This is a regular, full-time position for a Patrol Deputy to patrol roads, highways, and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; to patrol rivers, enforcing water safety laws and regulations; and to enforce State game regulations, and vehicle weight and size regulations. Additional duties may include participation in search and rescue operations, conducting investigations and interrogations, gathering evidence, taking statements of offenders and witnesses, investigating automobile accidents, and preparing concise reports using current internal records management system. Patrol Deputies may work day, swing, and rotating shifts; including holidays and weekends. Sheriff s Office policy dictates a conservative grooming standard and professional appearance at all times, including no visible tattoos while wearing short sleeve uniform shirts and no facial hair. United States citizenship, a high school diploma/ged, and a valid Oregon driver s license are required. Applicants must also be at least 21 years of age and be of good moral character and be able to be certified by DPSST within one year of hire. In addition, all applicants will be required to participate in each phase of the recruitment process if selected to continue to the next phase. To be considered for this position, a completed Yamhill County employment application must be submitted. In addition to the application, applicants must include a one-page letter of interest explaining your reason(s) for applying and describing the qualities you possess which would make you the best candidate for the position. Applicants must be able to pass the following: DPSST Physical Agility Test (ORPAT), computer use and written skills test, interview panel, background check, suitability, and physical upon conditional offer. Testing will be held on June 8, Applicants will be allowed to test by invitation only. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, health savings, paid leaves, holiday, PERS and deferred compensation options. There is a 2% monthly premium salary incentive for deputies fluent in both Spanish and English, as well as incentive pay for education and certifications. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of an officer of higher grade who assigns and reviews work details for conformance to laws, policies, rules and regulations. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of other employees is not typically a responsibility of this position. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITIONS ASSIGNED TO THIS CLASSIFICATION. DEPENDING ON ASSIGNMENT, THE EMPLOYEE MAY PERFORM A COMBINATION OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES: Patrols roads, highways, and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws. Patrols rivers and lakes in patrol boat, enforcing water safety laws and regulations. Enforces vehicle weight and oversize regulations. Enforces state game regulations. Participates in search and rescue operations. Conducts investigations and interrogations; gathers evidence and obtains statements of law offenders and witnesses. Maintains records and prepares reports necessary for efficient investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and office procedures. Makes arrests, books prisoners, transports prisoners and patients under custody to institutions, courts, and on extraditions. Assists in serving civil papers. Informs the public and answers inquiries regarding laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. Appears in court as a witness. Investigates automobile accidents and prepares and files related reports.

SKILL IN: Communicating effectively with individuals during difficult and often stressful situations. Writing accurate reports. Conducting investigations. ABILITY TO: Utilize police equipment and investigative techniques properly. Conduct investigations, collect, evaluate and analyze facts and to draw correct conclusions. Understand and follow oral and written orders. Interact with other officers and members of the general public in a fair and courteous manner. Attend work as scheduled and/or required. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school diploma; one year of law enforcement experience as a uniformed police officer; or two years of college course work related to law enforcement; or any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Ability to secure and maintain a driver s license valid in the state of Oregon, or an acceptable alternative means of transportation. May be required to drive a County vehicle. Employees authorized to operate a private vehicle on County business are required to carry a valid driver s license and liability insurance minimums as outlined in ORS May be subject to successful completion of a background check. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS SUMMARY: The incumbent typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Work also involves travel to individuals homes and meetings. Incumbent will encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to 20 pounds. Contact with the public in home or office environments may risk exposure to irrational/hostile behavior, contagious diseases, or contact with domestic animals. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
