1 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Animal Shelter Volunteer Job #9750 Closes: Open Until Filled This recruitment is to fill volunteer positions in Police Department, Animal Control Division. REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED, and any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the position. Selection Process: Applications and supplements will be reviewed and the most qualified applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. From this list, applicants may be selected to be interviewed by an oral board. All applicants will be notified of their status by mail. Final selection will be made by the appropriate Department Director with final approval of the Human Resources Manager and City Manager. Every effort will be made to process your application in a timely manner. The selection process ensures a very thorough review of all applicants to determine those who meet the minimum requirements for this position. Due to the large number of applications received for most positions and the thoroughness of the screening process, the review and response to applications requires up to four weeks to complete. REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED, and any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the position. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Reports to: Animal Care and Welfare Manager. Supervises: N/A Coordinates with: All Animal Shelter staff as others as appropriate or as directed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Takes calls and dispatches staff to respond to calls from the public concerning stray, nuisance, dangerous, injured, or dead domestic animals. Cleans, inspects animal cages, pens, isolation, and kennel areas. Feeds and water impounded animals. Assists public with selecting animals for adoption. Enters information into computerized database such as owner s name and disposition of animals (adopted, redeemed). Answers the telephone and provides information regarding animal control ordinances and policies to the public and concerned parties. Conducts periodic licensing and rabies clinics. Complies with and promotes safe practices in agreement with the safety rules and procedures set forth in the Loss Control Program. Performs related work as required. BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES Assists as necessary. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures; working knowledge of computer word processing (WordPerfect/Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Excel), and database software programs; business English, spelling, and grammar; and record keeping and filing procedures. Skill in: Operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to: Maintain effective working relationships with applicants, employees, city officials, and the general public; maintain confidential and sensitive information; carry out assigned projects to their completion; enter data or information into a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Personal computer, including word processing and data base software; a variety of standard office equipment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is required to perform in a variety of weather conditions, including extremely hot weather. The volunteer must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects up to 25 or more pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer can be in an office or in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderate to loud when in the field.
