2 Background Information Our new Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Vicky Vass, is developing an exciting new strategy for the CLBS which reshapes the portfolio and will allow the School to meet the aims of Ambition 2018 and beyond. There is a strategic imperative to change the focus and direction of the School by devising and implementing a new vision, mission, values, principles and a new portfolio. This approach enhances the opportunities for the School to work in collaboration with businesses and students to create an exciting and dynamic offer that engages and supports intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial approaches to business education. Key aspects will involve growing the Business School; it is currently one of the smaller in the sector with a target intake of 620 for 2016/17. This will be achieved by reshaping the current portfolio and the co-creation of new contemporary courses, to be undertaken alongside engendering a culture that sees recruitment, retention and achievement as critical aspects of a positive student experience that contributes to the enhancement of NSS results and league table positions. This new approach steers the Business School to engage with West London Businesses such as Heathrow, Park Royal, the Golden Mile and the Sky creative. West London is home to strong industry sectors including transport, logistics, hospitality, IT, pharmaceuticals as well as creative and financial services. Notwithstanding this there is also an extensive and growing SME community in the area that is ripe for support and development from working with the Business School. The economy of NW London is worth 50bn and is second only to the City of London in terms of GDP. The new strategy also seeks to develop global partnerships and will aim to do this via recruitment of overseas students to the University s London campus. However the larger international growth potential lies in the opportunities afforded by extending the transnational portfolio and partnership reach of the Business School along with its associated market share. The main thrust of the new strategy will be to develop the Portfolio, People and Partnerships whilst ensuring that the student and stakeholder experience is positive and productive. Key Objectives Be listed in the top 70 Business Schools within 5 years Have a contemporary portfolio with the requisite vibrancy to inspire and engender success in all of its activity Be effectively linked and working collaboratively with local business Continuously develop and evolve curricula that addresses the needs of students, employers and start-up, academic partners, and fulfils the requirements of the Teaching Excellence Framework Build reputational value by supporting successful start-up and adding to the social mobility value of students Be the 1st point of call in the university sector for businesses in West London. In order to achieve these priorities it is clear that people, partnerships and portfolio are focal points for the future. This will not only include close working external to the University by the CLBS subject teams in addition to other Academic Schools and support departments in order to achieve crossuniversity activities and plans. Key to all of this will be the appointment of a new Dean who will share the University s ambition for the School and has the skill, experience and appetite to realise it.

3 Role Description Overall Purpose Provide clear strategic and operational leadership for the Claude Littner Business School. Key areas of responsibility Provide strategic direction and ambassadorial academic leadership within the context of University priorities. Lead the formulation and implementation of the School s Academic Plan, setting ambitious objectives and ensuring its fit with the University s academic plans. Enhance academic leadership within and beyond the School, embracing the range of disciplines represented, by providing, in partnership with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor/Pro Vice-Chancellors and the Directors of Central Services, a coherent vision for teaching, learning, research, scholarship, enterprise and employer engagement. Be attuned to the evolving student as a customer environment so as to continually enhance the student experience by ensuring that the design and delivery of course and modules within the remit of the School; the provision of student engagement and feedback processes; and the delivery of student support processes comply with the University requirements in respect of quality, and key performance indicators. Build and maintain external relations essential to the School s and the University s business, promoting the University to external bodies and organisations and enhancing its reputation, profile and influence in UK and international forums. Encourage, support and facilitate scholarly, research and entrepreneurial activity, identifying and pursuing external funding and income-generating activities for the School and the wider University. Collaborate with other Heads of School and Central Services to identify new opportunities for crossand interdisciplinary developments. Attract, manage and retain staff in the School to achieve academic excellence, ensuring their development, appraisal and performance review, and the effective deployment in alignment with the University s policies and procedures. Work with the field and programme leaders to implement comprehensive, accurate and timely timetabling and workload allocation processes, ensuring effectiveness, efficiency, equality and fairness. Work with the assistance of the School s financial accountant to develop, implement and operationally manage an annual School budget in line with the University s Resource Allocation Model, ensuring the highest standards of financial probity. Take responsibility for regular and effective communication within the School and across the University.

4 Work in partnership with the relevant central services to develop and deliver an effective student recruitment and retention strategy. Support an outstanding student learning experience by ensuring effective arrangements are in place for the delivery, quality assurance and enhancement of all programmes, module and fields, and develop where possible new forms of learning that transcend time and place. Ensure an effective and proactive employer engagement strategy is adopted and implemented so that relevant business and employability skills are integrated into the curriculum and that all student benefit from exposure to practical business experience. Work in collaboration with the Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) to identify and deliver achievable research and enterprise income generation targets and ensure that the School is positioned to take advantage of funding initiatives both within the UK and internationally. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive the development of a dynamic and innovative portfolio of taught postgraduate programmes supportive of the University s Strategic Plan. Engage in a programme of personal practice/research and publication. Ensure that all relevant University policies and procedures are communicated and complied with. Actively support the academic and business operations of the University through contribution to and membership of School and University working groups and committee. Take responsibility for a specific pan-university academic leadership task. Represent the University and School and undertake other appropriate tasks commensurate with the position, as required by the Senior Pro-Vice Chancellor. In addition to the above areas of responsibility the position maybe required to undertake any other reasonable duties relating to the broad scope of the position.

5 Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications and/or membership of professional bodies Hold a first degree and/or Masters in a relevant subject Hold a higher academic degree such as a PhD or a professional doctorate in a relevant discipline, or complete within 12 months of appointment Fellowship of HEA Membership of relevant professional bodies. Knowledge and experience Demonstrable senior management and leadership experience gained in the HE sector, including performance management, financial management and resource management Demonstrable experience of developing, implementing and enhancing high quality educational, research or enterprise and employer engagement activities Successful track record of academic leadership and team building Evidence of success in securing external funding and diversifying funding streams Demonstrable experience of building external collaborative partnerships regionally, naturally and internationally. Proven experience of managing staff and their performance Evidence of ability to: Create and secure commitment to a clear vision Build, support and maintain a high performing team Initiate and manage change

8 Outline Terms and Conditions Salary: Negotiable Pension: All academic staff at UWL are automatically enrolled into the Teachers Pension Scheme from the commencement of employment Holiday entitlement: 30 days of paid annual leave, plus discretionary University closure days Relocation assistance: The University has a discretionary relocation scheme that provides financial assistance to staff newly appointed to senior posts who, as a direct result of accepting the appointment, necessarily incur expenses in moving home nearer to their university work base.
