high focus, the incumbent is also a resource to District staff, the Superintendent and Board of Trustees on issues facing at-risk youth. The students typically range in age from 12 to 15 years, but a STAY advisor may also work with students that are younger or older depending on the school site. The work is done in schools. Each job typically provides support to several schools and the incumbents participate on multi-disciplinary educational teams. The job educates and provides guidance to the Superintendent, Board of Trustees, Assistant Superintendents and the general public on emerging and current issues facing adolescents. The job acts as a distinct liaison with Edmonton Police Services, community agencies and resource centres to provide a full range of support for at-risk youth.
