1 Head of Secondary Teaching Secondary Teaching Role Description Grade & Salary Grade 7 Campus Location: Sighthill, although travel across all campuses will be required Line Manager: Dean of the School of Applied Sciences Line Management responsibility for : Organisational Structure: Role Summary: TBC Tick to confirm attached This new and exciting role will lead the planning, implementation, and launch of a brand new secondary level teacher education (ITE) offer at Edinburgh Napier University, planned to commence in September Our vision is to offer innovative and distinctive new programmes in ITE, specifically focussing on science and other STEM subjects and in other priority areas of English and Computer Studies. Starting with a high-quality offer to an initially small cohort, this role will have the unique opportunity to challenge and change perspectives on secondary teaching techniques, syllabus and student learning and engagement. This new venture aims to grow student numbers over three years to a larger, sustainable and commercially viable model for Edinburgh Napier University. Building great relationships with Schools, Education Authorities and the General Teaching Council, amongst other will ensure the new ITE programmes understand and meet Scotland s science and technology teaching requirements and deliver high-quality programmes.. This role will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to effectively plancreate and lead the project implementation of this exciting venture for the University, ensuring delivery from September 2019 onwards. This role will lead the development of a strong programme that will help to ensure the future needs of secondary education are met.. It will also, through reputation, attract students to study with us by delivering an outstanding quality of secondary education teaching that will ensure Edinburgh Napier University is seen as sector leading in this subject area. Main Duties and Responsibilities To lead the programme of work that will develop a new innovative practice approach to PGDE Secondary programmes and deliver an excellent student experience

2 To manage resources effectively to ensure the success and sustainability of teacher education within the institution, proactively managing risks and issues and ensuring alignment to school growth plans To provide leadership and work with colleagues across the University to utilise existing expertise and develop new programme material as required to meet programme requirements Accountable for programme performance ensuring outcomes meet the agreed KPIs. Provide leadership in promoting the subject externally by developing external links with leading academics, policy makers, service providers, professional bodies, employers and other HEIs to build national and international reputation and profile To build and maintain new and existing relationships with Schools, Education Authorities, General Teaching Council, Government agencies, local businesses and other relevant partnershipsto enable the development and success of the new department To provide knowledge on PGDE subjects that Edinburgh Napier could potentially specialise in, including: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, English, Drama, Dance, Music, Business, Modern Languages Home Economics and Physical Education (see GTCS entry requirements) To lead, advise and negotiate on new developments that give the potential to expand the University programme offer e.g. dual subject qualifications, integrated Masters qualifications To explore opportunities to grow a sustainable distance-learning model building on the strengths of Global Online, enabling potential students in remote & rural areas to study with us To work with University stakeholders to create innovative attraction and recruitment strategies for newly qualified teachers to join us at Edinburgh Napier University To provide academic leadership and programme leadership for the development of the subject within and outside the University Ensure there is effective mentoring and support available to staff supporting the provision Stimulate the development of research and scholarship within the subject To champion our academic brand across the sector and support the growth of our academic reputation at every opportunity Work collabortively across all University departments to ensure appropriate student intakes and growth plans for are achieved Ensure the new ITE programme supports our widening access and inclusion agendas

3 Person Specification Attributes Essential Selection Criteria Desirable Selection Criteria Education/ Qualifications Degree Qualified Experience of the Secondary Education sector PGDE qualification Relevant postgraduate qualification in a related discipline Skills / Experience Experience of Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) at secondary level Experience of a Secondary teaching background in a science or broader STEM subject matter discipline and / or developing secondary education programmes (PGDE or similar) A true passion for teaching excellence Demonstrates strong understanding of secondary education challenges and opportunities Experience in (or engaging with) private/ public sector industry/ government/ business services Relevant teaching background in a science and technology subject area within Scottish or English secondary education Evidence of esteem and influence within peer group Widely networked within areas of secondary education reach Ability to travel regularly across Scotland and the UK as required A passion to seek out, drive and implement innovation or innovative initiatives within the sector Experience of planning student numbers and leading growth development plans Self-driven with strong planning, organizing and problem solving skills and organising Ability to articulate priorities and manage competing demands to deliver change in a complex environment to achieve results Programme/project management experience ideally within education Proven ability to build strong partnership and relationships externally An ability to lead and inspire teams directly and indirectly in a professional and collaborative way Leads by example and displays the Edinburgh Napier University Leadership behaviors and values ambitious, innovative, inclusive Evidence of gaining programme accreditation Demonstrates strong passion, and good knowledge and understanding of the higher education environment Experience of teaching internationally, working with TNE systems or working with international partners to promote education Experience of managing staff resources and performance to ensure high levels of individual and staff performance Experience of recruiting students Understanding of academic quality drivers Meet the academic criteria for Associate Professor or be working towards achieving this
