4 The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust BACKGROUND INFORMATION Our Vision A Living Landscape rich in wildlife, valued and enjoyed by all. Our Mission To protect and enhance the wildlife and wild places of Leicestershire and Rutland and to engage people with nature. Our work The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is an independent, locally based charity established in 1956 by a small group of naturalists. It has grown considerably in recent years and developed important work for nature conservation and for local people who care about the future of their natural environment: Protecting precious places We care for 35 nature reserves covering 1,234 hectares (3,048 acres), spread across Leicestershire and Rutland. From woodland to meadows, wetland to heaths, our nature reserves comprise some of the most important wildlife and geological sites in the two counties with 19 being Sites of Special Scientific Interest and two designated as National Nature Reserves. As well as containing wonderfully rich and varied animal and plant species, the nature reserves are also important places for people to visit and appreciate outstanding wildlife. Rutland Water Nature Reserve, managed by the Trust on behalf of Anglian Water, is possibly the best known of the Trust s reserves and has become one of the most important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great Britain, regularly holding in excess of 20,000 waterfowl. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and internationally recognised as a globally important wetland site (Ramsar). We also spend a considerable amount of time and resources providing advice to other landowners on land management and nature conservation issues, with a focus on safeguarding and promoting Local Wildlife Sites the best places for wildlife outside legally protected land. The Trust is also developing innovative Living Landscape large area projects. Encouraging people to enjoy nature We offer everyone the chance to experience some of Leicestershire and Rutland s fantastic wildlife. Activities and events are organised throughout the year, everything from badger watches to the annual Birdfair. Inspiring and educating We invest in the future by helping people of all ages to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of nature. Children can take part too our junior club Wildlife Watch is for young people who want to find out more about wildlife, make friends and have fun. Page 4 of 5
5 The Trust s Outreach Education Programme is designed specifically to be delivered in local schools, and the main focus is Forest School with experienced staff helping children develop their confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning entirely outdoors. Research and survey We monitor, study and record the wildlife of our counties to identify special places and important species, to inform land management and promote nature conservation, and to protect local biodiversity. Defending nature We stand up for wildlife, protecting threatened habitats like wildflower meadows and rare species such as ospreys, otters, bats and water voles. The Rutland Osprey Project at Rutland Water achieved notable success in 2001 with the first osprey chick to hatch in central England for 150 years. In 2017 there were 8 nests fledging 15 chicks, bringing a total of 132 chicks fledged from Rutland nests. The Trust at a Glance Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is a membership organisation, governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association. Founded in 1956 the Trust is a registered charity (no ) and a company limited by guarantee (no ). More than 15,500 members currently support the Trust s work. The Trust is managed by a Council of Trustees elected from its members who provide the overall direction for the development of the Trust. On a day-to-day basis the work of the Trust is delivered by a professional team of around 30 staff and more than 600 active volunteers. In addition, our local members groups provide guided walks, lectures and talks, events and social events throughout the year. Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is one of 47 separate Wildlife Trusts that form a powerful conservation network of local charities taking effective action to protect the UK s unique natural heritage.
