2 Career Security Until recently, people got a job and stayed at that job, with that company, until they retired. Today, the average person will change careers 3 to 8 times. When you take control of your career, you can have security.

3 Take Control Know how to manage yourself in a way that positions you for support and help from others. Stop thinking like an employee. Start thinking like a business consultant.

4 Law No. 1 Learn to think outside the box and become a recognized problem solver and go-to person.

5 Law No. 1 Consultant Employee Asks boss for support Tackles day s work Has a set of skills that fits the company s needs Meets job requirements Professional Asks how his or her work can support the boss Prioritizes work to fit company s goals Continuously learning Looks for ways to demonstrate value

6 Law No. 1 Consultant Develop a relationship with your boss. Don t wait to be asked. Own up to your mistakes. Treat your boss with respect. What are your most important goals in the next 6 months and how can I help you meet them? Ask for authority. Seek out training. Identify the lessons learned. Ask for a chance to do better.

7 Law No. 2 Know the difference in results that are good enough, good, and great.

8 Law No. 2 Be Great 1. s need to be good. Always spell-check and proofread. 2. Organize your work area good enough. 3. Your attitude must be great positive, upbeat, helpful, and confident.

9 Law No. 2 Be Great 4. When you have a great attitude, it carries over into your work. 5. It is less about the quality of work and more about the quality of attitude. 6. Your boss will help you identify which of your areas have to be great.

10 Law No. 3 Build strong workplace relationships up and down the chain.

11 Law No. 3 Relationships Much of our success is dependent on others. Develop relationships that are built on trust and mutual respect. Treat others with respect. Learn about the functions of other people s jobs.

12 Law No. 4 Avoid the No. 1 selfsabotaging habit in the workplace: gossip.

13 Law No. 4 Gossip Never say anything you wouldn t say in front of that person or that you wouldn t want repeated. If you have a gripe with someone, go talk to him or her. Treat others with respect.

14 Law No. 4 Gossip Have a civil conversation and ask that person what his or her perspective is on the situation. Show courage and people skills by talking to the person with whom you have the problem. 1. Wipe the slate clean. 2. Assume positive intent.

16 Law No. 4 Gossip Don t let your mental image drive conversation. Focus on the information, not the motives. Stay calm and open-minded. Go into the conversation looking for an ally.

17 Networking In more than 70% of job landings, promotions, and restructurings, there is an element of networking involved in the decision.

18 Law No. 5 Identify the components of emotional intelligence (EQ) and how to apply them.

19 Law No. 5 EQ 1. Empathy 2. Self-awareness Awareness of others feelings; using that awareness to communicate more effectively and build better relationships Requires more focus to be on the other person s needs and getting our ego out of the way Just because you feel like something is personal doesn t make it so. Gives you the ability to understand that you control your feelings You control your thoughts. It shields against ego.

20 Law No. 5 EQ 3. Positivity The ability to find the positive in each situation and every relationship It s about coming into work ready and smiling at everyone you encounter. You control the snapshot moments in your day. 4. Maintaining an upbeat attitude Your job is to be ready to go from the moment you go into work and with a great attitude. Professionalism means you look, act, talk, and behave professionally all the time, period.

21 Law No. 5 EQ 5. Social skills It s all about understanding office politics. Office politics usually refers to the negative effects of people forming cliques and innercircle relationships. The danger comes when cliques develop and begin to perpetuate negative behaviors.

22 Law No. 6 Understand organizational politics whether or not you participate in them.

23 Law No. 6 Politics Don t hang out with 1 group (or person) exclusively. Develop your social life outside of work. Don t get sucked into inappropriate behavior in any group. EQ is about creating the relationships that foster cooperation in your job.

24 Law No. 7 The No. 1 rule for building trust in all of your interactions: being predictable

25 Law No. 7 Predictability Trust is defined as faith or confidence in something or someone. Trust comes from predictability.

26 Law No. 7 Predictability 1. Set and enforce boundaries. People need to know the rules to interact successfully with you. Treating people with respect is a good example of a boundary. Having a good attitude is another boundary. Treat other people s time with respect. Be consistent in applying boundaries.

27 Law No. 7 Predictability 2. Respond under pressure. Make a commitment to learn to be cool, calm, and collected in all situations. People must always know what they can expect when they come to you especially when they have a problem.

28 Law No. 7 Predictability Nothing happens to you it just happens. QTIP: Quit Taking It Personally! When you embrace this notion, you can separate yourself from the situation and focus on empathy. It will allow you to respond rather than react.

29 Law No. 8 Seek out feedback, constructive criticism, and mentors, and use them to shape your future.

30 Law No. 8 Mentors Look in your workplace. Aim high! Use the time you have with them to set goals, create accountability, and share ideas.

31 Law No. 9 Master the art of self-promotion without feeling like you re bragging or being arrogant.

32 Law No. 9 Self-Promotion Make people feel important. Make them feel good about themselves. Create success for others.

33 Law No. 9 Self-Promotion Network, network, network! Work on your relationship with your boss. Be proactive in your performance reviews. Ask if you can have quarterly or monthly goal-setting meetings with your boss.

34 Law No. 10 Use self-assessment to define the career path that works best for you.

39 Law No. 12 Generosity Be generous with your attitude. Be generous in making people feel important and making sure they get a win. Share lots of empathy. Focus on how you can make others more confident. Be generous with your knowledge and your ideas. Have a mentor, and chances are someone will ask you to be a mentor.

40 Final Thoughts Find 1 thing each day you enjoy about your job and put it on a list. Find your mentor within the next week. Plant a smile on your face.
