2 Introduction The American Board of Clinical Psychology (ABCP) is pleased to provide a mentor to those interested in applying for Board Certification in Clinical Psychology and to those who have already achieved Candidate status. Please review the following policies and procedures prior to requesting a mentor so that you fully understand the benefits and limitations of the mentoring process. That mentoring is available does not mean one needs to or should make use of the process. However, mentoring is available to anyone interested in being Certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and may be particularly useful for those with special concerns or questions. This document was created by the Board of Directors of Clinical Psychology (ABCP) to establish the guidelines and boundaries for both parties. The Clinical Board, first and foremost, wishes to thank the mentors who have volunteered to give their time, effort, and expertise to those striving for Board certification. Your support in this effort is much appreciated and valued. The Board also wishes to express its encouragement to those psychologists who wish to attain Board certification in Clinical Psychology. It is our sincere hope that you will find this journey rewarding and professionally profitable in many ways. We encourage you to make use of the mentorship process, as we believe it will serve to inform you about the expectations for the board certification process and will provide guidance as to how to prepare for the examination process. As a starting point, mentors and mentees should thoroughly familiarize themselves with the current Examination Manual for Board Certification in Clinical Psychology (Examination Manual), found on-line at This Examination Manual contains the most current and official policies and regulations concerning the board certification process.

3 The Board Certification Process for ABCP: Brief Overview Mentees will benefit from gaining a thorough understanding of the various stages of the certification process and mentors will benefit from a review of the process. The ABPP board certification process includes the following 3 major steps: 1. Credentials Review The Application form is the primary vehicle for communicating the necessary information upon which eligibility for candidacy is determined. In effect, this phase requires applicants to document that they have the necessary academic, supervised experience, and professional standing to be considered for board certification in clinical psychology. The Executive Officer (EO) and Central Office (CO) staff shall verify the doctoral degree and program and the license to practice psychology. The application will then be vetted by the ABCP-appointed National Credentials Reviewer for specialty-specific requirements. Applicants should reference the Examination Manual for the specific requirements to submit a complete application. Following the Credentials Review, applicants are notified of the results. Applicants meeting generic and specialty requirements become a Candidate and are eligible to move on to the clinical examination process. NOTE: It is inappropriate for a psychologist to advertise (e.g., in a Curriculum Vitae, business card, etc.) one s status as being Board Eligible, a Board Applicant or a Board Candidate. 2. Practice Sample Review: The Candidate becomes eligible to move to the first part of the examination process the Practice Sample Review. Candidates should reference the Examination Manual in effect at the time of their candidacy for the specific requirements of the Practice Sample. Candidates have one year from the time of their candidacy to complete the board certification process. The Candidate will be invited to submit his or her completed Practice Sample to the National Examination Coordinator. The National Examination Coordinator will inspect the Practice Sample for completeness. Incomplete Practice Samples will be returned to the Candidate with a request to revise the materials and resubmit them. A complete Practice Sample will be sent by the National Examination Coordinator to the appropriate Regional Coordinator (i.e. an ABCP Board Director assigned to a geographical region. See Appendix A for a map of the regions and the names of the Regional Coordinators). The Regional Coordinator is responsible for proposing an Examination Committee. The Candidate and Examination Committee members will be queried to insure that no conflict of interest (personal or professional relationship that would preclude an examiner from serving on the Examination Committee) is present. Upon completion of this step, the Regional Coordinator will formally appoint the Examination Committee and forward the Practice Sample materials to the Examination Chair and committee members. The Examination Committee will review the Practice Sample materials, using the criteria in Form F of the Examination Manual. If the Practice Sample Review is successful, the Examination Committee Chair will contact the Candidate and invite the Candidate for the Oral Examination. If the Practice Sample Review results in an unsuccessful outcome, the Candidate will receive a feedback letter written by the Examination Committee and sent from the ABPP Central Office, outlining the domains that were passed and those

4 that were failed with some suggestions for remediation. Note: This letter is not intended to be comprehensive with regards to feedback, but only to provide guidance on issues to address before resubmitting a new Practice Sample. 3. Oral Examination Generally, the time, date, and location of the Oral Examination are determined mutually by the Candidate and the Examination Committee. However, there often are national exams given at ABCP Board meetings, the ABPP Annual Workshops and the APA Convention. Examiners for those exams are often Clinical Board Directors, regardless of region. Please reference the Examination Manual for the content outline and suggested timeframe for the Oral Examination. The examination is meant to be collegial, yet thorough, and it is the responsibility of the Candidate to provide the data necessary for the Examination Committee to score each of the required domains as outlined in Form F of the Examination Manual. Candidates will be notified of the outcome of the Oral Examination by the ABPP Central Office within three weeks of the examination.

