1 Job Description JOB TITLE: RESPONSIBLE TO: LOCATION: GRADE: HOURS: JOB AIM: Learning Support Assistant Learning Services Manager John Ruskin College, Selsdon Park Road, South Croydon, Surrey Points on the salary scale for Support Staff Full time, term time only To provide support to students who may have learning difficulties, language needs and/or disabilities. MAIN DUTIES: 1. To support teaching staff in the training and delivery of the curriculum to students with learning difficulties, language needs and/or disabilities. 2. To assist students with the organisation and completion of their college work e.g. assignments, note-taking, research etc. 3. To provide welfare assistance where necessary and enable access to the full range of college services. 4. To develop and maintain effective relations with learners that promote learning. 5. To liaise with specialist support services. 6. To help teaching staff in the identification and development of appropriate resources for individual learning. 7. To undertake administrative duties as required by the Programme Leader. 8. To promote an inclusive learning environment across the college. 9. To attend team meetings as required. 10. Perform any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Principal. 11. Participate in appraisal and professional development as appropriate. 3 Person Specification, Learning Support Assistant The following qualifications, qualities, skills and experience are considered necessary in this key post: 1. Essential Education and Qualifications A good level of literacy and numeracy Desirable Education and Qualifications A qualification in learner support or ESOL 2. Essential Knowledge and Skills Good organisational skills Excellent interpersonal skills Good IT skills Desirable Knowledge and Skills Experience of working in a supportive role Ability to assist in the production of learning materials 3. Essential Personal Characteristics and Aptitude Ability to communicate with students and staff Tolerance, patience and a calm aptitude Flexibility Reliable team member Ability to act on own initiative Willingness to develop expertise and undertake further training to meet the demands of a developing role. Attitudes - Essential Commitment to the role of post-14 education and training in developing and improving people s lives. 5 General Terms and Conditions for Learning Support Assistant Salary: Start Date: Hours: Probation: 16,951 to 17,538 per annum inclusive of Outer London Allowance. ASAP 37 hours per week, term time only Confirmation of appointment will be subject to satisfactory completion of twelve months probationary period. Notice Period: The period notice for this post is one month Trade Union Membership: Support staff have the right to belong to a trade union of their choice. Pension: Support staff are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme. Group Healthcare Scheme: All college staff may join the college s Healthtrust Scheme which offers competitive and flexible subscriptions deducted directly from salary.
