Job Title: Technology Manager Robotics & Autonomous Systems Grade: Technology Manager Duration of Contract: Permanent Department/Theme: Robotics and Autonomous Systems Location: The Manufacturing Technology Centre Ltd., Ansty Park, Coventry, CV7 9JU. Reporting To: Chief Engineer Intelligent Automation Job Purpose: To coordinate and manage the MTC research program and resources in the area of robotics and autonomous systems (an integral part of the Intelligent Automation research theme), to meet the needs of clients and stakeholders Duties & Responsibilities: Provide line management & technical leadership to all SREs AREs and REs in the research area. Support the development of research team through coaching & mentoring of staff; Technical leadership and management of project and/or work package portfolio > 250K; Lead engagement with existing customers to win new and repeat business through project proposal and business case writing; Lead technical liaison with customer during project delivery; Collaborate with colleagues in MTC Sector and Programme Management groups to successfully deliver research projects; 746 JD Technology Manager Robotics (v5) Page 1 of 6

2 Generation of new project ideas in alignment with the theme's strategy; Candidate Specification: Good knowledge and usually a minimum of 5 years experience in the development and integration of industrial robot systems; Excellent research skills; Excellent report writing and presentation skills; Demonstrable project management skills; Experience in external customer engagement A relevant degree; Masters, PhD or industrial experience is desirable; Chartered or working towards professional qualification is desirable; Key Deliverables: Specific, technical To lead a team undertaking innovative research work focused primarily on the Manufacturing Capability Readiness Levels (MCRLs) 4-6; To ensure the efficient organisation of resources (people, equipment and MTC facilities needed to deliver this research work; To develop proposals for individual research projects to meet clients needs in full; To assist with the identification and acquisition of public funding streams to provide financial gearing for research projects; To ensure that research work is undertaken to meet or exceed the customers quality expectations and to project manage it within the budgets and timescales allocated to each project; To promote MTC capabilities through publications in International Journals and presentations at prestigious conferences, to Professional Bodies and Specialist Interest Groups with due consideration of confidentiality requirements associated with particular areas of research / projects. To manage and supervise Research Engineers, Technicians, KTP Associates and Engineering Doctorate Students; Provide advice and troubleshooting support to all MTC and seconded staff working in the theme; Identify the necessary development of MTC s resources (staff, equipment and building) 746 JD Technology Manager Robotics (v5) Page 2 of 6

3 General, technical: To deputise for the Chief Engineer Intelligent Automation as and when required; In collaboration with other MTC Technology Managers & Sector Teams proactively develop research ideas, technology road maps and market offerings across MTC s full scope of capability; To provide marketing material and support the marketing of MTC s capabilities; Ensure that procedures and quality standards, in particular in the area of health, safety and environment, are clearly communicated and actioned. General, administrative: To work effectively with all colleagues within MTC, the Research Partners, the Industrial Members and the wider client base; To identify and engage in training programmes consistent with the requirements of yourself, your team and those of the MTC; To appraise staff at regular intervals in line with MTC s standard practices To take responsibility for process improvement within your area To carry out specific duties as may be reasonably requested by the Chief Engineer Intelligent Automation 746 JD Technology Manager Robotics (v5) Page 3 of 6

4 Person Specification Essential Desirable Competencies / Behaviours Self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines and work autonomously and as part of a team; Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills giving the ability to provide leadership of a team; Willingness to contribute to the development of new robotic, automation and system integration concepts for advanced manufacturing. Knowledge on intelligent process control for industry applications. Technical Skills and Knowledge Extensive knowledge of industrial automation equipment, particularly robotics and its application to manufacturing environments. Excellent analytical skills including the use of appropriate data handling software, PFMEA s and similar Knowledge of relevant health & safety and environmental issues Knowledge of robot or PLC programming languages 3D & 2D drafting and modelling skills General Skills / Attributes Excellent written and oral communication skills Self-motivated with ability to meet deadlines Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills; evidence of the ability to provide leadership in a team to achieve results Excellent IT skills 746 JD Technology Manager Robotics (v5) Page 4 of 6

5 Understanding of the roles and needs of different client groups Capable of managing complex projects and providing leadership to a project team to ensure on time / on budget delivery Experience Background in Engineering or Science with particular expertise in Robotics and Autonomous Systems for and in collaboration with industry. Significant experience in either an academic research or industrial R&D environment developing automation systems for industrial/manufacturing applications. Background in the setup, improvement or operation of a wide range of manufacturing processes. Experience of securing research funds from external sources (such as Government agencies), or project resources from internal company sources Substantial experience of having produced and reviewed technical reports and/or guidance materials on engineering or science topics. Experience of supervising Undergraduate / MSc / PhD students or managing Engineers / Scientists at equivalent levels in industry Demonstrable commercial skills and acumen including Experience of strategic planning in a high quality academic research or industrial R&D environment Knowledge of funding opportunities for MTC. 746 JD Technology Manager Robotics (v5) Page 5 of 6