5 Mentor Eligibility and Their Functions 1. Mentors are psychologists who are Board Certified in Clinical Psychology and are current with the annual attestation process. 2. Mentors receive no remuneration for their services in this endeavor nor will they accept any form of financial remuneration from mentees. 3. To be eligible to be a mentor, the Clinical Specialist shall have served on at least 3 examination committees and shall have served on at least one examination committee within the past 12 months. 4. Mentors shall certify that they have closely reviewed the edition of the Examination Manual that their mentee is employing in the certification process. The Examination Manual is updated annually in June by the ABCP Board of Directors; however, during their year of candidacy, the Candidate utilizes the edition of the Examination Manual in effect at the time of his or her becoming a Candidate (i.e., the date of the invitation to submit a Practice Sample). Note: Previous editions of an Examination Manual can be obtained by making a request to one s Regional Director. 5. Mentors agree to complete the Mentor Agreement Form (Appendix B) and submit it to the Mentorship Coordinator prior to the time they engage with a Mentee. 6. Mentors will make themselves available in person, by telephone and/or via , according to their preference and the specific situation. The relationship they establish with the mentee shall include and exclude the following: a. A review of the guidelines and limitations of the Mentor-Mentee process to include the following statements: i. Mentors cannot recommend that a Candidate s Practice Sample will be favorably reviewed by an Examination Committee or that a Candidate s Oral Examination will be successful. ii. The Candidate is responsible for his/her work product and the Mentor is not responsible for its content in any way. b. General support and encouragement to complete the application process and Practice Sample in an efficient and timely manner. c. Explanation and expectations of the application process, Practice Sample Review, and the Oral Exam. 7. The following activities are permitted or specifically prohibited as indicated below: Review Activity Permitted Prohibited 1. Answering questions about the board certification process, the Examination Manual, and clarifying instructions about preparing the Practice Sample and/or for the Oral Examination Viewing video recordings and offering feedback about their content 4 Reading the Professional Statement 3. Therefore: a) Correcting typos, spelling and grammatical errors or otherwise editing is prohibited and 4 b) Providing feedback about the overall quality of the Professional Statement and/or statements accompanying the video recordings is prohibited. 4. For Senior Candidates: 4a. Reviewing the portfolio of publications and presentations and advising if it will pass muster with an examination committee. 4b. Answering questions regarding the appropriateness of including any single publication or presentation in the portfolio Mentors who are uncertain about the procedure or the process of board certification are expected to contact the Mentoring Coordinator. Mentors are asked to be certain about the information provided to Candidates and not to assume or guess about the information and/or guidance they provide.

6 Mentee Understanding of the Mentorship Process The ABCP Directors encourage those who wish to work with a Mentor to make their request to the Mentorship Coordinator. A Mentor will provide answers to questions Candidates have as they proceed in the board certification process. While a Candidate is fully responsible for her/his work product (i.e., Practice Sample and Oral Examination), a Mentor can provide support and guidance during the journey. The following information is provided for Candidates so that an understanding of the Mentor-Mentee relationship is most successful: 1. To obtain a Mentor, complete and submit the Mentorship Request Form (Appendix C). Forward the completed form to the ABCP Mentoring Coordinator 2. Mentors are Clinical Specialists (i.e., Board Certified in Clinical Psychology by ABPP) who have served on at least 3 examination committees and have served on at least one examination committee within the past 12 months. They are required to have current knowledge of the examination process and procedures. Should questions arise that a Mentor cannot answer, the Mentor has the resource of the Mentoring Coordinator, who in turn, has the ABCP President for the final word about a concern. 3. Mentors are volunteers and receive no remuneration from ABCP. Likewise, they are prohibited from receiving remuneration from Candidates. 4. An Examination Committee will wish to review a candidate s expertise, not that of a Mentor! The role of a Mentor is to provide support and guidance and to insure that the Practice Sample and preparation for the Oral Examination remains the product of the Candidate. As such, Mentors are prohibited from viewing video recordings and are prohibited from reading Practice Sample materials. 5. Engagement between Mentors and Mentees can be accomplished in person, by telephone, and/or via . You and your Mentor will determine the best means to communicate with one another. 6. The ABCP Board wishes to continuously improve the Mentorship process. We therefore ask that in return for this service, you complete and submit the Mentorship Evaluation Form (Appendix D) when you terminate your mentorship relationship.
