It is aimed at establishing the analytical skills needed for the analysis and study of cost behavior, relevance, allocation and design for various courses of action. Throughout the course, there is special emphasis on the use of cost information in managerial decisions and its application to various industrial and service settings. The emphasis is also on human behavior aspects and the ability to reach a range of qualitative and quantitative skills. A major objective of the course is to introduce students to the new cutting edges topics that are relevant to cost management such as Six Sigma, Balanced Scorecard, budgeting and the use of rolling forecasts in decision-making, and international cost management including pricing techniques. Given the various tasks that are carried by managers, the capstone goals is to strengthen the students ability to evaluate available resources and create value added activities. The course builds students analytical skills in recognizing and understanding of the 1) attributes of cost behavior; 2) cost accumulation systems and techniques, especially those related to product costing; 3) management planning and control systems; 4) relevant cost information for short term decision making; and 5) accounting data in long term capital budgeting decisions.

2 Topics included detailed coverage of cost volume project analysis; job order and process costing, including spoilage; budgeting; standard costing and variance analysis; absorption and variable costing; relevant costs; and capital budgeting. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to: Differentiate between various cost behaviors. Manage the constraints on business resources - within the downward economic trends and global competition to add value to the business in excess of its cost. Set the stage for analyzing and managing the future by demonstrating their skills in understanding various cost accumulation processes and their relation to value chain either in job-shop or batch production operations and how to relate cost to design issues. Apply learned cost management tools in making a rational pricing decisions to gain and maintain a competitive advantages for their companies. Examine cost of the product and services and allocate it to its Apply activity-based costing systems, the system suitability for various type of businesses, identify separate activities and calculate cost rate for each, identify opportunity for improvement and meeting targeted cost and capacity utilization and managing quality and time to create value. Comprehend and compare job costing with process costing systems, how to anticipate and resolve potential conflicts between joint products and support services. Identify and chose the best practice of costing systems that fits better its operations and increase business profitability. This objective demands some analytical and creativity skills from students in identifying and analyzing costs in abnormal and normal situations and to make a determination when choosing the most appropriate costing systems. Utilize some basic mathematical techniques to relate cost behavior to volume, profitability, capital investment and decision making in various scenarios. Make appropriate decisions utilizing and analyzing historical cost trends, estimated costs, budgeting, and evaluate performance in special circumstances. It is a measure of student's ability to integrate the learned materials and solve problems that do not have a single answer. METHOD AND CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION: Assessment of students performance is based upon three elements: 1) participation in discussion questions and cases problems, where they are expected to participate in the ongoing discussions of the questions posed by the professor or their peers and other activities; 2) their performances on case analysis and homework problems assignments; and 3) written tests on the assigned reading materials and covered topics in class. The hierarchy of assessment is based on: a) accuracy and completeness in accounting procedures; b) conceptual understanding of the material as demonstrated in written answers to qualitative type questions; c) theoretical understanding of cost related techniques as demonstrated in its use and application when making Cost Accounting Ilir Binaj CPA, CGMA Page 2 of 9

3 business-decision related problems; and d) the ability to analyze and interpret business information. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: Activity Attendance, quizzes, and participation in class Assignment and case assignments Mid-term Exam Final Exam Percentage of Total Course Grade 10%. Merely attendance does not automatically grant you the assigned point, participation is mandatory to earn your points. 30% Professionally and submitted on time as scheduled. 30% There is no Make-up Exam. In particular, acts related to academic dishonesty and plagiarism: work submitted by student should be the result of that student s own honest effort. Students will also be held responsible in case of aiding and contributing in the violation of this policy or knowingly furnish false information, and for all acts of academic dishonesty on computer assignments. ATTENDANCE POLICY Students are expected to attend all classes. Expected absence should be by advance permission from the professor. Emergency situations should be documented by written evidence. However, regardless of the reasons, students are expected to complete the course work in a timely manner.
