1 Recreation Coordinator The City of Whitefish, Montana is seeking a full time Recreation Coordinator for the Parks & Recreation Department. This position requires completion of a Bachelor s degree in recreation or closely related field, and two (2) years of experience in a recreation profession, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Salary Range: $ $25.62 per hour ($19.80 likely starting rate) in addition to an excellent benefits package. 2 CITY OF WHITEFISH An Equal Opportunity Employer POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Recreation Coordinator Range: 16 Department: Parks and Recreation FLSA Status: Non-Exempt GENERAL PURPOSE: Plans, organizes, budgets, schedules, and coordinates community recreation program activities for seniors, adults, and youth, including, but not limited to cultural arts, physical activities, and special interest classes. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director or designated supervisor. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises Recreation Programmer, part-time/temporary recreation staff, special interest instructors, seasonal employees, and volunteers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by the Recreation Coordinator. Coordinates and supervises recreation staff in the development and implementation of community recreation programs. Supervises classes, workshops and activities for persons engaged in recreation programs and cosponsored programs. Selects, plans, implements, and evaluates cultural arts, physical activities, and special interest activities; schedules and runs various tournaments and leagues throughout the year. Surveys community needs and program participants for feedback. Develops new programs in response to community need and budget availability. Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings. Recreation Coordinator - Page 1 of 4

3 Prepares for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, new releases, flyers, and related communications regarding recreation programs. Coordinates with Office Manager regarding logistics and guidelines of programs. Prepares, monitors, and manages fiscal year budget for all recreational programs ensuring fiscal efficiency and responsibility. Writes grant applications and seeks funding for program budget. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community partners, e.g. Whitefish School District, Stumptown Art Studio, and Whitefish Mountain Resort. Negotiates contracts with service venders/providers. Makes presentations on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department; maintains positive public relations. Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel. Maintains a clean and safe working environment for all employees. Assists in development of special events and fundraisers that support recreation budget. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing, running errands, conducting arts/crafts activities, maintenance of recreation facilities. Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public. Performs other duties as assigned. PERIPHERAL DUTIES: Recruits and selects part-time and seasonal staff. Involved in professional organizations, e.g. NRPA and MRPA. Attends professional development training workshops. Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned. Recreation Coordinator - Page 2 of 4

4 DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: (1) Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation or closely related field; AND, (2) Two (2) years recreation experience; OR, (3) An equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (1) Considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration; (2) Considerable knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations, and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation programs; (3) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; (4) First Aid and CPR certified/or able to obtain within first year of employment (5) General knowledge of various social media and marketing (6) Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid State of Montana driver s license or ability to obtain one. First Aid and CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio; automobile; various sports equipment used in recreation programs.
