8 Duncan Nicholson Rathbone Training Rathbone Training is a leading youth charity, focused on helping young people gain the right skills to help them move into sustainable employment. Last year, Rathbone supported 8,500 Young People to change their lives through learning, helping them into work, education or training by planning progression from day one. By focusing on the positives, we build self-esteem, confidence and resilience. This enables young people, many who had previously lost hope, to regain their self-worth and re-engage in learning. Many of our young people go on to become peer mentors and peer-educators, further building our capacity to help more young people. The young people that Rathbone Training works with face multiple challenges; poor school achievement, SEND, low expectations and lack of opportunities in our society. We believe in the potential of every young person to achieve a positive future. Rathbone Training provides a unique combination of formal education and training, work experience and youth work together in a flexible and tailored offer. Rathbone Training has been re-accredited the Matrix Standard for Information, Advice and Guidance. Recent Ofsted inspection grade is Good for our apprenticeship provision in England. We hold the Bronze Fair Train National Quality Standard for Work Experience. Our philosophy and our approach to working with young people today is inspired by the vision of our founder, Elfrida Rathbone. Her ground breaking education work early in the 20th Century was underpinned by her belief that everyone, whatever their starting point in life, could make progress through learning. We passionately believe that Elfrida s vision at the start of the 20th Century remains as relevant in the 21st Century. Our fundamental belief is unchanged. Given the right opportunities and support, all young people can learn, can progress, can achieve success in their chosen careers and become young adults who play a positive part in our society. 8
9 Rathbone Training When we think about apprenticeships many will be surprised to learn they aren t just for the young but are available for older workers too. In 2014/15, over 55,700 of those starting an apprenticeship were aged 45 to 59. A further 3,400 were aged over 60 9
10 Rathbone Training We re living longer and our workforce is changing. The number of people aged 50 to State Pension age in Britain is expected to rise by 3.2 million between 2014 and 2024, while the number aged 16 to 49 will have reduced by 200,000. Employers will increasingly need to employ and retain the skills and experience of older workers to remain competitive and avoid skills shortages in the future. 10
