2 ST JOHN S SCHOOL CANDIDATE BRIEF: CATERING ASSISTANT The School Thank you for your interest in St John s. This is an exciting time for our school, as I hope will be reflected in the information contained in this document. We are looking forward to welcoming an outstanding candidate into our community. Rowena Cole, The Head Set in the beautiful Surrey countryside, the School s 50-acre campus is close to Leatherhead town centre and the cultural attractions of nearby London. It has excellent transport links by road, rail and nearby airports Heathrow and Gatwick. The School has a reputation for innovation, academic excellence, strong pastoral care and a first class all-round education for every pupil. It is currently heavily oversubscribed with three candidates for every Year 9 place, and four candidates for every Year 7 place. The School has grown significantly over the course of the last five years and there are currently 763 pupils enrolled. Class sizes are small and the high standards set in the classroom reflect in excellent public examination results. In % of all grades were awarded at A* to B and 43% of grades at A* to A. 40% of all GCSE grades were awarded at A* and nearly 73% were awarded at A* or A. Our support staff are highly skilled and are integral to the successful running of the School, allowing our teachers to focus on teaching. Their efforts are the foundation on which academic achievements stand on. 3 Catering Assistant JOB PROFILE The Catering Assistant provides assistance to the chefs with the preparation, presentation and service of food and is responsible for general cleaning of food preparation areas within the Catering Department. ACCOUNTABILITY You report directly to the Front of House Supervisor. The Catering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the Catering Department; in her absence, responsibility is delegated to the Hospitality Manager or Head Chef. The Head of Operations has overall responsibility for catering staff. MAIN DUTIES Food preparation: Salads, sandwiches, buffet foods, mise en place as determined by the Head Chef Correctly package and label the food items, to include dates of production/ use by date, allergy warnings, and any other information deemed necessary by the Head Chef Check that the dining area is clean and ready for service, ensuring that the correct equipment and menu accompaniments are available prior to service Correctly label food items for service and be aware of the correct procedures with regards to food allergens Ensure that service is quick and efficient so as to keep queuing to a minimum To ensure a high level of cleaning is carried out after each service Preparing and setting up of satellite functions throughout the site, making sure that attention to detail is maintained at all times To ensure that all duties are carried out in an efficient and timely manner To prepare and run the School s tuck shops according to the catering rota FREQUENT DUTIES To ensure all School and statutory regulations pertaining to health and safety, hygiene and fire are adhered to at all times To ensure a standard of personal and general cleanliness and hygiene to comply with School and statutory regulations To ensure that all School and client contacts are handled in a thorough and responsible manner To wear the correct standard of dress or uniform at all times, to include mask, gloves and protective eyewear where necessary To work in a professional manner and maintain a helpful attitude throughout the working day To assist, as directed, with all aspects of food preparation and presentation To serve customers at meal times in an appropriate manner To maintain a high level of cleanliness and tidiness within the kitchen as well as the front and back of house areas at all times as reasonably practicable To ensure that all products are properly packaged, labelled and put in the correct storage areas, fridges or freezers on a rotation basis To follow the School s health and safety procedures at all times To monitor supplies for the servicing units and to control stock To prepare vegetables using appropriate machinery and utensils as directed by the chefs

4 Catering Assistant INFREQUENT DUTIES To assist with special functions from time to time, some of which may occur outside of normal working hours To report any complaints and incidents to a member of the management team, in relation to accident, fire, theft, loss, damage or other irregularities and take action if practicable To attend meetings, courses and training sessions as may be necessary in accordance with your duties and responsibilities NB This list is not exhaustive and you may be required to undertake other duties as required by the Catering Manager. The job description may be amended to meet the needs of the School. EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Previous experience is not essential as training is provided. An awareness of the importance of health and safety in the workplace is considered essential in the environment. The successful applicant should be able to work within a team, whilst working under pressure. Good communication skills and a willingness to be pro-active are essential. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE Basic salary will be in Band 7 on the Support Staff Salary Scale, per hour according to skills and experience, paid monthly pro-rata over the year. There is an annual review on 1 September each year. The salary is inclusive of holiday entitlement and annual leave must be taken in the School holidays. Hours of work will be Monday to Saturday on a flexible shift rota, 44 hours per week, 36 weeks per year (180 days) including alternate Saturdays during term time. Shifts are as follows: 7.00am 3.30pm (early), 11.00am 7.30pm (late), 8.30am 5.00pm (middle), 8.30am 5.00pm (flexi shift dependent on internal events). There is a probationary period of six months and the appointment is subject to satisfactory references and clearance by the Disclosure and Barring Service. The post carries entitlement to membership of the School s Group Personal Pension Plan. Staff are permitted to use the facilities on site (such as the swimming pool, tennis courts and Library) at times which do not conflict with the School s requirements and within the School rules. Lunch is provided during term time.

5 The Selection Process CHILD PROTECTION The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection training and screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. The post-holder s responsibility for promoting and safe-guarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact, will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to the School s Designated Safeguarding Lead.
