3 DEFINITION Empowerment is the process of allowing employees to have input and control over their work, and the ability to openly share suggestions and ideas about their work and the organization as a whole 3

4 INTRODUCTION Empowerment encompasses a number of qualities including confidence, autonomy, and access to authority and influence. Empowerment is beneficial for employees and employers alike: It leads to more satisfied and motivated employees and higher levels of productivity and innovation 4

5 EMPOWERMENT Giving decision-making power. Giving access to information and resources. Giving a range of options from which to make choices. Making employees not feeling alone (part of a group). Showing trust 5

6 7 STEPS OF EMPOWERMENT 1. Adopt the traits of a good leader who promotes employee empowerment. Show respect for yourself and for your employees. Listen to what your employees have to say. Show sincerity in your dealings with employees. Be a good example of discipline Avoid taking credit for team accomplishments. Communicate regularly and effectively. Focus on having a positive, winning attitude. 6

9 BENEFITS OF EMPOWERMENT empowered employees are committed, loyal As a result of feeling valued Employees are able to improve productivity and reduce costs Employees who feel confident that their input will be valued, listened to and acted upon will be more likely to share those ideas, benefiting employee and employer Better Customer Service Empowered employees have the power to make decisions without a supervisor 9

10 EMPOWERMENT By focusing on personal empowerment through delegation, leaders can foster outstanding team performance. Empowered leaders continually work to create strong, efficient, highly effective workforces that operate in an environment of trust, respect and acceptance. 10

11 QUESTION Is an empowering leadership style always better when managing teams? 11

12 ANSWER It depends on the nature and timeline of the project. For Example: leaders managing a team on a short timeline should consider a more directive style because teams need to be able to immediately perform at a high level and cannot afford the performance delays from learning associated with empowerment. 12

13 DIRECTIVE VS. EMPOWERED Directive teams perform more quickly; while empowered teams typically experience initial performance delays as they learn about the competencies of others on the team and take steps to collectively make decisions and coordinate their efforts. 13

14 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY There are two kinds of authority leaders possess: positional authority relational authority 14

15 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY Positional authority is the authority that comes from title, rank, and status. It s the authority you get from the hierarchy of an organization. 15

16 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY Relational authority is the authority that comes from the trust and respect of others. It cannot be demanded, but is given freely (or not) by your followers. 16

17 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY It s possible to have positional authority without relational authority. And vice versa! The leadership effectiveness of a person with positional authority without relational authority is limited. 17

18 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY Those who operate with high levels of leadership effectiveness possess both positional authority and relational authority. People follow such leaders anywhere and freely do their best work because they respect both the person they are and the position they hold. 18

19 LEADERSHIP AUTHORITY How to become this kind of a leader: 1/ lead by example. 2/ Honor your word. 3/ Be real. 4/ Give credit to others. 5/ Apologize when you make a mistake. 6/ Never give up. 19

21 THE QUALITY IMPERATIVE The quality imperative means: Do everything smarter, better, faster, and cheaper. Using the full talents of every employee; where everyone contributes to the maximum, to produce goods and services that match customer needs at the lowest cost and fastest delivery time. 21

22 THE QUALITY IMPERATIVE When a leader empowers people, he utilizes their talent, their capacity, their intelligence, their creativity, and their resourcefulness. Consequently, achieve the goals. 22
