1 Deputy Head of Department Hair, Beauty & Complimentary Therapies JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Deputy Head of Department Job Ref: xxx Area: Hair, Beauty and Complimentary Therapies Location: Variable, mainly Cardiff & Vale with some UK and International travel Salary: c. 39k per annum FTE: 1.00 Reports to: Responsible for: Head of Department Areas denoted below 1. Responsibilities in common with other Deputy Heads of Department: 1.1 To drive and support the aims of Cardiff & Vale College: To ensure the best possible learner experience and outcomes as seen in relevant College KPIs; To enhance the reputation of Cardiff & Vale College at all times, in terms of both day to day internal interactions with all levels of staff and students, and external contacts; To make your Department of Cardiff & Vale College an attractive place to work so that it can recruit and retain the best staff; To promote and champion health, safety, well-being, equality and diversity within the Department 1.2 To assist in the co-ordination and motivation of the relevant teams within the Department, as directed by the Head of Department, and manage the College s resources effectively and efficiently. 1.3 To work creatively to promote and enhance the work of the Department with all relevant stakeholders 1.4 To manage and develop projects within the Department, within agreed timescales and budgetary objectives as directed by the Head of Department

2 1.5 To monitor, manage and report on Departmental performance and quality of provision 1.6 To communicate key messages on teaching and learning via benchmarking and external research across the Department to improve performance 1.7 To become a learner centred college demonstrating creativity and strong leadership in curriculum, quality and the learner journey in order to become an outstanding college 1.8 To work with the Head of Department to be responsible for all aspects of people management including establishing and maintaining high levels of professional conduct 1.9 To ensure effective and timely communication to staff at all levels 1.10 Monitor that learners participate in work related education To carry out the Duty Manager s role during the day and/or evening as part of a rota system to be determined at any of the College s sites Such other duties commensurate with the role which may be required from time to time 2. Person Specification: 2.1 Qualifications: An appropriate vocational or academic qualification such as degree, HNC/D or equivalent A recognised teaching qualification Evidence of continuous professional development 2.2 Essential Skills, Knowledge & Expertise: Excellent knowledge and successful track record of working within this Departmental field Ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of audiences Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting the Education sector within Wales Networking, interpersonal and collaboration skills for effective partnership working Proven ability to work cross-college Excellent, proven people-management skills Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills 2.3. Responsibilities Particular to this post To ensure the delivery of outstanding teaching and learning that is responsive to the needs of our diverse range of learners within the Department To check and monitor accuracy of timetable and timesheets to ensure staff are deployed effectively To effectively manage class cover To increase innovation in teaching, learning and assessment by encouraging pedagogy which encourages and supports teachers to learn more and learners to teach more Combine skills and qualifications with Entrepreneurship and Employability capabilities To work with the Entrepreneurship and Employability Team to foster a culture of entrepreneurship, enrichment and employability Ensure that enrichment is used more effectively as a form of differentiation in all corners of the college Identify learning company opportunities to equip learners with skills to be creative, confident and resilient in the workplace To ensure effective arrangements are in place for learners to participate in work related education To improve in teaching, learning, assessment, attendance, attainment and progression in the best interests of the learner To support Course Tutors to ensure all Quality Assurance documents are completed accurately and in a timely manner To ensure that the Department is in the top quartile for completion and satisfaction of all 3 FIOCs To ensure effective arrangements are in place for external education visits and outdoor education programmes To hold focus group meetings with staff and learners to inform curriculum planning To identify and communicate to the Head of Department clear learning pathways to enable learners to progress Work with the Head of Department to ensure effective target setting, curriculum development, effective blended learning, timely assessment and feedback of learning and attainment are achieved.

4 Work with departmental staff to continually improve success rates and outcomes of all learners Proactively promote and integrate the Welsh language in the curriculum Deliver improvements in standards and performance of our learners, particularly learners literacy and numeracy levels, by maintaining and improving the standards of quality of all our teaching, learning and support services. To undertake staff appraisals to identify training needs and to set performance management targets To ensure that all courses meet the requirements of the awarding body criteria in terms of specification, objectives and schemes of work Work with the Head of Department to strengthen existing partnerships and forge new strong partnerships to support the college in achieving its full potential. To co-ordinate the delivery of Access and PRE Access courses (if applicable) To develop and co-ordinate the delivery of ESOL Vocational courses To monitor that learners participate in work related education. To act up in the absence of Head of Department To lead on Commercial, HE and International Curriculum Development 4 Department Role Objectives Quality: Relentlessly work to improve outcomes for learners in terms of: Recruitment; Attendance; Retention; Success; Innovative Teaching and Learning Progression Efficiency: Deliver efficiency savings to sustain financial viability and support investment. Reduce reliance on Welsh Government Funding and ensure achievement against funding targets. Growth: Deliver growth in key priority areas: learners Work with schools Welsh Medium/Bilingual programmes Higher Education provision Income Generation Work Based Learning STEM

5 4.1 Department role KPI s 100% completion of 3 FIOC Student Satisfaction 100% of planned Student Recruitment 100% of student outcomes must be claimed by the college claim date Hitting as a minimum the college Attendance target Hitting as a minimum the college Retention target Hitting as a minimum the college Success target Hitting as a minimum the Positive Student Progression target These targets will be measured utilising a performance dashboard, linked to the 3 year strategic development plan and will be central to the probationary period review outcome. 5 Department Organisation Structure As confirmed at close of consultation 6 Department Role Conditions: All proposed posts will be new jobs and any successful candidates will need to pass a probationary review period Assuming the probationary review period is completed in a satisfactory manner, the job will then be considered fully substantive and placed inside the normal college annual appraisal cycle; this is normally conducted in October and November of each calendar year. Persons appointed will need to undertake a training programme that supports each post holder
