Additional specific information such as the Powerpoint presentations, announcements including assignments, dates of quizzes and examinations, and deadlines will be found in the on the CANVAS website, Course Description: This course covers the fundamentals of personnel or human resources management. The course is for students considering working in the field of human resources and management. Topics include human resources management strategy and practice; labor laws; recruitment,, selection and placement; performance evaluation; training and development; compensation and benefits; safety and health; accident prevention; and labor relations and communication. Course Objectives: Identify and address challenges in managing human resources nationally and internationally. Explain how organizations can gain and sustain a competitive advantage through human resource strategy and management practices, including the creation of high-performance teams and systems. Recognize employees' concerns and know their rights (Federal, State, and Labor laws). Define Equal Employment Opportunity, harassment, diversity. Use talent appropriately as it relates to recruiting, selection, additions to staff, training, development, compensation, job analysis, and retention. Describe compensation and rewards. Explain importance and reasons for benefits, safety, and compensation of injured workers. Review labor relations, practice negotiations, and discuss future of unions.
2 Apply performance management learnings to achieve efficiency, productivity, and growth Student Learning Outcomes: Students identify core concepts and techniques in the areas of compensation and benefits, job evaluation, training and development, and performance appraisal. Marketing Statement : Is marketing an art or a science? Everyone has a different opinion on the subject, but for me, marketing is one thing above all; marketing is fun. I believe it has to be, or it simply won t work. Marketing discipline offers a broad choice of future career options. The course will contribute towards a certificate in Marketing which may help you advance in your career. This certificate prepares students for advancement as well as positions in sales, the retail industry, and entry level marketing jobs. Students will use the computer, the internet, and relevant computer applications. Estimate time to complete: 1 year. Total units needed: 18 GRADE Grading Criteria Maximum Points Earned Case Analysis/ Class participation 50 3 Exams (100 each) 300 Project Proposal 50 Project/ Presentation 150 Final 100 TOTAL 650 Your final course grade will be based on total points earned in the course. The total number of points a student earns is divided by the total number of possible points (675 points). A B C D F B E L O W Quizzes/Tests: Quizzes and Tests will be given on the material that has been covered in class. If you miss a quiz or test it is your responsibility to arrange a makeup time with Ms. Violet Amrikhas within one week or you will receive a zero. Anyone who is unverified or truant on the day of the test will not be given the opportunity to make up the exam and will receive a zero for that test.
3 STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Students needing special consideration due to disability must identify their situation to me in private by the completion of day one. The student then need to contact a counselor at the SSD office, located at Student Services Annex Room 175. Their phone number is (818) The SSD office needs to send the instructor a memo that confirms the exact accommodations required by the student. ADD/DROP/WITHDRAWAL: Please adhere to the timelines prescribed in the schedule of classes for dropping/withdrawing from the class. Severe penalties apply (an F grade) if you don t drop the class on time. Please note that it is your responsibility to drop the class before the drop date listed in the class schedule. Failure to do so may result in an F. I reserve the right to exclude any student who is absent more than 3 times. Roll will be taken at the beginning of class as well as after the break (if applicable). The syllabus may be revised at any time during the term if necessary. Etiquette and Rules of class behavior: During class discussions and lectures, students will not surf the web, check , chat, instant message, or use any network sites (i.e. Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc.). Consistent interruptions during our class time will result in penalties to your grade. Do not use class time to work on other courses or personal business. Cell phones, PDAs, laptops, MP3 players, music devices or any other electronic devices must be turned off and put away before the beginning of class and kept off during class. Log-off from chats or instant message at the beginning of class. Check your in between class meetings for announcements regarding class information or updates to class activities. Attendance will be taken every class and class starts and ends on time. You are expected to read the chapters before coming to class. Appropriate behavior, language and attitude are expected at all times. There will be NO make-up exams without prior approval from me. Academic dishonesty: Cheating on any exam, assignment, project or final will result in an automatic 0. A 0 will NOT be dropped as one of the lowest tests. Evaluation Tools: Midterm and final exams. Several written assignments (e.g. HRM case analysis). Other evaluation techniques (E.g. team or individual exercises and oral presentations) may also be used.

5 Human Resource Management Paper: The major project for the course is a 9 page written paper on one of the HRM topics below. You and your fellow team members must first select a topic. (SEE Below) Human Resource Management: Human resource management is an important part of an organization s success. Today s businesses face a changing world of external and internal pressures that require more flexibility in recruiting, training, and keeping employees than ever. The ability of organizations to adapt to changes depends upon the resources it has available, and human resources are the most valuable organizational resources. The basic aspects of human resource management include staffing, selecting and promoting employees, management development, employee training, conducting performance appraisals and reviews, creating flexible compensation benefit packages and incentives, and monitoring worker relations. This paper will examine the aspects of human resource management and demonstrate the increasing necessity of effective human resource management to the success of a business. You have the opportunity to utilize class learning, work with and learn from each other, and depending on the topic chosen, students will analyze a firm s HRM system, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, and possibly propose changes to improve it. The groups will be determined by the third session of class. I will assist you to identify and define projects as needed. Your team s first written assignment will be to submit a Human Resource Management Topic outline. Your HRM Topic outline should only be about a page in length and must be submitted to me for approval on 9/23/2015. This project will comprise 25% of your overall grade and must cover all essential elements described below. The plan is due the week of 12/9/2015. There are three iterations and are all based on group work: (1) The proposal (2) the 9 page paper and (3) the final power point for the presentation. I will provide guidance and you will have a chance to work with your team members in class several times. Printed paper copies of all assignments are required. Labor/Employee Relations Labor/Employee Relations research papers take a vast amount of time to outline and write. Here is a suggestion on how Paper Masters lays out an assignment like that. Choose one of the following topics, and write a 9-page paper (double space), 12 FONT, Times New Roman, on the Labor/Employee Relations as it relates to the current Human Resources Management challenges today.
6 Note: The 9 pages of Labor/Employee Relations Research Paper should include the Cover page, Preface, introduction, body, and conclusion. Choose only 1 Labor/Employee Relations please: 1. Reasonable Accommodation for Employees in the Workforce 2. Disciplinary Actions 3. Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and Security Concerns 4. Labor/Employee Relations 5. Retentions and Recruitments Please do not write more than 9 pages. Make sure that you appropriately reference others materials used in your paper, using APA style writing. The paper should include at least one reference from a professional journal. The Labor/Employee Relations Research Paper should include the following: 1. Preface : You should have a preface page, which explains the motivation for choosing your Labor/Employee Relations. 2. Introduction : Make sure that your paper includes an introduction of your Labor/Employee Relations, and include a transitory explanation of what your paper will contain. 3. Body Make sure that the body is relevant to your Labor/Employee Relations. Stay focus on the Labor/Employee Relations. Here I want to see today s challenges for HR in regard to this Labor/Employee Relations, as well as appropriate strategies, research, and/or resolutions for these challenges. When you reference someone s work, make sure that you include the author(s) last name(s) and the year of publication, separated by a comma. 4. Conclusion : Summarize your points in the paper, but keep it short. Make sure that the summary includes something you referred to in your introduction and/or body. Make sure that you end the conclusion on a strong note that can be insightful, or even suggested for further study. 5. Reference Page : Make sure that you include a reference page of others works. You may follow the APA reference style. 6. Spelling/Grammar/Writing Content and timeliness : Make sure that you reread your work and/or have someone else to review your work, so that you can avoid misspellings, and grammar. You will also be graded on how well you transition your Labor/Employee Relations into what should be addressed (i.e., an HR challenge).
